From a purely animal perspective, that actually makes a fair bit of sense. With a white man and a white child, the child could reasonably be from his tribe or pack or whatnot and so be a close genetic relative.
A half-black child is immediately obvious as a non-member of his group though, and therefore not a close genetic relative. Instincts don't like you expending effort and resources on things that aren't going to continue your genetic line.
Even if that thought process isn't conscious I would bet a fair bit it plays a significant role in the decision.
