Going out of your way to add so many natural details to make a character uglier is less time spend on gameplay and story. It also require more attention spend to the animation which can in turn leads to input lag and reduced gameplay possibilities in some cases.

It's especially worse for studios who use actor scanning technologies and spend so much cash just to have the latest hip hollowood actor in the game, it's marketing that adds nothing substantial to the game.

Its the same reason all the betas play as chicks "why not look at a girl butt while I play" because not everything is meant to get their dicks hard but theyre too beta to not do it

It takes as much effort to model a good looking girl, and I'd rather have something that is straight up better and takes as much work.

You assume that the character models were beautiful in the first place. I would argue it would take more time refining beautiful traits out of a default model.

How does a character's face or body aesthetic change gameplay? If It's a fat character doing action scenes maybe it would be slightly trickier for animators, but I would hope that they can use their talent to overcome.

Go to your favorite detailed character creator game and try to make a good looking person. Make sure you change all default values since the defaults are usually attractive. I promise you you'll make an average looker before you make a stunning one, especially for men.

Whatshername in Horizon is ugly. Her face shape is weird and tall/ovalish. Huge man cut jaw. Her eyes/nose/mouth are all pretty close together which gives her too much "headspace"/skin for the rest of her face. Pretty big ears but lots of people have bigger ears so whatever. Ugly, disgusting, more than likely unwashed and unkempt hair. 5head. Good body overall though. Etc.

She's is purposefully unattractive. There is no reason to go out of your way to make your characters unattractive (another good example is Sara from ME:Andromeda). You don't need characters who are all 10/10, but you don't need characters who are 0/10 as well. Why make a character a 3/10? Why not just a 5/10? Or a 7/10? What good does it do to make them ugly?

Plain wrong. I do character modeling and I assure you it takes far more time and talent to make naturally and realistically uglier characters.

The more realistic your model is, the more uncanny valley becomes a problem.
The more polys you use to simulate those ugly details, the more difficult skinning becomes which lead to trickier and more time consuming animation rig set up, which lead to animation restrictions easily starting to appear, which leads to gameplay ideas being cut.

I'm not arguing that you should or shouldn't play a game based on attraction to characters (the 387599975 poster). I'm just arguing that there is no need to make a character ugly.

A character doesn't need to be a 10/10 to be a good design. But the MC of Horizon is fucking ugly for no reason, and so are most of the other characters in the game. It just is weird. Why make the that way? What could it possibly serve to not make them normal/attractive? What could it possibly serve to make them ugly? Especially because the design of the MC used to be much better.

Creating a believable ugly character is not the same as creatong a bad 3D model.

Aloy isn't treated as a beauty queen in the game. However she isn't a complete uggo either. You can think she's ugly and that's fine, some people think she's attractive. I think that is about as 5/10 as you can get.

If thats true then I have a few questions . Do you have a standard of video game beauty? For example let's say you compare all your models to Lara Croft. Do they look like her do do you try to switch up or mix up beautiful traits to see how far from her you can get while remaining attractive. I would argue that is to add a bit more of realism. Like other anons are saying, you find already normal/ugly people inside. Actually 10/10 people are rare, and so they might add a few defects to make her more relatable, like crocked teeth and such.
Thoughin this case I argue with you. She's essentialy a caveman living in the wilderness without sunscreen, makeup, bodycare products, soap, toothpaste and such. If realism was the thing they were aiming, she should be WAAAY uglier.

The only female character I can think it was made to actually be ugly would be Rachel from Binary Domain, and that somehow made me like her a bit. BD was a good game and Charlie made my dick hard as diamonds, though that's hardly relevant now.

To me, immersion is everything. If I was modelling a table, I'd want to make it look like it belonged in the world. This would include scuffing and other imperfections if it was anything other than factory new, especially if it was handmade by some peasant.

Obviously, that's the ideal; in the real world, you can't spend all your time designing incidental assets. But I'd definitely put in the development time to make my main character fit the world.

The answer is simple, because video games don't naturally exist, they are manmade. Why would you make something that's average when you can make something that's above average? Let's say you have a character with an interesting backstory that doesn't reference his looks in any way. If you make the character ugly then he's simply inferior to the exact same character if he'd be not ugly.
