Playing Automata first spoils the first game so if you have the a PS3/360 i'd recommend playing them in order

It depends on what you are wanting or expecting from it. If you are buying it because you want an extreme amount of sexual fanservice or waifu'd 2B enough that you want to play as her, don't buy it. If you don't have any immediate waifu attachments, it will be easier to go through the game without being upset like some people ended up being. Also, if you are wanting crazy action similar to Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Rising, Bayonetta, and all the like, don't buy it. The combat works well and is smooth in its animations and movements, but it is not deep. You can do some cool stuff, but there's not much to explore in that department.
The game is standalone from the first Nier, but it is recommended that you play that first so that you can pick up on all of the hints Automata presents and make it more enjoyable. If you start with Automata, it may be difficult to go back to the first Nier, but that's all up to you since its optional. The music is good. The story is neat, though its impact depends on how attached you get to the characters (mostly subjective). The console version has some slowdown, but nothing too influential. If you want a different kind of experience, then you can consider it, but I will not guarantee that you will have the greatest time with the game. You may find reasons to like it, but you will find the gameplay to be ranked lower than other reasons that cause you to like the game.
There's your warning. If you're not comfortable yet, wait until it gets cheaper, otherwise go for it. For the most part, you won't hate it and you may end up liking it, but it may not present enough to be your next favorite game or close to it. Just don't come back here saying "Sup Forums tricked me" or whatever similar nonsense.

I think it's pretty overrated and makes me want to play bayo instead since the combat is pretty shallow. still good and ending E is fantastic. I'd say its worth 40$

It's not mandatory. You can play Automata first and still enjoy the original afterwards.

Automata is like a 7.5 to an 8.0 out of 10. It's not one of the best games ever but it's pretty good. Its biggest strength is its ability to elicit emotions (mostly sadness). Its biggest weakness is that just like Nier the game gets very repetitive in certain parts which obviously isn't very fun.
