How is this never in talks for the Game of the Year?
jrpg
/thread
It's definitely GOTY desu, it's a very popular game and it's better than BOTW and Nier: Autobeta
Sonic Mania was good too
Because BotW is gonna sweep this year except for one or two publications who will give it to Odyssey.
Pretty much this. JRPGs don't have huge mainstream appeal anymore and GOTY awards are basically just a circlejerk nowadays.
I honestly have a theory for why Persona 5 was so strange.
I believe that Persona 5 was originally going to have a much darker storyline, but they made it "family friendly" for some reason part way through development. This is why it was delayed multiple times.
There are a lot of unused things in Persona 5, such as the scene of Joker holding the jail cell bars and shaking them all pissed off, as well as an all out attack cut-in that featured Joker with a much more "evil" face. There is also Joker's Persona Awakening cutscene. Why does his whole face burn off? Why does he look so evil in that cutscene when there is no reason for him to do so?
I'll need more evidence to put this theory together, but it's what I honestly believe, because holy hell, the game is really all over the place in tone. The original trailers indicated that it would be a much darker game with a lot of moral grey area, but the game we got was teenagers saving the day again like in Persona 4.
if this topic was discussed in the game it would be a 20 hour arc
Odyssey better beat BOTW. Based Mario needs to kill some faggots off once and for all. This shit needs to end.
Because it came out last year
>turn based gameplay
Wow so fucking revolutionary!
It's a high school anime with shit gameplay attached, that's why
you don't think that the (((journalists) will give it to a stronk western game like DOS II, HZD, or We wuz assassins n sheit?
>Not an open world game
>Not a movie game
Because its a jrpg, and it came out in the same year as a Nintendo game. And despite all the technical issues, the copy pasted shrines and other issues, you don't beat Zelda, its game of the year, even if it wasn't anything special.
>World wide release
>2017
Is not thaaat good to be honest
News flash
Persona 3 was also about teenagers saving the world
Not enough cut scenes
This game is so so bad! That's why is a candidate for game of the year!
No, Nintendo magic beats all of that. Metacritic doesn't lie
>42 hours of cutscenes
>Not a movie game
Yes, but it had a much darker tone, while in Persona 5, they literally mind rape people and the game is like, "YEAH, THEY'RE THE GOOD GUYS. DON'T THINK ABOUT IT LOL".
The game literally asks the question, "ARE THE PHANTOM THIEVES JUST?" but doesn't go ANYWHERE with it. You can even just imagine Ryuji saying, "DUH, OF COURSE WE'RE THE GOOD GUYS. SHITTY ADULTS, AMIRITE???" without any REAL consideration. Why even ask that fucking question if you didn't want us to think about it? What the fuck? The Phantom Thieves literally got a man murdered.
because it's not Persona 4, so no one cares about it
Skyrim won way more GOTYs than Skyward Sword and all of its innovate Wii controls bullshit. Persona 5 has a better chance than possibly even Odyssey but would still probably lose to Breath of the Wild.
Weeb shit for weebs.
Go jack off to hentai until you're balding a job you hate because you failed school.
I approve the theory, but still, every good review is deserved because in P5 the core gameplay from Persona is polished, new mechanics fro dungeons are added and the presentation is magnificent. Not because a story is more or less edgy or symbolic.
Hmm. On the one hand, the game as we got it is already not family friendly, even by Japanese standards. Characters talk openly about rape and drug dealing and the scene where Joker gets shot in the head is pretty graphic. Even if they did make drastic changes to the story partway through, I don't think their purpose could be described as a "family friendly" one, because in the case they would have cut a lot of other content as well.
You're absolutely right though that the game is all over the place in tone. The atmosphere is really thick in the beginning of the game, the cops are on your ass all the time, no one at school trusts you, Sojiro hates you, etc, and all of that melts away after the first dungeon or two and it feels like you're playing P4 again. I was pretty surprised by how lighthearted the final product turned out to be. But I think it's more likely that that's attributable to simply bad writing rather than drastic design changes. Consistent writing is hard.
Eh, you have a good point. The turn based gameplay itself is good and fast paced, but if the story isn't good, I can't really get through so many hours of the gameplay. I quit literally right near the end of the game because I dreaded another long gameplay trek and I actually like the gameplay
>weebshit
>but it had a much darker tone, while in Persona 5, they literally mind rape people and the game is like, "YEAH, THEY'RE THE GOOD GUYS. DON'T THINK ABOUT IT LOL".
Fucking bullshit they were hung up over that nearly every other conversation. How many times did they consider ending the Phantom Thieves? It was definitely more than once. Also if you played the fucking game you'd know they didn't kill any of their targets.
>Characters talk openly about rape and drug dealing
Yeah, I guess? But still, it's just so toned down. They don't ever say the word rape and none of the kids that were dealing drugs were really... dealing drugs? They were sort of just doing it because they were blackmailed or something. There weren't really any morally grey characters. It just didn't really work, I usually have a reason and can describe how I feel, but in the case of Persona 5's narrative, I can't.
I like this one better desu. Everyone has this heavily stylised and edgy flair to theirs which are really in line with the aesthetics of the game, and then there are Joker's and Akechi's which just look kinda plain, like they're from Persona 4 or something.
A consistently wrote game was planned to be released on 2014.
I personally believe that if the game didn't postpone to 2017, the game wouldn't have ended with the polish and almost perfect final product Atlus brought.
From what I remember, they weren't that fucked up about the consequences of their actions at all. It was never dealt with in a meaningful way. And yes, the Phantom Thieves basically got Haru's dad killed. This was the part that really made me drop the game, was when Haru's dad FUCKING DIES because of their actions and Haru doesn't INSTANTLY quit The Phantom Thieves. I would be fucking RUINED if I believed something I did killed one of my parents, but Haru, literally the next day is like, "Naw, it's cool. I'm cool."
WHAT
You act as is P5 was anything special in itself. Poor writing and shitty dungeons really keep the game for being GOTY more than anything else coming out in the same year.
>hmm maybe we're not in the right
>something conveniently happens right afterwards
>I've made up my mind effin rotten adults
every time
First post best post.
Fucking this. It honestly pissed me off and is what made me drop the game. They always hint that maybe their actions aren't the correct ones, but then some circumstance literally forces their hand and makes them have to mind rape people against their will again. I quit right at the end of the game and I fucking doubt this gets addressed.
EVEN IN FUCKING PERSONA 4 THEY TRY TO ADDRESS THE MAIN CHARACTERS ACTIONS
Like seriously, what the fuck?? It was obvious the Persona 4 crew were the good guys but they at least TRIED to be like, "Naw, dawg, humanity wants to be shrouded in fog" and it made you at least fucking consider like god dammit this isn't worth it, I'm ending the post here, you get it.
>no more randomly generated dungeons
>instead you get a linear one that handholds you from start to finish
atlus, home of japan's finest dungeon crawlers
Its basically Persona 3 but better in quality of life aspects.
t. never played Strange Journey
Exactly this. You can repeat the question 100 times, but if you never actually explore it, or really give us ANY reason at all to think that the Phantom Thieves aren't doing the right thing, then it's as good as not asking it at all. Every villain they went after was cartoonishly evil, why would we not support the PTs? Except for Sae really, that was the one time they were mainly in it for personal gain, but of course that angle was never even addressed once.
Does it do anything differently from the standard JRPG formula?
It could be an expertly crafted game with high production values across the board, but if it's still nothing new then it doesn't deserve to be game of the year unless there really was nothing better.
that's exactly what I meant, can't they lend some dudes from the EO team to the Persona team?
name some revolutionary games made in 2017
Yes. It's honestly so fucking cheap. They repeat the question a million times throughout the story but it doesn't mean anything. It's cheap because it tries to seem deep. I wouldn't even care if they didn't ask the question all the time, but they did, so they forced me to think about it and be disappointed.
Dungeon crawling isn't the primary focus of the Persona games though, making Nocturne/SJ tier dungeons would honestly detract from the intended experience.
The only flaw for P5's dungeons was that they had fast travel when you could tell from Kamoshida's that it was originally intended that the player would progressively unlock shortcuts to get to the boss. Fast travel is almost never a good inclusion in any genre of game.
Will PUBG be the first early access game to win game of the year?
If Haru wasn't desensitized to death, violence, and torture that would've bothered me more, but yeah I wish she'd at least be skeptical of the Phantom Thieves at least up until late November. You have to remember that Haru's Dad was a huge piece of shit and the cause for wanting the Phantom Thieves to do something about it in the first place.
>beat villain of the month
>get literally one line hinting at what made them the way they are
>nuh uh eff you stop blaming others
Since we're just airing our grievances about P5's story now, can we talk about a bit near the end in the Mementos Depths? When Shadow Shido and Shadow Kamoshida talk about how the general public is trapped in Mementos, and the people with the willpower and individuality to escape are the ones who form Palaces? Implying that all the Palace owners the PTs were after were the most genuinely authentic members of society, and by destroying their palaces, they were mind raping them into being conformist slaves again. THAT would have been a really cool concept to explore, something that would have saved the trainwreck of a story and added some real moral ambiguity to the PT's actions. But of course, after that one conversation, this is NEVER ADDRESSED AGAIN. Really pissed me off. They wasted such a good opportunity.
persona games are calendar optimizers
only play if you are interested in operations research
Game's mature enough in terms of themes as it is. But it never becomes unnervingly-dark, even when they all started disappearing i coudln't really feel anything because, well, it was all their fault and it was hard to believe that they're gone for sure. Previous games nailed it way better.
-very segmented yearly release
-insanely long "intro" makes it replay unfriendly
-xenoblade 2 overshadowing in jRPG discussion
-story was worse than previous 2 persona games
-BotW and mario odyssey will sweep anyway
Dude that MUH MORALLY GREY shit is has been done in every flavor can you possibly think of in every setting and medium, outside of sheer illiteracy I don't know why you would crave more trite writing.
The reason why they don't angst over it in full detail is because the game is long enough as is.
>palace alert at all time high
>life will change starts playing
>get really pumped up
>teleport next to treasure
P5 is like Dark Souls II, in that it's predecessor built up so much cachet that "journalists" felt obligated to score it highly without understanding what was supposed to be good aout the series in the first place.
People will go along with them, continuing to pay lip service and say that P5 is great game, but the writing is on the wall, the honeymoon period is over and we're already seeing that the luster is gone.
It's not itself a bad game, on paper it's what it was supposed to be, but something is missing, after all the hype, delays and fanfare, it just wasn't the game we wanted it to be.
>If Haru wasn't desensitized to death, violence, and torture
When was this established?
>You have to remember that Haru's Dad was a huge piece of shit
All we see is that he works hard running a huge corporation, showers his daughter in gifts and an expensive house to live in, and tries to marry her to a guy. What a fucking horrible monster. Maybe if Haru wasn't such a fucking push-over and literally said, "I don't want to marry him, it would make me unhappy" he would have done something different. My dad is kind of an asshole to me and makes me do stuff, but if he died I would still fucking freak out. I thought Japanese people cared more about family shit than western people???
P5 was in development hell and caught in the middle of Atlus getting bought by Sega. Through most of that time Atlus released fuck all in the SMT area.
>the absolute state of Sup Forums
>that MUH MORALLY GREY shit is has been done in every flavor can you possibly think of in every setting and medium, outside of sheer illiteracy I don't know why you would crave more trite writing.
Because I am a fucking human being, and in the modern age, human beings are fucking skeptical. We crave meaning in what we do. You should ALWAYS consider the motivations behind people's actions, like what the fuck??? This means that we should be skeptical of the phantom thieves. THE GAME ASKS THIS QUESTION REPEATEDLY AND WANTS US TO BE SKEPTICAL OF THE PHANTOM THIEVES
So why doesn't the game address it?????
ITT: user binge read a game and get angry about it.
am I glad that this is the last persona game, leaving it a high point in terms of gameplay, music and aesthetics but at a somewhat meh everything else. hopefully refantasy will be catherine tier good with no series baggage expectations and obligations attached.
>Through most of that time Atlus released fuck all in the SMT area.
They released two entire SMT games though.
>Every game that has cutscenes is a movie game
fuck off you memeing faggot
also you clearly didn't play the game if this is your only argument
This, it's a good jrpg, but in the end of the day it didn't amaze or surpsrised anyone in any way, it met its expectations and stopped there
>Because I am a fucking human being, and in the modern age, human beings are fucking skeptical.
do you wear a lot of eye makeup, dude, because your post reads like it was written with a lot of eye makeup
>last persona game
Not if Atlus can milk the shit out of it. Persona is mainstream now
It's a fantastic game overall, it's just that P4 was nearly a decade ago and people's interests moved on.
The average Japanese would rather play something on a portable, a co-op game or something on their phone than spend a million hours in a single, slow story-driven RPG.(unless it's DQ)
i feel like p5 was focused more on tiny life details than feels that will stay with you like p2/3/4
also it's weird that i enjoyed more hanging out with Yusuke than your main bro
then there's stupid unnecesary go to bed sections because uhhh
personally imma take automata as my goty cuz platinum combat, amazing ost and feels
zelda was fun but combat is too casual and exploring stuff stops being that fun after 100~ shrines
It would at least make sense for Akechi because he's not supposed to fit in.
last persona game by the P3/4/5 director, forgot to put that in
source?
the market for persona games is not and has never been the average japanese
these are niche games
p4 was just unexpectedly popular outside of nippon
Jrpg of the year at best, the game has some rough edges as well also what did persona 5 bring to the table that was revolutionary enough to deserve GOTY?
But hey, let's agree on something.
The first 10 hours are not only motherfucking great but is the best introduction to any game this year.
And yes, I say this even with games like BTW in mind.
And we wouldn't be so pissed off if the last hours of the game delivered what the first hours promised.
>When was this established?
It's brought up in Mementos.
>I thought Japanese people cared more about family shit than western people???
I don't know if its a cultural thing, but Haru's life was anything but normal. She was freaked when her Dad died, but after going through a living manifestation of all the fucked up shit he was doing over the span of a month I'd feel uncomfortably bittersweet about it too.
But MUH EVIL ADULTS user
I'm not on a good terms with parents but i would be furious if their presumable killers were in front of me. Not to mention there's Futaba with simular situation and she almost killed herself after mother's death.
polygon.com
>Polygon, kill yourself
Not an argument.
>SMT became so casual it received these ratings
Fantastic.
>polygon
Kill yourself
P4G was the height of the series though and the gaming landscape hasn't changed that much since, in fact I'd say it's a way better time than 2011 was in terms of people not just playing CoD anymore.
P5 just isn't as good.
just archive it bro
Persona 5 could have been better if it was more 'morally grey', because Yaldabaoth had some good ideas but then they have to make sure that people know he is evil by filling tokyo with blood and bones, they could have expanded the yaldabaoth ending because its honestly the more morally correct one.
>high point
>music
P3 soundtrack > P5
>GOTYs being revolutionary
>The first 10 hours are not only motherfucking great but is the best introduction to any game this year.
Honestly can't tell if this is bait or not as the first ten hours are an incredibly dull and on rails tutorial.
because technically it was last year game
it's subjective, I shouldn't have said that and I don't intend to discuss this further
You don't get to play much in the first 3 hours of persona 5 compared with games like Nier/Zelda and Horizon non Anime fans aren't too happy about that
SMTIV OST and DDS OST >>>>>>>>> any Persona OST

>high point in terms of [...] aesthetics
Yeah, I really like the Shadow the Hedgehog red/black motif.
You're not a normal human being though. You're a either a child with a brain that has yet to fully develop, or you're legitimately damaged.
If it's the latter, you should be aware of that fact, and refrain from embarrassing yourself. However, I suspect you're the latter so let me spell something out for you.
They do address what you're complaining that they don't, they just don't completely waste time showing the characters angsting to the degree you imagined, the story doesn't fit in your shallow autistic box that you've created in your mind.
The fact that you're stuck on this particular issue is really telling. Of all the problems with P5, better sperg out that it doesn't waste time touching upon a subject that has been done probably millions of times. You. Are. Illiterate.
>intro of the game promises a tale of epic heists from heavily-guarded locations
>no epic heists, you just beat the shit out of everyone and every thing like every other JRPG
>the epic heist shown in the intro isn't even a real heist and none of the people are real, you're just in some fake gay alternate dimension which makes the stakes feel so much lower
I feel like I fell for the bait and switch, hard.
DEEP BREATH
DEEP BREATH
DEEP BREATH
exactly its all about who bought the most ads and Atlus cheap arse definitely didn't spend much in the marketing department.
I was pretty bummed that Madarame's palace is the only time you do an actual heist despite the pre release footage showing you, Ann and Morgana planning stuff at Leblanc.
>nowadays
They always were.
