Why do people call the Wii U a failure even though it still made a profit for Nintendo, and only expanded their warchest from the Wii era?

because it was meant to do a lot better and was discontinued quite early in it's life (at least a year earlier than it was supposed to, if not more). That said, I enjoyed the system.

compared to every other nintendo console aside from the virtual boy, it did abysmal

They fucking predicted it to sell 100 million

Because it followed the Wii and didn't deliver

Did they really make a profit though? On wikipedia it says that the console sold 14 million units and 100 million games. But we don't know how much research and development cost. We don't know how much manafacturing and transportation cost. We don't know how much their profit shifted throughout the console's lifespan with price cuts and technology price changes. We don't know how much their game development costs etc.

>and 100 million games
>That attachment rate
We're a dedicated bunch if nothing else

Less than 10 games per person is a lot?

Because the current generation of consoles are FULL of multi-plat games and the Wii U had VERY little to none of it. it was very contrasting, compared to previous generations. It pretty much went its own route with it's first-party releases and lots of gamers consider this the reason why it was a flop. Though most Nintendo handhelds and consoles seem to initially "collect dust" while waiting for the good games to come out, this one spent the most time doing so. and even the list of "good games" was even smaller on Wii U, compared to other recent Nintendo Consoles.

Can we please talk about how SHITTY the gamepad is? Fuck I hate even looking at it.

Blows the fuck out of the PS4's and Xbone's dude.

I find it surprisingly comfortable, only parts I hate are the shit battery and the triggers being recessed so far compared to the shoulder buttons.

The gamepad is top tier ergonomically and touchscreen menu navigation and offscreen play is the GOAT. You got shit tastes nigga.

>Nintendo considers the Gamecube a failure
>The Wii U sold half of that
Gee, I don't know why anyone would call it a failure.

Gamepad is the best part of the Wii U. If I could buy a gamepad add on for my PS4 I would in a heartbeat

If you count amiibos then they most certainly made a profit since they've sold about 40 million amiibo figures and 30 million amiibo cards, and I'd imagine them being very cheap to produce.

>Nobody is EVER going to make a program to make my WiiU Gamepad do offscreen play on PC
I want it so badly. I'd buy a second gamepad if it existed.

Because it's funny. You ever heard of just doing shit the teh lulz? It's what we do around here, kid

The gamepad concept was a miss. It is annoying and unintuitive to have to constantly change your sight from your lap to the TV screen. Not to mention the lack of games, awful marketing, poor battery and weak specs.

People like you think you're "doing it right" but in reality you make this board nigh unreadable compared to how it used to be.

Well, failure in the sense of sales, not profit. Everyone knows Nintendo makes bank on all their consoles, but it sold terribly. I like my Wii U, I had fun with it, but I don't consider it a very successful console.

I don't know about you but I can easily glance at stuff around me while staying focused on whats in front of me, like when I'm fucking driving

>Muh profit
lmao ninten babies

>what is an Nvidia shield?
That's still a thing, right?

To be fair, I'm a terrible driver

Lol did you read the article or just the clickbate headline?

>Why do people call the Wii U a failure
because it didn't get standard 3rd party games like CoD, FIFA, GTA and Ass Creed every year so normies didn't want it

There is a large group of people that only play the same 5 games every year and they determine what succeeds now, they outnumber us

>In an internal sales representative meeting, someone projected that we would sell close to 100 million Wii U systems worldwide.
Directly from the article

Companies care about profit, that's just a fact of life bro. You can't run a business without profiting off of your products.

>Because it's funny. You ever heard of just doing shit the teh lulz? It's what we do around here, kid
You're thinking of Sup Forums
Sup Forums used to talk about games

I thought the Nvidia shield was separate hardware?

What's gonna happen once my beloved gamepad dies? I am scared, there are games that won't even launch without the gamepad on.

You'd have to replace it, same as if any console/handheld dies

Take it easy, robocop. We all can't be as advanced as you

Oppertunity cost. They would have made more money with a less retarded console.

Nintendo's pretty good about repairs at least

>"In an internal sales representative meeting, someone projected that we would sell close to 100 million Wii U systems worldwide. The thinking was that because Wii sold well, Wii U would follow suit. I said that, since the Wii had already sold so well, we need to clearly explain the attraction of the Wii U if we are to get beyond that and sell the new system, and that this would be no easy task. I was responsible for selling the Wii U, and I knew what was good about it, so I talked with those in charge of sales about the importance of conveying the attractiveness of Wii U to consumers."
>some random unnamed sales guy said something
>all of Nintendo believes this

most people didn't know it was a new console
should have called it wii 2, 10x sales for sure

You think every single projection, accurate or not, is made by the entirety of a company? Every projection IS made by so me random unnamed sales guy.

I love mine but fuck I LITERALLY can't think of a less effective name and marketing strategy.

I live outside USA, and I asked the local dealer, they said they won't do repairs and don't even have pieces anymore.

I bought two pros and three wiimotes+nunchuck, anyway.

Long live WiiU.

No one can, we all knew it was fucked when we were all immediately confused at what it was

there's a difference between 'profit' and 'absolute mountains of money'
Guess which one console developers tend to set as their goal.

Just order an extra battery now while they're cheap

>Nintendo
>price cuts
This is how I know you never purchase Nintendo products.

hubris from the Wii
because it was a fad that sold to old farts, people somehow thought that would never end

Nintendo wanted that same audience for Wii U though

Despite having a lot of good titles on it (more than the Wii did, by a longshot), it sold VERY poorly because it was a stupid gimmick that distracted from those otherwise excellent titles.

Nintendo tried to get the casual market lightning to strike twice and it didn't. It was a fluke the first time and *hopefully* Nintendo knows that now and won't try anything like the Wii or wii U again.

They're clearly
1 Trying again with the Switch, just look at 12 Switch, Snipperclips, and ARMS
2. They're having monumental success compared to the WiiU and probably never going to leave the normalfag teat with kikeshima at the reigns

this. It's a shame really, I enjoyed both consoles, but the gamepad really was pointless

>implying every console isn't suckling the normalfag teat

Actually some of the most popular Wii U games have had price cuts to 20$.

nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Nintendo_Selects

>Wind Waker
>Tropical Freeze
>3D world
>Pikmin 3
>Super Mario Bros U

This Most Wii U owners have a copy of games like Sm4sh, MK 8, and NSMB U. I don't know of a single PS4 or Xbone exclusive that's played by the same proportion of console owners.

Because damage to image is often more important than some loss.

Neat. Which games?

Sure there are a few games targeted toward what Nintendo thinks is the casual market, but the console itself is not built for gimmicks. You can plug it into your TV and play it like a normal console without swinging your arms around or whipping your head up and down. The main problems of Nintendo's last 10 years are gone.

>THEY DON'T FUCKING COUNT
If I had a nintendo wojack it'd be uploaded with my post.

>but the console itself is not built for gimmicks
Two nu-wiimotes are the main form of input you get with the consoles

>>THEY DON'T FUCKING COUNT
You got a source? Who said that?

kimishima knew the Wii U was a mistake before they even launched it

venturebeat.com/2017/09/24/dragon-front-vr-card-game-gets-facebook-gameroom-2d-support/

I think he was genuinely asking

>This fucking response

This. Dual screens work with something like a DS because the screens are in such close proximity to eachother

Kikes tend to have good money sense. Still doesn't mean he's gonna be good for Nintendo's consumers. Just the shareholders.

Because it didn’t sell well and didn’t have that many games.

I partly blame that to Nintendo doing a horrible job advertising the console. They couldn’t advertise the console as a new system worth a shit nor did they do any sort of justice.

>check out the gamepad!

>Neat. Which games?
see Essentially the exact same games as the Xbox, give or take a few uncharted games

Until I can do this with the Switch I'm not buying one.

Honestly, the biggest problem is that Wii U never really got any exclusives that would be insta-classic tier. Sure, Bayonetta 2, SM3DL, Tropical Freeze etc. were good, but they surely aren’t M64/OOT/Metroid Prime tier. And when you combine that with those long dry periods, it just feels like the payout isn’t as good as it should be.

Even Breath of The Wild will be remembered as a Switch game now, considering that the majority of sales for it were for Switch.

as soon as the Switch is hackable it'll be the best console EVERY FUCKING MADE

>Even Breath of The Wild will be remembered as a Switch game now, considering that the majority of sales for it were for Switch.
I feel like that happens frequently with games that release on two generations of consoles. If you asked the average person what console Twilight Princess was on, they'd say Wii

Splatoon and Smash 4 are the WiiU's IMO.
Splatoon was pretty much instantly one of Nintendo's flagship franchsies after it came out. It appeared in branding with the rest of the main ones like Zelda, Mario, Kirby, etc that year.
Smash 4 is the greatest crossover to ever exist and I honestly think people will hold onto it like they do melee.

vgchartz is not a reliable source.

>b-but vgachartz!!!
classic

Agree. I had fun with it, but there’s very little there that would have me remembering it fondly 20 years later. Wii was much better on that regard, while it had a lot of annoying waggle shit, its highest points were much higher than Wii U’s.

Nice argument
