Zero is more fun and can blend bosses in seconds.
X is only good if the game's weapons are good and X4-6 do not have good weapons so he's usually just bad.

I prefer Zero but X has some cool mechanics in some games.

It feels good to tear bosses to pieces with dash cancels but even if you don't abuse it his triple slash still does fucktuples more damage than Xs charge shot.
This carries on to the Zero games as well where chaining EX moves in combos means chunks of life are just gone.

I will say though that the best X games are the ones that don't even have Zero as a playable character.

I make use of every character in X8 because I don't like missing out on 100%.
Then again you don't really have to main a character in that game since there aren't limited upgrades spent between them.
I think zero needs some of his unlockable weapons before he really shines in that game though. The Glaive in particular is great.

I'm a Zerofag but I like them both, these two are work partners and their trusting friendship is admirable. Even if it goes a little off the rails at times. Like in CM where Zero throws a fit over X trusting others and stomps out of the room, but I just think it's rather funny.

Apparently not going full retard was outside of Colonel's programming. His backstory is that he and Iris were part of a program to replicate X's personality/programming, but the reploid they made fried itself from paradox bullshit because X's fighting spirit conflicted too much with his desire for peace, so they had to split its personality into 2 reploids instead. What a hilariously awful idea. How difficult is it to have a reploid go through ethical training for 30 fucking years when this reploid will be responsible for protecting thousands of lives, if not more? Fucking assholes.

On a side note for a hint of irony, it can be interpreted that Zero would totally bone girl-X, since that's pretty much what Iris is.

I somehow had forgotten that tidbit of back story about the twins. That's pretty interesting.

Yeah, it's weird how [THE SINGULAR DETAIL THAT KEEPS THE PLOT FROM FALLING APART] isn't actually talked about that much in-game, and I don't think it was even covered in the X4 manual. It might have been on an art book, though. The point is, they did a godawful job of conveying the plot.

The X series can be real shitty about plot sometimes and I hate it. There are still things I really wish we had real answers for.

Agreed, but I'm pretty willing to overlook a lot of details for the sake of making a better story in the here and now. For example, what happened to the cast of the Classic series really doesn't impact the events in X, and I kind of prefer that: it allows each subseries to maintain its own identity which, to me, is far more valuable as a player. I go to each subseries for a different tone and some switchups, and I like how each one has its own quirks and differences. That said, SOME closure would be nice. For example, a few details about Zero's design process (outside of a Power Fighters 2 ending) would be nice. Maybe some parts of a level could have an easter-egg or two for fans more in the know about Zero's origins. Or maybe a few upgrades for Mega Man that somewhat resemble X's features, like the charge shot looking a bit more like X's with a certain buster upgrade part. Don't even get me started on the shitshow that is X6, and X8 needs some real follow-up work because it actually features Axl as an endearing character instead of a freeloading piece of shit.

I really agree about the X8 ending. But as much as I want closure on the ending I really wouldn't trust them with making another X game.
What I'm also curious about is the period of time between Sigma beating up Maverick Zero and the start of the first game. A lot of people probably don't give a shit about that gap if they don't give a shit about Zero, but after the OVA I feel like I'd like to know more.

I agree about the length of time between the Zero/Sigma fight and the first game. I think it would be in the order of months, personally. Granted, almost everyone in the X series has a penchant for acting pants on head retarded, so a gap of years wouldn't surprise me, coming from Capcom's writing staff.
