The real irony with Lincoln as the protagonist is that he's meant to be set up as a sympathetic hero, yet within an hour of play he's completely lost his moral high ground and just turns into a violent thug bent on killing his way to the top.
Or that they should have just stopped with 2. 1 was pretty cool as an antithesis to GTA's freewheeling nature and 2 had a decent plot but barely any side content outside of DLC.

I didn't get to play so far into the game but i got the feeling Lincoln was more of a self-Insert lead character with him being a former soldier and all, I got the feeling the priest was the one meant to be sympathetic for I mean he did narrate the story after all (or was that only the beginning)

Most of the game is Lincoln taking on a rogues gallery of increasing racist mob figures, and at every turn you reminded THIS IS HOW THEY TREATED DEM POOR DINDUS IN THE SOUTH. More to the point, once he's retaken the Hollow, he starts getting armed by a CIA agent to the point that he's a one-man army.
As for the priest if you chose the ending where Lincoln kills his followers to solidify his power, the priest plants a bomb in Lincoln's car

That the game is fishing for sympathy without realizing that the gameplay destroys any possible sympathy one could have. How am I supposed to feel guilty for the treatment of blacks by whites when the blacks are murdering whites left and right?

Claude, Tommy, Niko, Johnny, Michael, Trevor, Huang, and Toni are all either white or Asian. On the black side there's CJ, Franklin and Vic Vance.
He was probably one of the best in recent memory. Mostly because they just wrote him as a dude and absolutely no attention was put on him being black.

The soundtrack and the cars were pretty cool, but otherwise the gameplay put me to sleep.
Diablo 1 and 2 had the black dudes as (some of) the most powerful characters in the game. Pic related is Diablo 1's Sorcerer, who only took a few levels of mana starvation early on, and then ended up becoming a hellfire-unleashing machine of death, teleporting everywhere, having more survivability than the other classes (Mana Shield, unlike D2's Energy Shield, made your mana pool work like a straight-up health pool with some damage reduction thrown in, and a high level mage with good gear [which wasn't hard to come across in D1] easily got to over 1000 mana whereas a Warrior could only hope for around 500 HP). The final difficulty throws in some characters entirely immune to Magic Damage, but the Sorcerer can whittle them down with Stone Curse, summoning a Golem, and swapping to a physical damage sword, or just skip them altogether (with Teleport) because the two final bosses aren't fully immune to damage. You can just zip to Lazarus and fireball him to death, fly away to Diablo and eviscerate him as well. Everything else still gets melted. I liked my D1 Sorcerer so much that some fo my mage alts in WoW are modeled after him. He had a badass voice too.

D2 had the Paladin, but it's a tiny bit more ambiguous as to whether he is black, sometimes the lightning doesn't make him look like it. D2's Paladin was one of the most versatile characters.

They're pretty straightforward with how lincoln isn't much of a hero. They show him being crazy brutal, even his underbosses aren't fans and the priest regrets calling the CIA. The CIA guy even calls him basically a weapon in his flashback thing. It wasn't a perfect game, but I think them showing lincoln as basically a ruthless piece of shit against other pieces of shit was pretty cool.
unless we are talking about GTA most other game with black men as protagonists have been been major flops. No one wants to be a nigger.
