This is what 90s kids played

>this is what 90s kids played

How did you guys cope? This shit looks terrible. It's like a pixellated mess.

Pretend you're watching an animated comic book with no speech bubbles. Really, it just clicks more.

It was glorious, OP.

This is advanced, too, compared to what I started with.

I'm 34. My gaming began with the original NES. I'm old enough to remember actual television commercials for NES games. I was there when the hype for Mario 3 was unreal. I had the joy of knowing my grandmother was coming, who always spent the big bucks (50 was a lot for games then) and was bringing me Mario 3.

A few years later, I spent Christmas morning playing Street Fighter 2 on my SNES.

A couple more years, and I was drinking cherry Pepsi and playing 007 on N64 with friends from the neighborhood, fighting over that one dick that always chose Oddjob and cheesed with proximity mines. It was fucking glorious.

I sat on my porch, playing a pixalated version of Diablo on my Playstation with my buddy Lee.

When this game, MGS, came out, it blew people's minds. You needed the back of the case to figure out Meryl's codec number. That fourth wall break was fucking awesome, and it was full of them.

So, to answer your question, yes, it was a pixellated mess, and it was the greatest years of our gaming lives.

The games your generation has now has the benefit of the BEST technology ever, the best graphics, VR, all sorts of stuff - and your games have no soul at all. They're all the same. They're boring.

You're boring.

it was a masterpiece you fucking child
you need to be 18 to post here

I remember begging my mom to buy me this game when I was a kid. I played the shit out of this game and loved every second of it.

also 34. user is 100% accurate.

1998 was the greatest year in gaming and this game was part of the reason.

True, and yet it's much better than anything released nowadays

While I didn't play MGS in the 90s, you have to remember that most people played on small CRTs. Given the lack of fidelity of CRTs, I would say that most of us also projected their own imagination onto the pixels. A good example are those threads where someone posts some pixel icon from Warcraft or Starcraft and everyone has a different answer about what it is.
Basically, the limitations enhanced our imaginations.

Early 3D was ugly. Most of us were perfectly willing to disregard that if the games were good though.

>Given the lack of fidelity of CRTs,

Stop.

MGSV is better than that clunky ugly turd

No, shitty base building mechanics and "parachute everything" gameplay is not better.

MGSV doesn't even have proper boss fights. Its an utter piece of shit.

Both bait.

You're right. I should have said, given the lack of fidelity of the games. Still, a small 4:3 CRT didn't help what OP calls " pixellated mess."

I replay MGS1 pretty frequently and don't mind the graphics at all. perhaps it's nostalgia, but I can look past it.

On some respects, yes. V is a mess in design though, and many of its better elements are nullified by the worse in it, making for a very disjointed game.

MGS has aged for sure, but I think overall as a complete package, it still works very well.

Better than shitty controls, shitty camera, and shitty linear stealth

WHATS THE MATTER user?!?
>DON'T YOU LIKE GIRLS?

They weren't terrible at the time, kids in the future will look back at the current gen and wonder the same.

>They weren't terrible at the time

Oh come on, yes they were. Just limiting to consoles, going from some of the beautiful last SNES 2D games to the early PS1 3D ones was excruciating at the time.
Let alone going from some of the most beautiful PC games of the time to early PC 3D.

The loss in artistic flair alone was tremendous.

>Oh come on, yes they were.

They werent. Shit was amazing compared to what came before it.

MGS was graphically groundbreaking in 1996.

I did all this but I was better at it than you

>going from some of the beautiful last SNES 2D games to the early PS1 3D ones was excruciating at the time

says that user that obviously didnt grow up until the 2000s

Honestly? By not playing them. I'd rather play 2D games, even today.

you must be 18 to post here

Says that user that started playing when Magnavox was hot shit.

Groundbreaking they were. Groundbreaking and beautiful are two different things though.

MGS1 looks fantastic, FF8 and FF9 also both look fantastic.

Stuff like Mario 64 and Ocarina don't look very good and don't hold up but plenty of games from that time do hold up.

It looked great.

>everyone on the 90's were a sonnigger

nope, some of us were playing on better hardware.

Just look at Unreal.

PS1 was awful even back in the day.

>mfw 18 years ago was 1999, 4 years after MGS.
>mfw a 10 year old would have played PS3s and 360
>mfw we really are that old

Damn, this makes me want to replay MGS1 again.

MG2 and MGS nailed an atmosphere that no other MGS could top, and I wish the plot was kept as a gritty military thriller rather than the mess of AIs and The Boss/Big Boss felating-fest it became.

We got to see gaming evolve before our very eyes and play them before it became more corporate and sterile, I don't regret being some 2000s snob like op

YOU GOT ME IN MY FEELS user
HOW DARE YOU
TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER NOW

user, you have to keep in mind that most people were playing shit on the NES and SNES/Genesis before the Playstation/N64/Saturn era and 3D was new for consoles (And PC was just getting to the point where 3D Acceleration cards and GPUs were not complete garbage). On top of that, we were playing on CRT TVs where many developers used various tricks to make the game blend and look far better for the specs of the time. On top of that, cutscenes with a lot going on and voice were uncommon at the time, so MGS was a huge deal at the time.

Granted, I am not going to sit here and say every game that came out looked amazing back then (I thought FF7's visuals looked like garbage even when it was new). I'm also not going to say that everything aged well, but you have to put yourself in the time period.

GRAY FOX

Yeah well now you know what it feels like when you see an user talking about how ANY game in the last ten, twenty years "looks like shit".

And MGS wasn't even particularly bad looking. Look at Driver, or pic related.

>played motherfucking DOOM when it was the newest shit
>made the jump from classic Mega Man to Mega Man X
>experienced Super Metroid
>was awed by the mobility and fluidity of Super Mario 64
>witnessed the birth of the PS2/Xbox era when companies had the experience and power to bring 3D games to new grounds
>could look forward to all those god-tier Capcom games before they went full retard

That was pretty amazing.

>I only play modern games

>90s fags had their minds blown by THIS
>90s fags still think that THIS is the greatest game of all time

O I'm laffin'

I remember thinking even back in the 90s that 3D was awful and a step down from 2D.

>Let alone going from some of the most beautiful PC games of the time to early PC 3D.

No, they were shit. Stop being asshurt because PS1 had better games than PC, you PC cuck.

PS1 era graphics specifically lent itself super good to densely atmospheric experiences, but I can't quite nail down why.

back in my day we used to ride horses through snow for 10 days to play video games

You're laughing because you're a bonafide faggot with shit tastes.

The CRT helps with pixelated messes actually.

>Make love to me Snake!
>Love?!

Skyrim literally has more content than Dark Souls and yet the experience feels fucking bland

CDs had enough space for lots of really cool art, it was low fidelity enough that developers had to pick distinctive aesthetics to work around that, and it was before the PS2 era of blur o vision.

>It's like a pixellated mess.
the bar for the suspension of disbelief was lower, mgs cinematic intro and voice acting really immersed you in this

Luckily, I played the far better looking PC version.

The one on the right is literally a better sprite. Look at his shoulder. His arm is lower on the right one, letting you see his jacket above it. They're different.

33, going on 34 in December here.

100% correct here user.

It's just a different frame of animation.

i think it looks great. meryl looks like a female:muscle girl soldier, unlike today's models where they're either skinny or have the bodies of 40 year olds

>mgs1 vs ff7 as greatest game of it's time, if not All time
metal gear Solid wins hands down. It's a far better Game than FF7, I'm a 19 year old young fag and even I know this

Why aren't doujins of this scene?

It is criminal.

you mean Mantis controlling her and forces Snake to fuck her against his will while Mantis levitates in the corner jacking off? That would be hot

Yeah no, just because textures didn't spazz out doesn't mean it was better looking, or better anything. It's pretty subpar as far as ports go. Not to mention it's literally running PS1 code in the background.

It was 3D. That was more than enough. When you grow up with 8bits and 16bits consoles, any 3d games were something outside the curve.

thats why i played pc games, consoles couldn't compete

holy shit you're either really young or really fucking old and dumb

Did you play the BLEEM! version?

Maybe because Mantis is Asexual?

There's nothing more to add, really.

He could do it just to see if he can break Snake.

those were like top of the line graphics at the time. which is really all mgs has been muhgrafix

That's what SEGA fucking got for being cocky and arrogant

It was a good game. It had fun gameplay, an interesting story, and it was like playing an action movie. And at the time, it was considered cutting edge in terms of technology.

In any case, I've never particularly cared about graphics anyway. I played Neverwinter Nights for the first time a few years ago and didn't have a problem with the visuals. Good graphics are certainly nice, but they're not a huge deal for me. Art style is more important than sheer graphical fidelity.

>I had the joy of knowing my grandmother was coming

> slippery when wet.

was this really a thing?

It's not even a "version" you dunce. And I'm talking about the actual PC port.

Sega had nothing to do with it.

>in any case...

its the best game in the franchise retard

When you consider before this it was 2D pixels, it was a big step up.

fucking retard

Yup. Growing up when each console generation was a HUGE step forward was awesome. Kids today won't get to experience their minds being blown every 5-6 years.

Oh boy, you really don't wanna open that can mate.

>If you need to crawl, press the Crawl Button

How could they get away with this?

This.

I'd rather play a pixelated mess than Uncharted, GTA or Call of Duty

>played
i wish

And when we saw this shit it blew our fucking minds apart.

Nowadays whenever the graphically top of the line game comes out people just zoom in on the bushes in the background and count jaggies and whine

SPBP

>This shit looks terrible. It's like a pixellated mess.

And still it is a better game than all the shit released this year.

Joke is on you, millennial.

The fact Twin Snakes exists proves art direction always trumps graphical prowess.

>calling another a dunce when dicksucking the shitty PC port

You know its a fucking shame that this great explanation of what it was like to watch technology grow so quickly was written by a bitter oldfag in response to bait.

28 here, but started playing vidya with a famiclone, because poor family. I remember how my mind was blown when my dad bought PSX for christmas in 1997 and I saw Crash Bandicoot. Graphics were unbelievable and they hold up to this day. OP is a faggot.

>Yeah no, just because textures didn't spazz out doesn't mean it was better looking
Objectively and factually wrong.

>How did you guys cope?
You don't know shit, faggot. When I was young, I played shitty browser games in 0.5 frames per second on a leftover Win 95 office computer.

The sheer patience of my younger self baffles me today

the best MGS

>It's like a pixellated mess.

That's the thing. They weren't pixilated when released. A CRT TV displays the game at native resolution full screen. There's some jaggies on PS1 games, but not massive pixilation. You're viewing shitty emulator screenshots.

ITT: underage kids who pretend they are 30+ years old
i guarantee you there isnt a SINGLE person who is over the age of 30 and is on this thread right now

even the official mgs translator noticed this is just a series of mini games linking cutscenes.

On the contrary, I'm advocating emulation of the PS1 game.

Missing framebuffer effects, less poppy colors unless you switch to 16-bit (not even sure you can do that on latest OS), codec doesn't even look close to the bloomy LED one from Playstation.

Mednafen is the only way to properly experience the full chromatic depth of MGS with all of its post processing intact. Not to mention CD quality music and effects, and zero bugs.

>pixelated mess
>Metal Slug
IT's pixel Kino of the highest order.

>Mednafen

what does it require to set up? i feel like replaying psx games over the winter

Unfortunately the base program is not very user friendly, I think there are GUIs, but most people would recommend Retroarch.

Mednafen itself needs one from three BIOS fine, specifically the ones that go SCPH-550x. Also, please refrain from using hardware implementations.
