Stop parroting shit you heard on Sup Forums
>Gordon realises the true might of the Combine
>Alyx has been spirited away, the Resistance will surely fail and he has hope of surviving
>the end credits are Gordon drifting towards the Dyson Sphere and falling into oblivion
That's a big Dyson Sphere.
> Implying a space fairing multidimensional craft WITH WINDOWS wouldn't be cable of making those windows filter out harmful rays.
Don't mix today's precautions with tomorrow's solutions
not even him but stop being retarded
>>the end credits are Gordon drifting towards the Dyson Sphere and falling into oblivion
That's not what happens though. The Vortigaunts save him and he gets transported into the distant future where nobody knows who he was or what happened.
>imagine being Gordan Freeman
>imagine having battling the combine and seemingly winning, he launches a last ditch plan to destroy their world
>imagine being completely awestruck that you are not fighting against a planetary civilization, but one with such advanced technology as to build a structure around a star
>imagine your despair, seeing your most devastating attack, leave nothing more than a pock mark against such awesome power
...
>the Resistance will surely fail
No they won't, the Combine on Earth are stranded without the Borealis and portals, and the humans will slowly outnumber them now that they can fuck and have babies again.
>he gets transported into the distant future where nobody knows who he was or what happened.
That's not really part of the story, it's obviously Marc talking directly about Valve, the wording is very weird compared to the rest of the plot (how could there be new members of HIS research team from black mesa?)
I wonder how portal works in on all of this since that lemons guy used to harbor the borealis
>No they won't, the Combine on Earth are stranded without the Borealis and portals, and the humans will slowly outnumber them now that they can fuck and have babies again.
The thing is it doesn't matter. Humans can't stop the Combine, at the most they just caused them a mild inconvenience for all their efforts. Even if they drive them away, who's to say they won't just come back?
... Are there any fps where you can go blind at any point by staring at the Sun?
>implying modders won't have it made by Christmas
Now that its been spoiled its kinda not worth it. There will never be that huge "By the way you never could have won." kick now.
If SPV3 and Black Mesa can be made I see no reason a modder can't make a game using Marc's script.
>Even if they drive them away, who's to say they won't just come back?
They won't? Combine have shit portal technology, that was the whole point of the episodes. The combine only got to Earth during the portal storms originating from Black Mesa, then they quickly transported the citadel to get a solid portal directly back to their staging area. The combine were trying to get to the Borealis to reestablish that connection, but without any portals, the empire can't do anything.
What SHOULD have happened:
>Black Mesa caused the apocalypse etc etc
>Gordon can't defeat them alone
>modest shower curtain salesman and wide eyed optimist Cave Johnson somehow holds the secret technology he accidentally discovered that is the key to defeating the combine
>Gordon finds it and wins
>lifelong adversaries Aperture and Black Mesa symbolically coming together for the first time to save the universe
Instead we got some bullshit how he had this great time machine and it did jack fuck and shit. Way to go. The whole series was pointless and everyone dies. Woooo.
for you
Portal had fuck all to do with Half Life. Little easter eggs are nice, but their stories should not mix.
I don't think Valve would've released the story as is. People like can't handle tragic endings and there'd be a shitstorm of vocal people begging Valve to retcon/change the ending.
The main mcguffin of HL has always been teleportation technology. Portal would fit into that perfectly.
Fuck, Episode 3 revealed that the portal gun was just a beta version of the bootstrap device
That sounds fucking stupid
You're an idiot
Aperture and Black Mesa are canonically in the same universe
WITNESS FREE MAN
TRUE DESPAIR
>freeman walks up up stairs but slips on the ice
>cracks his head open and dies a painful death
why the fuck is he still not wearing a helmet
Why would GMan leave one of his most valuable assets to die and instead take the girl he had to babysit across the country instead?
I know he has some sort of plan for Alyx too but why would he LEAVE Gordon instead of just taking him along too
Portal was a spin-off. Aperture Science was a real place in the Half-Life universe, but the story of Portal doesn't matter at all to it.
GUYS
GUYS, WHAT IF
SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LISTEN A MOMENT
WHAT IF...
THE MOOOVIE was Ross and Marc trying to bring Half Life to some kind of end all along
Gordon isn't special. He was just the right man in the wrong place and managed to get shit done just out of sheer circumstance.
>letting all that light escape
Nice dyson sphere faggots.
He was angry at Gordon after he cucked him with the Vortigaunts
He basically fired him and hired Alyx instead
Alyx was the asset all along apparently; Gordon was just the person best suited for protecting her. Alyx was supposed to become a time lord or something
Because Gordon wasn't an asset anymore, he effectively went "rogue" when the vorts broke him out of stasis, interfering with Gman's plans
>Car Boys ending music plays
Well her dad ended up dead, it drove her to carry out his dying wish without thinking or hesitation. Maybe having Alyx think that a close friend and man that idealized the resistance died would drive her to do something crazier.
Are you sure about that?
youtube.com
>Why would GMan leave one of his most valuable assets to die and instead take the girl he had to babysit across the country instead?
He had outlived his usefulness, very clearly. Why do you need this explained to you?
He's been grooming her to become her perfect 'asset' since he rescued her in Black Mesa.
Also the vortessence shit in ep2 could've added some kickass gameplay gimmicks in her own game.
At the pace Valve releases games, why do they feel the need to have these dramatic opened ended cliffhanger endings for all of the Half Life entries? I mean imagine if Episode 3/Half Life 3 actually came out with the same plot as that synopsis after 10 whole years, people would flip the fuck out.
could just be spite for siding with the vortigaunts
Fuck I loved that chapter of episode 2. Removing antlions with your Vort buddy and learning more about their culture was so fucking good. Not to mention that part where you have to hold off the antlions with those two guys.
You know, Freeman on board of the Borealis looking at the Dyson sphere is going to become one of the most iconic images of gaming.
I can see it: thousands interpretations from thousands of artists, giving their own version of something no one will ever get, ever.
You can actually end the series with that. All the loose ends are tied, and all that remains is a bit of mystery. Perfect ending in my opinion.
That felt good
To be honest, i replayed ep 2 today and it's just a boring slogfest.
Antlions never were interesting enemys and while the vort is charming he doesn't say too much with value and you only see him half the time anyway since you constantly split up
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE GNOME AND HIS SPACE HEAD CRAB BUDDY?!
FUCK THAT
WHAT ABOUT ADRIAN?
WHO'S GONNA TAKE HIM FOR A WALK
No, not at all. The ending resolves nothing of what happens back on Earth. It is a pretty big hole that makes leaves efforts Gordon goes through in the HL2 up in the air.
>SUBJECT: FREEMAN
>STATUS: UNKNOWN
>NO FURTHER COMMENT
non-canon
get over it
>That's not really part of the story
Shut up, jesus christ. Its the end of episode 3, and a prelude into HL3. I dont doubt he may have used that setup to make a hint as towards the current climate of valve but jesus christ shut the fuck up
>something no one will ever get, ever
>implying we won't eventually get a HL3 fangame
It might take a decade or three, but it'll happen, mark my words.
you seem kinda angry user, everything ok?
lets be honest this game would have been shit, we all know it
If this had been made, it would have been Half Life 2: Episode 3. It wouldn't have been a radical departure from the previous HL2 entries, why would it have been shit?
We literally have Breen's Grub textures. Why has nobody made a model yet?
hl was alwyas completee fuckign garabe
The credits playing while you sat on the ship approaching this stupidly enormous Dyson contemplating futility, before finally being pulled away by the vorts would have been such a good ending.
???
so what i think the symbolism is as follows:
>HL1
GMan gives scientists the crystals needed to start the resonance cascade and, ultimately, the Combine invasion (US discreetly incites a civil war/revolution in a middle-east country, prompting for Russia to invade)
>HL2
GMan brings the most able operative, Freeman, forward in time to now cripple the Combine's presence on Earth, as well as get rid of the Combine's puppet, Breen (US uses a popular, exiled leader from the country to lead ANOTHER revolution, this time to topple soviet authority in the region, as well as end the puppet communist government)
>HL3 possibly
GMan destroys the Borealis, accomplishing his objective while leaving Freeman to die, instead taking Alyx, who is far more easily manipulated (US comes in after the region is destabilized, securing the resource (oil, WMDs, etc) needed to cripple Russia. They either exile or assassinate the previous leader, installing another puppet dictator under the guise of democracy)
y/n? credits to another user for the basis of the theory
>mfw I've never played any Half-life game before
What am in for bros?
Didn't Gaben say that he wanted to revisit him sometime though?
be more like
>STATUS: FIRED, PRESUMED DEAD
Is there even any evidence that Gabe Newell is still alive?
The Source Engine as is could never do it justice.
Source 2 could probably cheese it with some creativity, but Source is so archaic that it struggles to wipe its own ass as is.
Breen didn't deserve this
>Franchise ends with protagonist reaching total despair.
God i hate you faggots that always need stories to be an allegory for real life events. You lack creativity
G-Man is the Deep State. Alyx is women voters. Combine is the unstoppable spread of Islam.
Cave Johnson is Trump.
>> Implying a space fairing multidimensional craft WITH WINDOWS
it's literally just a giant cargo boat
Do we even know if he's a real person?
THat's a good point.
The Borealis that Gordon rode to his almost suicide death was made by Aperture.
>M-MUH DYSON SPHERE!!11!!
>COMBINE STRONG!!
A Dyson sphere? That's it? So the Combine are a Type 2 civilization?
It only takes a Type III Kardashev civilization to wipe the Combine with ease. They aren't unstoppable.
Fuck off with that useless shit scale.
No one said they were unstoppable, but bear in mind human civilization isn't even on the Kardashev scale.
>an empire that builds a megastructure encompassing an entire star and rips its way through multiple realities to conquer planets in the blink of an eye is "that's it"
Gaben says a lot of things, like shipping episode 3.
With the portal gun it would ahve been easy to fuck up the Combine.
1) Shoot a portal onto the inside of the dyson sphere
2) Shoot the second portal opening into the star inside the dyson sphere
3) Bug out of there
You didn't read it, the Vortigants pull him out before he dies. Which is how he can write the letter in the first place (and be saved for HL3 itself) .But we won't ever get that.
Also the Combine themselves are very weak compared to the tech inside the Borealis and whatever tech Gman has access to, which is why they want to destroy them both.
that's assuming the dyson sphere is made out of moon rocks
>stares at sun
>with fucking glasses on
>and a prelude into HL3
you're retarded
Dyson spheres are normally made out of the material already existing in the solar system, which is more or less moon rocks.
>Half-Life 1
Less story driven, more shootin'. Bretty gud sci-fi IMO
I guess its a horror/sci-fi/hallway shooter if you want to boil it down to as few words as possible
>Half-Life 2
Nice grim atmosphere, still really solid gameplay. Peak facial animations for sometime thereafter
Maybe the vehicle parts are a little drawn out
Little bit more of a fleshed out story. Some say it's a meme story but if you are into sci-fi, its cool
Buttblasted Combine detected
Yeah he kinda did. He was an asshole.
I don't get why they don't just pass it off onto another developer and publish it.
Sad endings mean sad customers who don't buy the next installments of games that are released. Disney himself knew this which is why he modified the fairy tales he animated so much. The ONLY reason Valve would do a tragic ending is if they were killing Half Life off forever. But they couldn't even do that.
On that note, ep3's ending isn't so much tragic as it is another cliffhanger to get people buying HL3 which would have contained the "real" ending which probably would have been some time travel bullshit to stop the Resonance Cascade entirely, since the Borealis has teleporting time machine inside itself.
I don't know, doesn't seem that tragic to me. I mean, sure it isn't 100% happy, but Freeman did survive and there's a big chance that the resistance managed to eliminate the combine on earth, so not everything is bad.
somebody chas to photoshop gordon wearing solar eclipse glasses.
The bigger issue looming beyond the Combine was that the Earth was irreversibly fucked on multiple levels. Even if the Resistance won, the planet was still being overrun by Xen life and was barely habitable for the native species. One implication of Gordon waking up on an Alien looking beach who knows how many years into the future could mean that Earth kept changing and humanity is extinct now.
>Portal 1
Super-tight gameplay framing a clever story. Like a short story in game form.
>Portal 2
Gameplay is still quite good. Story is more loose and too many characters, but has some really powerful elements that are worth experiencing.
Those aren't cliffhangers, those are open endings. A very common kind of ending.
