Sonic wouldn't work as an rpg because the more plot Sega puts in a Sonic game, the more they start to take the concept too seriously. Another rpg would likely reach 06' levels of poor writing.

Not to say you can't explore serious themes in a Sonic game Sonic Adventure 2's story actually does some really cool stuff, but when you have clones, ancient aliens, and cartoon hedgehogs making out with humans and shooting guns, you've gone too far.

Nah, action rpg would be even worse. If there's something that Sonic has struggled with even more consistently than good platforming, it's good combat.

Level 5 is almost physically incapable of making a fun game.

Also if you want a Sonic RPG go play Sonic Battle, it's close enough.
