Have you ever hated a game only to end up loving it once you tried replaying it?

Have you ever hated a game only to end up loving it once you tried replaying it?

Yes, World of Warcraft

Dead Space 1.

I bought it and it sat around in my steam library in 2009 for like a year. I didn't exactly hate it but I only got past the first necro and decided that I couldn't handle this shit for another 8 hours.

Eventually I played it again, not sure why, and when I pushed past the intro I fell in love with it. It's like a modern Ratchet and Clank in the sense that the highlight of the game isn't even the horror, it's all those different cool weapons. And then I went on to go NG+++++++++++ (or however often I replayed it). It's probably one of the most replayed games besides Demon's Souls for me. At some point I basically just played it to relax from homework and listen to podcasts in the background, it's a pretty comfy game.

Monster Hunter Tri
I really hated it starting off I mainly played PC shooters and shit around that time and I never had anyone to play with. I was pressured into retrying the game by some friends and started to understand how the gear and progression worked and I fucking loved that game afterwards.

I got New Vegas a couple of years ago, played the intro and I thought I'd get bored of it quickly like I did with Oblivion and Fallout 3, so I quit playing it to save some time. I went back to it a couple of months ago cause I had nothing else to play, shit was fantastic and I really want to get the DLCs at some point, I just don't have the time or the money to do it now.

Kula World (Roll Away in the US)

I have 215 hours in it and I never actually finished the game

Stealth games get better after you beat them once.

Debate me. You know it's true.

Not exactly. When the new DOOM came out I played the demo and thought the game was one of the shittiest games I've ever played. Once the game got down to $20 I tried it again and after the demo levels I found the rest of the game to be great. I have no idea why they lead with the worst part of the game. So I guess that's kind of a similar story.

Dishonored. Not till the 4th attempt to play it that I actually enjoyed it.

...

Not really, I've experienced the opposite of that quite a few times though.

Nah, Thief 1+2 were definitely MUCH better the first time through when everything was new.

FFXII

second playthrough I just self inserted as Balthier and the game became 5x more interesting.

FFXII became so much more fun to play when I realized I didn't care about the story, just go out, hunt shit and look for espers, that was all I cared about.

Probably the original example but God Hand.

X-COM, Thief, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Silent Hill
To be clear these are games that I tried like two levels of when i was first getting into gaming, couldn't figure out, and then quit like a baby. After actually giving them time I loved them all.

I think the biggest difference was when i stopped playing 20 games at once and committed to either finishing only one game at a time, or dropping it if i really enjoying it. Gave me a much better appreciation of many games that are more of a slow burn

Wind Waker. I couldn't stand it at first because I didn't like the artstyle, specifically the cel shading. I got past it and ended up enjoying it for the gameplay and music. I actually like Wind Waker HD A LOT more than the GameCube Version because the lighting looks way better to me.

Dragon Age: Origins.

It took me a second go at it to shake off the cut content, like spell combinations and such that made it sound like it'd be more like what DivOS turned out to be. The writing and the generic fantasy setting put me off initially, but I warmed up to it and saw that it was generic shit given interesting twists, like the Fade.

Dumb Kananposter

No More Heroes

morrowind.

had it on xbox as a kid and hated it since i found it too slow and boring, i think i got to some town, killed a random npc, and quit when i got dunked by guards and promptly went back to playing halo 2 for the billionth time

now its in my top 3 favorite games and i still play the shit out of it

Yes, I do this over and over again with games I hate. I force myself to like them. Having no money blows chunks.

Dark Souls 1, but I'm sure that's a pretty common experience.
Started it, made it to Firelink, got my shit pushed in learning how to parry skeletons, quit for 6 months. Easily 1000 hours into the series at this point, platinumed all 3 and just finished an SL1 NG+ run in DaS1.
