Yeah, Quake is anything but large-scale. The maps in general are even smaller than Doom's due to higher interconnectivity and verticality instead of sprawling mazes of key-hunting.

Doom and quake were revolutionary for their time, but nowadays doom is just a decent old school fps and quake is... a brown and ugly polygonal mess.

doom isn't even good, it's lame, primitive, the map design is honestly shit (wide horizontal levels with key stamp collecting), and if you think it's good you need to go back to /vr/ and play more lame mods
quake 1 on the other hand is and always will be the greatest multiplayer fps ever made, it's so elite that it is still dominated by the same swedish autists, the game takes an insane amount of skill whereas doom multiplayer is honestly comical

Nigga, for its time, doom was fucking groundbreaking and incredible. Even to this day, it's STILL a fun game, even if it's not as impressive as it once was. It has a variety of enemies with different attack styles, lots of neat weapons with specific uses (instead of 12 different assault rifles that work the same way), colourful visuals, good music, and lots of neat shit.The fact that it still has an active modding community to this day speaks volumes of its quality. I have much more fun playing Doom than most modern shooters.
Now, if you were talking about Wolfenstein 3d, you may have had a point. That game was hardly ever good.
Am I, though? A lot of Doom 2's levels were very focused on style over gameplay, Freedoom 2 found a way to merge both of those in a solid blend. It's earlier versions had some really, really fucking weird, and really, really fucking shitty levels, but outside of that I think it's become a solid project with great levels and gameplay.

The game is pretty inferior in design in comparison to Doom and Quake, which isn't a bad thing necessarily speaking -- there's nothing wrong with liking it and having fun with it. The people touting it as some big, amazing game on the same level as other shooters like Blood, Duke, Quake, ROTT, and so on are overrating the fuck out of it.

It flopped because it was released between two of the biggest games of the year, CoD and Battlefield, not because of its artstyle.
The clean geometrical style is because it's a building block map (artificial battleground constructed for training,) a lot of the game is grittier. The post processing is because it's a trailer scene.

Okay, you're wrong. It doesn't reward skill, is a bloated piece of shit that runs on stolen code, and every niche it tries (and fails) to cover has been done completely better by many other mods.
Extreme lethality? Hideous Destructor.
Fast gameplay? Demonsteele, Project MSX.
Powerful, loud weapons? Russian Overkill, Guncaster.
Weapon variety and flexible player tactics? DoomRPG + RL Arsenal.
If you want gore, you have things like Nashgore, and HDoomGuy is working on a gore mod, which will probably work with mods that don't replace monsters.
Brutal Doom is popular for dipping it's fingers in every bowl at once, without actually bringing anything else to the table. Many other mods do what Brutal Doom does and do it way better -- see Project Brutality.

QL's gameplay tweaks change up play a good amount as well as the major netcode improvements. Double jumps/stair jumps bring it closer to Quake 2 in terms of movement which makes traversing around maps much easier as well as nerfed LG and RG.

I would describe them instead as dynamic and they kind of just got fazed out in favour of more tailored/gated experiences which kind of started with half life with simple triggers and scripting and went completely off the rails in the 7th gen.
some new ones trying to revive the old design are Dusk, Ion maiden (dunno when this is coming out) and Overload which is successor to descent (there have been a couple of impostors but this one is legit)
