Sahelanthropus suffered from drastic changes in direction during its production. It was originally intended to be AI-controlled but the entire AI component had to be scrapped when Strangelove left the project. When it was redesigned for a human pilot the skeleton that was already built couldn't support the weight of armored pilot's chassis. The final product is a disjointed piece of shit that really only serves to look scary and is completely nonfunctional without Psycho Mantis.

OK, so it's basically the mess of a plot I thought with the pod detail. Having seen the pod in Peace Walker and Huey's lab though, that thing was way bigger than a human and would of course way more. Them claiming it would throw off the center of gravity or just not be able to fit a tiny person in the cavity it replaced was idiotic at best, plus Huey had already programmed something that could walk and maintain balance.
