Sonic Mania

Is Sonic Mania difficult or do I just suck at video games ?

I struggled to get through the entire level of Flying Battery Zone

There's no rumble feature at all

ye

Yeh-heh

yeah that level has some annoying parts. the spider boss in particular was infuriating for me

Flying Battery zone act 2 was the most difficult level by far, for me.

Act 1 of Flying Battery isn't bad (admittedly, I played a lot of S&K back in the 90s, and Act 1 is pretty similar all around), but Act 2 has some really annoying spots. Hell, the bottom half of Act 2 near the end is pretty bleh all around due to how easy it is to fall to your death.

I did have several spots where I got game overs in (Flying Battery, Oil Ocean, Titanic Monarch, Lava Reef technically but I was down to 1 life so I don't count that one), but I generally was able to do each stage pretty easily the next time I played.

I'm struggling with the Lava Reef boss

It really fucking feels like the lost Sega Saturn game we never got.

Fuck I love the Saturn\PS era of 2D games but the 3D meme fucked everything.

Imagine a Saturn ever more full of great 2D games.

tfw true ending

is sonic going to meet Blaze in the negaverse?

I don't think Blaze is confirmed for Forces yet.

It's the easiest 2D Sonic
I'm total ass at Sonic but managed to get through with only 2 game overs (both at the Parodius octopus boss)
I've never beaten a 2D Sonic without save states before

Posting again because new thread.

Image is from the health and safety guidelines from the Master System.

Why does Lava Reef say it has 3 acts on the level select? (Selecting act 3 just puts you on act 2)

Chuckles route.

I posted it last thread, I just realized it hit bump limit.
I just got softlocked in the final boss. I had just taken damage when he closed his hands and he captured tails in some kind of crystal but not Sonic. After that the screen was stuck with me just able to walk around and the crystal and the boss stuck on screen and me unable to interact with anything. I took a screenshot but I don't know how to get it off my switch. Has this happened to anyone else?

So user, got all the Blues Sphere levels completed?

I'm struggling with the oil zone act 2 boss. I have actually quit after using 2 continues on it.
I will have to restart and actually collect rings and lives in the level.
Also I can't seem to do the 3rd chaos emerald mini game. Those ufo mini games are retarded.

I'm actually a classic 2d sonic vet, Have completed them all multiple times with all chaos emeralds.
but that was 20+ years ago.
Also blue spheres are much more difficult, which i like.

I just blew 15 lives on the fucking octopus.

Also have no idea how you're supposed to finish Titanic Monarch without running out of time at least once.

What's the level select code for PS4?

IMo 3D was always cool when used to complement 2D games. like Mode 7, or Symphony of the Night's 3D clocktower/save points, stuff like that. Sonic CD had the right idea too, with the 3D special stages. and mania's special stages really are the next step in the evolution of 3D in classic sonic

Maybe its just me, but I found the Act 2 Oil Ocean boss easy, mostly since a good chunk of the fight is similar to the one in Sonic 2. What part is giving you issues, out of curiosity?

The only boss that ate lives for me was the bad ending's finale. Took me 6 finish it. Most of it was trying to work out what to do with the buzzsaw heavy.

You might just have a harder time with 2D games. Idk. Not going to presume or insult but if you're "younger" (like, gasp, in your early 20s!) then you probably grew up with 3D gaming. Entirely different skill set.

Thats what I was mentioning to, Not totally 2D say 16 bit era. Which is cool.

I love that Symphony of the Night\Dragon Force era that sadly was not explored to its fullest because people wanted full 3D.

what does that have to do with mania?

The only 2D sonic I had played before today was Sonic & Knuckles way back in the day. This is just a frustrating now as it was then and I love it.

I have like 7-8 of them done. I used to be really good with the blue spheres and got Super Emeralds for each character in S3&K years ago, but jesus some of these are satanic.

Hold square and X during the intro animation before it tells you to press any button on the bottom of the title screen. Don't do blue spheres cause the game will crash if you complete a stage because reasons.

Try holding square and cross while Sonic dances, and keep holding, then when it says to press a button, try either options or the touch pad.

Forces ties in to mania in some way or another.

Is this the Dark Souls™ of Sonic games?

I just want the fucking Mean Bean/Puyo Puyo minigame and &Knuckles mode so I can never touch this shit again.

No, it's actually good

What the fuck do I do after I get past all of the electricity shit in Act 2? I lose speed and fall every time after hitting the spring.

Nah, just an influx of people who have no experience with the Genesis Sonic games.

A follow up to the Level Select code:

The Secrets for No Save Mode, that you unlock by getting at most 10 gold medals or 20 silver medals, specifically Debug, Sonic's abilities, and &Knuckles mode . . .

They can be used in the Level Select code. Just set them up in the normal place (highlight No Save under Mania and press the instructed button), then back out to the title screen, do the code, and bang, Debug mode, special abilities, and Knuckles as your sidekick.

No, it's the most forgiving Classic Sonic and among the most forgiving Sonic games in general.
>Rings turn giant at high ring counts, making them easier to collect
>Saving
>Game shits lifes and shields at you

but on the bright side, the 2D games we DID get in that era, were true works of art. because 2 things hit the big leagues together. more advanced 3D, and CD quality audio with the PS1/Sega CD. So you had game devs putting impressive and cool 3D effects into the 2D games for flavor, while at the same time, you had the sound people used to working with limited console synths, now able to flex creative muscle. Which leads to stuff like smooth jazz in a castlevania game., and the eccentric soundtrack of Sonic CD which included rappy vocal bits

>Rings turn giant at high ring counts, making them easier to collect

No, they turn giant when you pick the blue ring box.

>Steam says it wont be released in another 12 days.

Where the fuck are you guys playing this? the PS4?

I just beat it tonight. Some annoying part but still enjoyable. You just suck at the vidya

What the fuck is with the special stages?? For one they are almost impossibly hidden in each stage and then the handling is completely fucking ass in them. It's like running on ice.

It's like they said "let's take this really cool idea and shit all over it!" Fuck damn

Any of the 3 released platforms:
Switch, PS4, and Bone

At 150+ rings you start dropping a few giant ones regardless of whether or not you have the powerup.

Yes even in the PC. But it was not enough.

I really love 2d sprites and 3D mixed together

>>Rings turn giant at high ring counts, making them easier to collect
that's the combi ring. A gimmick power up brought over from Knuckles Chaotix.
>>Saving
didn't Sonic 3&K have that already?

>>Game shits lifes and shields at you
the lord giveth and the lord taketh away.
and takes them away. They are both extremely easy to lose. like all sonic games.

that said, the timer is a bigger threat than it used to be because some of the levels are really too big for the default 10 minute timer.

I've seen some giant rings fly out of me at high ring counts, but they usually just fly off the top of the screen where I can't get them. I assume this is how they make it so you can only recollect so much.

Oh shit it's out on PC?

>playing video games on a computer.

Lol

some of these blue sphere levels man

>that said, the timer is a bigger threat than it used to be because some of the levels are really too big for the default 10 minute timer.
I actually like this. I felt like the original games were too short to need the 10 minute timer. Even in Carnival Night before my young child self eventually figured out how to beat the barrel, it felt like it would take forever to time out.

Now the stages almost feel designed for it, as if to say, "Quit fucking around, do you know what game you're playing?!"

Feels good.

Overrated? Sure thing pal

No you fool

Because that thing the kingbot and eggman were fighting over was the infinity stone, somehow related to the chaos emeralds and master emerald.
It opened a gate into time and space when sonic hit it as super sonic and the chaos emeralds were able to interact with it, which absorbed the infinity stone and 'classic sonic' sending them into the future.
It can then likely be assumed that it's either some timeline where sonic was never around (and the 'modern sonic' is from the main timeline that also gets flinged there), or he just took over the world off screen. Infinite then gets the infinity stone, infinite also likely being from another timeline.

>Theme of the final boss in Mania integrates Forces theme
>Sound effect for the gem in Mania is the same as Infinite's cubes
>Sonic's pose in the art for the true ending is the same as classic Sonic's pose in the first Forces trailers
>Eggman in Forces specifically refers to classic Sonic as "from another dimension" rather than from the past
Mania Sonic is the Classic Sonic in Forces. Mania is its own separate universe where none of the post-Adventure drama comes to pass, sequels will probably reintroduce characters with different spins on them. Basically if you've ever read an elseworlds comic, Mania is just like that.

have they just retconned the time stones at this point?
i just assumed it was a 'master' time stone or something considering the warps and the little planet

I came across a few glitches in these two levels.

After my invincibility music ended the levels sound didn't come back

Also, at one point when sonic was upside down on a ceiling (when where you're supposed to run on) he was just walking and didn't fall.

the real question is how much of the game had to be changed to accomplish this gay ass connection

Some of the ceilings are magnetized.

>tfw amy really isn't unlockable

Honestly? Not that much. Seriously, aside of the ending cutscene and Fist Bump, Mania is self-contained.

I imagine more of the game had to change due to the devs running out of time, even with their delay.

A game like this was probably pretty tough to pull together for such a small team, and even some who are first-timers for full, real development.

The time stones are not on Earth, they're on its moon.
The infinity stone was buried in angel island, so it has some direct connection to the master emerald and the chaos emeralds. Also, time stones are just time, whereas infinity stone is time and space.

Probably very little. The original was probably similar, and if anything, might have just used the master emerald instead of the infinity stone. Or used some different stone entirely.

you can softlock after robotnik on green hill if when it stops scrolling at there's a dip to the right and sonic can't run up it to trigger the cutscene
he just stays running forever

Does someone has a link to download the soundtrack ?

While there's probably no salvaging the momentumless 2D sanic in forces, I hope that they recruit whitehead to do the physics for future classic/modern mix games.
It would be even better if they end up doing a Halo remastered kind of thing where you can flip between the 2D sprite work stuff and the 2.5D graphics on the fly.

Why was PC delayed... It's not fair bros...

Considering mania will probably be their best selling sonic game in a decade, I think they'll definitely give an offer to everyone that worked on it to either continue making sprite work sonic games, or help with the engines and level design of the 2.5D games.
Either way, I don't care if it's spritework or 2.5D, the important thing about sonic is the physics and the level design, which mania does amazingly at 80% of the time.

>get all the emeralds
>lose the desire to explore
>rest of the game is trivialized by super mode
this isn't as fun as I thought it'd be
I don't really wanna do no save mode either

....sauce

Laugh at this fucking autist with me Sup Forums

>rest of the game is trivialized by super mode
only half the levels at best
the ones with a strong chance of being crushed (chemical plant, metallic madness, titanic monarch) will still give you trouble

why would you ever play as knuckles/tails? they're way less fun than sonic and their super forms don't even look different
also is there any point to me playing through as sonic alone after finishing it as sonic+tails?

>no death egg
i'm not disappointed, but you would have thought it was the obvious choice for the final stage or super sonic stage

coolblue

anyone care to gift an user with a code for the game on Switch? I'll be your friend if you do.

you suck, i like that you can turn super in the second zone like s3k

This. I've never seen the giant rings pop out unless you have the blue ring. They just made losing rings Chaotix-style where rings fly all over the place, including up in front of the screen.

>handling is completely fucking ass in them. It's like running on ice.
When did you start vidya? Fighting the controls is a time honored way of adding difficulty.

>Play the game once as Sonic
>experience all the levels
>Play again for all the emeralds
>skip through all the levels after you get the 7th emerald (even worse if you did this on your first run of the game) just for a shitty final extra boss
>Play as Knuckles
>experience the same game for a third time, just for an extra level
>All the blue spheres unlockables are pointless extras
There's no replay value in Mania

I got trapped in the puyo puyo game. it didnt launch me out after i won and i couldnt move or spindash.

≥REASON #04: No love for Sonic 4
It’s bad enough that SEGA won’t make episode 3 for Sonic 4 and pulled the plug on it. But the fact that it didn’t get any representation in this game whatsoever is just more evidence that Mania IS made for nostalgia whores! WHAT!? Is it now a sin to have Modern Sonic play in the style of a 2D platformer? Are those bitches really that upset about the physics in that game, that they immediately dismissed Sonic 4 off the classic canon? Or do you hate this game because Classic Sonic isn’t in it!? God forbid if that’s the fucking case!
Sorry for reopening that can of worms, but it needed to be said! Fingers crossed that they have plans for DLC for this game and they at least add 1 or 2 levels from Sonic 4.

>the one with only 4 fucking blue spheres

This image will never not be relevant.

lol lmao!!!

>that's the combi ring.
Combi ring turns all your rings into giant rings. You still spit out big rings among the smaller rings if you get hit with a ton of them

you asked for a Genesis style Sonic? you got it

I don't see that specific one in the usual place. Is it locked behind some patreon bullshit or something?

dsp about to face octo nigger

I wanted something more than the genesis games, this is supposed to be a game based on the saturn era, the generation after.
It's been around 20 years since 3K and even with people who can replicate the classic engine, they can't surpass it in content

That's somewhat fair though. Episode 2 featured a couple decent parts (namely the bosses and White Park) that had the misfortune of being in an mediocre game.

AHHHH WHY ISNT IT OUT ON PC YET

datamining, there is still more shit to find

What else could possibly be left?

the triforce duh

I'm sure it's been said, but Oil Ocean's boss is horseshit. I went from 10 lives to 0 because the fucker kept pulling platforms out, which would be fine, except when he did that the oil suddenly became blank space. For the game this meant I sink instantly to the bottom from a jump, so I kept jumping when he grabbed the platforms and fell to the bottom. I can't imagine this is an intentional mechanism. He shouldn't even be very hard, you can get 4-5 hits before the fight even really starts...

Sonic Mania has well designed boss figh-

Has Iizuka actually said anything along the lines of "Mania team has gone too far"?

That fight was fun as hell. Jumping on the propellers and hitting him was easy. Maybe you just suck.
