Gen 7 basically comes down to sales vs games. If you go by sales, Wii objectively won. But then PS1 wins Gen 5 and PS2 crushes Gen 6 to the point that it's not even funny. If you go by games then that's a completely subjective thing but I think most gaming enthusiasts will say that either the 360 or the PS3 had the better games (especially including multiplats) despite fewer sales.

Why do people say the N64 won Gen 5?
The PS sold the most consoles. (100 million lifetime vs 32 million on the N64)

The PS had the most diverse gaming library of that generation, outright rivaling the SNES in amount of RPGs, Shmups, platformers, and nonstandard games like MGS.
It's top 10 (52.02 million) sold more than the N64's top 10 (32 million)

Like I get the quality over quantity argument but there simply were more outright better games on average to pick from on the PS1. Meanwhile every game you've liked on the N64 was played extensively by everybody else, because there was nothing else to play.


It's like when people say the PS3 won the seventh gen. Like, no it didn't. That would be arguable if you talk games but from a pure objective standpoint it didn't.

Naturally I agree with you because the PS3's overall library was shite and the Wii also had Castlevania the Adventure Rebirth. But as far as the mass market is concerned, the ps3 was the subjective winner.

Japs cleaned up their act, released some really amazing games. PS4 has some great exclusives. Wii u was ok, xbone is a literal paperweight. Switch doesn't really count into this gen either, and even if it did, it's too early to tell and currently still has almost no games.

Doesn't matter what happened in the future, the OP is asking what console won which gen. And back then, Xbox 360 won. Sure a lot of franchises had their last good game on the console and then Microsoft killed them, and now their console (xbone) is a paperweight. But back then Xbox 360 had the best library. Fuck Microsoft, but they won that gen.

When you're comepetition is a console with almost no third party support, and a console with universally inferior third party ports your library wins by default.
