How do you decide which games to play with a keyboard and mouse vs controller?

Multiplayer """competitive"""" redditor games with kb+mouse; fun games with gamepad. It's really that simple.
If I don't need full attention I play with a controller.
If I'm fucking your mom I use a keyboard and mouse.
>can it be played with a controller?
>if yes and it's not an fps or rts, I choose the controller
simple and I'm not even a consolefag
Anything that requires accuracy i use Keyboard and mouse.
Platformers, fighting games, etc., i use a controller
Mouse and Keyboard for every game unless the game itself is crippled in some way (bad ports like Overlord)
Exception: vehicle sim games where analogue controls are objectively better
I only play games with a controller when they basically force me to do so by having extremely shitty KB&M features. Stuff like Dark Souls 1 and Nier Automata.
I fucking loathe using controllers otherwise and it's the one thing keeping me from replaying Automata, I don't wanna use a fucking controller to play it and aiming with the mouse is fucking horrible in that game.
I play fighters, action games, and drivers with KBM, and FPS and platformers with a controller. Can't understand the on/m meme with FPS, two sticks for movement is far superior.
>wo sticks for movement is far superior.
How come there's never been a person at a PC shooter tournament playing with a controller when it's so "far superior"?
...
...
But the accuracy needed for FPS' fits perfectly with a mouse
Autoaim in cucksole it's just so cheap
mouse/kb: anything requiring precision targeting, anything with first person perspective.
controller: anything that benefits from analog movement and doesn't require pinpoint targeting accuracy.
...
It's usually so obvious that it doesn't even require thinking, but if one had to make a general rule:
>games that focus on movement with gamepad: platformers, 3rd person action games, driving etc.
>games that focus on aiming or menus with kb+m: shooters, RPGs, strategy etc.
If it's a challenging game KBM
controller for comfy ones
KB+M for like any shooter or faggot nerd boring games like mobas and rts
controller for most other things
Any games that have driving/flying I use controller. I also prefer controller for Metrovania games and 2D topdown games.
3d platformers and racing games: controller
Anything else: KB&M
Quick aiming such as FPSs? Mouse.
Quick moving around, such as action hack and slashes? Controller.
I also already played Controller + Mouse at the same time on MGRR, felt the mouse was better for precision cutting.
Play comfy games with a controller
If it's too fast or cumbersome like an online FPS or an RTS I use keyboard.
For the vast majority of things I use my Steam Controller.
If it requires two sticks (Like Metal Gear Rising) or the camera stick (Like Owlboy) I use my WiiU Pro controller.
If it just needs a dpad and some buttons I use my Pokken controller, or my WiiU pro if Pokken is short on what I need.
Fucking faggot
t. brainlet
Games that are mostly about me moving a character in a three-dimensional space: controller with alogue sticks.
Games where I have to manage multiple different elements or interact with menus a lot: mouse.
2D-Platformers are best played with a d-pad by the way, fighting games with a stick (but I could handle a controller).
Don't really play shooters, so there is that.
Controlling camera with a stick is pure cancer.
I hate controllers.
For single player?
FPS = Mouse and Keyboard
Anything Non fps or 3rd person shooter = Controller
Well, I am not good at mobas because controlling movement with a mouse is unintuitive to me, since I grew up mostly playing with controllers.
But I don't go around calling kbm "cancer" just because I am bad at using it.
I recently realized that batman arkham games are practically unplayable with a controller. Just awful. In fact most games are better played with mouse and kb, you just have to try playing with both to know. I usually prefer to play platformers, hack and slash/beat them up games and driving and fighting games with a controller. Everything else with mouse and kb especially shooters.
Turn off auto aim and try saying that again.
Well, the Batman Arkham games are unplayable mostly because they play themselves, refusing to be played by you. I don't think it's the controller.
I'm just feelin it you know?
I use a controller for everything I can. It's the better device across the board unless a game simply doesn't support it like many older games or strategy stuff.
FPS, CRPGs and RTS, KBM
everything else, gamepad
Okay, let's actually discuss something somewhat interesting rather than make lists of our preferences:
I totally agree that a mouse is very good for aiming, much better than analogue sticks or even motion controls (even if they are actually better than their reputation in this regard).
But there is another thing to a shooter: movement. Movement in a 3-dimensional environment. And wasd/esdf is not very flexible in that regard. As long as you don't have an analogue keyboard or whatever, you will not be able to get as precise movement from a keyboard as you get from an analogue stick.
So what can be done to get the best out of both world? Some weird kind of hybrid controller? Playing FPS games with mouse and joystick?
Nah, I know that's the popular opinion around here. But in my experience when you have like 25 enemies on screen and some have shock batons, shields and all that, you have to know what you're doing to not take damage and loose the combo. And that is when the problem with using a controller arises. You can't control the camera quick enough and to make it worse, it controls itself spinning aroung constantly and desorienting you. Also the bindings for some actions are terrible and you can't change them. It's just so much better and easy to play with mouse and kb.
Considering people have been doing all kind of trickjump bullshit in Quake/Doom/Counter-Strike on PC for decades, a keyboard is more than adequate for "precise movement".
Prime example: "Defrag" Quake videos
This one used to be my favorite, but it's not available with original sound anymore due to youtube being jews. There's download links in the comments though.
youtube.com
>It's a mustard gets defensive because somebody mentions analog movement episode
I know it is adequate. People have been playing shooters with controllers, so these are "adequate" aswell.
But my point is, could we get better than just adequate? Could we get more precise movement WHILE still having precise aiming?
I did, now what?
analog movement is important sure, in a melee combat game or a fighting game. but not in an fps. Why? because there's no reason to not be going max speed in an fps, unless it's to be quiet, in which case you have a crouch ability. The mouse handles changing direction far faster and more accurately than a controller can. So really there is no reason to use a controller for an fps other than being used to it and not caring about being bad.
depends on how much punching you do
any pro wrestling moves mean controller is required
>it's a 'controllers are better for third person shooters even though you're still aiming with a reticle and in some cases even looking down the sights in first person view' episode
Third person shooters are also superior on KBM
i like to play lying on my bed so play everything with a controller. only game i play with kb/m is dota 2.
First person is KBM and Third Person/2D is Controller
if it was developed for PC/ is an FPS I play with KB+M
anything else contoller
and when I say developed for PC I mean exclusively developed for PC
Controllers for fighters and games with stealth where being able to control my movement speed would be helpful, keyboard for everything else.
>people ITT think third person games are better with a controller even though nothing is different except your camera perspective
You clearly haven't tried Vanquish on PC with a mouse after having suffered through the DS3/30FPS version
I play everything on a controller except strategy PC only shit and sim games (e.g. Cities Skylines, Planet Coaster, The Sims etc)
I play FPS on console because Pcbros are tryhard faggots who don't know how to have fun. also I just prefer using a controller in general honestly, sue me.
Go full tryhard with k&m and I could still kick your ass in dark souls
I play everything I can with a ps3 controller, it's the most comfortable to me.
>I play FPS on console because I get my shit pushed in on PC and want to be matched with windowlickers on my own level instead
KB+M always unless it's broken or works very badly.
Controller for those exceptions.
You're not wrong, I play games to have fun, not compete with fat fucking losers who play CSGO all day on 5000hz 8k monitors and have been practicing since 2005
Do you have to make precise camera movements or need a lot of different buttons/ can benefit from a lot of hotkeys? Use KBM
Any other situation? Use DS3/ switch controller, maybe steam controller depending on the game
kinda remind me of this
Stop trying so hard to justify your retardation, user. Just stick to console FPS with the other diaper wearers
Dark Souls is completely playable with KBM if you install the fix.
>I take video games seriously
>I think anybody with a modicum of skill in a PC shooter must be some basement dwelling loser to make myself feel better about the fact I drink bleach in my spare time
But why would you ever take time to get good at a video game?
...
might aswell cut one of your legs and join paralympics because I mean fuck other people are just tryhards man
Why even play videogames at all? Just watch Pewdiepie bro!
you know, people have fun with games in all different kinds of ways
maybe don't be so butthurt and you won't get the responses you're getting
there's no need to defend your play-style on a Venutian Dimensionweaver Board
>Athletics are comparable to video games in any way
well people are tyring but in the other option its handicapped people () trying
Emulator - controller
Sandbox driving - controller
Driving game - wheel and pedals
Everything else - keyboard & mouse
Sometimes while playing Battlefield 1 on my PS4, I'll set the controller down midgame and microwave something to eat. Sometimes I'm gone so long I'm kicked out of the game. How does that make you feel?
It should make you to think about getting a hobby that you're actually interested in.
>platformers don't require accuracy
You should have just said "I've never played a difficult platformer".
Well that's because you're objectively wrong and they're not.
Mouse is inferior unless that's what you're more comfortable with, which means you are damaged goods using a crutch.
Are you a women by any means because your speech sounds like you have a total lack of ambition.
if that's how you have fun then go ahead
how did you think I'd feel?
It makes me feel indifferent because I didn't pay more on average to play a gimped version of a shooter I don't give a shit about while also not having to pay for my online twice just to play against other people
I'd rather spend my time getting good at things other than video games, like fucking your mom and sister
Should Resident Evil be played with keyboard or controller?
Really struck a nerve there.
stacy
Depends on the Resi game but most of them would play perfectly fine using either, it's just a matter of preference. I usually play through Resi 4 with a controller but I played Resi 6 and Revelations 1/2 with keyboard and mouse and they were great
He obviously means accurate aim, user.
> mouse+keyboard
First person games and strategy games.
> controller
Platformers, racing games, fighting games
Third person adventure games or whatever are fine with either.
KB&M for FPS/TPS/RTS/MMO's or anything where a mouse will be generally be better like games with a heavy mouse driven interface. Controller for pretty much everything else JRPGs, Action/Hack n Slash, Emulators etc. It's a pretty good 50/50 split for how much I use my controller and my mouse and keyboard.
Judging by what you save on your hard drive your idea of fun is lining up blades of grass on your thigh and stabbing an eraser with a pencil.
People vastly overrate the benefits of analog movement. Being able to instantly change direction at full speed is far more valuable than being able to move at a slightly different angle.
Most people aren't retarded and get good at the game just by playing and having fun.
>series was born on pc: kb/m
>series was born on console: controller
It's simple.
It's obvious you don't know what a platformer is.
Racing games/Third Person RPGs/platformers = Controller
Everything else, Mouse and Keyboard. This is the only correct answer, honestly.
Keyboard and mouse for everything
WASD has its advantages too, such as being able to instantaneously stop or change directions, swinging an analog stick to the other side is going to take longer than pressing or releasing a button and it goes through the dead zone.
The issue of only having 8 directions to move in is in very large part mitigated by the vastly superior camera control, since actual movement usually results as a combination of movement controls and the camera control. The mouse not only allows you to make very fine adjustments, but it's also quick and accurate.
Switching to an analog stick from 4 keys wouldn't be a straight upgrade in either case, you get analog direction control but lose on agility. Analog direction control is largely mitigated by having a mouse too.
Anything that primarily involves driving with a controller. Anything in which the main focus is aiming with KBM. Although I just started playing Mad Max and using a controller feels awful.
Getting better is a natural consequence of playing even if it isn't an objective. If you keep doing something you will inevitably develop your skill as you adapt and learn from your practical experience. Or at least that's how it works for most people, anyone who has been playing games for a while will have already developed general skill sets for the popular genres which will then act as a base level for new games.
Steam Controller is the definitive way to play any game that involves driving and shooting like GTA.
>Full analog triggers
>Get the benefits of mouse aiming and most of the accuracy (As much as you'd need at the very least)
>Can put sprint on a backpaddle (SO nice)
>Jump works well on the camera pad or backpaddle
>Move both stick clicks onto the face buttons so you don't need to fuck with that shit
It's a GOAT setup
I pretty much use KB+M for everything unless it's a genre that's just better with controller like fighting and shit.
