Squeenix will eventually have to include a 1vs1 mode since the demand for it seems pretty high. The closest to a 1vs1 mode we will get for now is a offline single player mode and additional battle rules in online lobbys.

It's unironically one of the worst arena fighters ever. Only a step above Budokai Tenkaichi and OP Burning Blood. Only thing keeping it popular is the brand and the insane ass production values. The RPG system was neat, true, but the actual gameplay was a boring slog of a mess.
