Square Enix. They haven't used it since 2003 but since they are still selling it and because it belongs to a company it probably wont ever expire and so someone will have to buy it. I'd imagine at this point SE would be willing to give it up for not much

No. I've played Xenogears all the way through as an adult. It's a B-list FF spinoff that literally got rushed out the door unfinished. The platforming aspects and combat gimmicks pale in comparison to Super Mario RPG, a game Square developed several years earlier. The pacing is terrible even before the infamous second disc (at which point, if anything, it actually gets better). The level/world design is as linear and restrictive as anything released during that era.

And the story is a total mess. There are abbreviated or simply missing events left and right (check out the end of the Shevat sequence for probably the most egregious example of this, even stuff that seems very important like Elly synchronizing with Sophia's omnigear is missing and only referred to by other characters in dialogue) and many parts of the world, such as the church, feel rather undeveloped compared to other games with a similar focus on storytelling (like Tales of the Abyss or, obviously, Kiseki) - really the modern state of the world simply isn't explored enough in general, with very few locations to visit and not enough meaningful NPCs, leading to a sense of emptiness despite how detailed the setting and backstory actually are.

Saga had some similar problems though. 6 games planned and they gave up after 3 which was rushed and choppy.

I tried playing this game last year, and couldn't get through disc one.

Constant stop and go gameplay. So the characters can talk as much as possible. Hammy dialogue. Just awful, awful pacing. I'm going to assume the game eventually becomes difficult. But from what I played, the battles were piss easy. So I guess I can say it took too long to really get going with the battles. Which, again contributes to the awful pacing.

My entire experience felt like I was in a perpetual tutorial. Every zone felt like the introduction, as it kept introducing thing after thing after thing, without ever giving me time to just play.

Those things aren't as glaring in other PS1 JRPGs because the combat is less unbearable and there isn't as much text, plus I can't think of a single game with pacing as uneven as this one.

Only because you played them before. I just played Suikoden II for the first time like two years ago and it was far more of a slog than replaying Xenogears was.

I played it for the first time when I was 27 and found it rather cringy and somewhat embarassing. And the controls were almost as bad as in breath of fire 4. Maybe if I played it when I was a kid I'd like it still. But on the other hand, I played chrono trigger when I was 28 and liked it.

Some of the bosses later on can put up a fight but random encounters are always easy.
