I still say that Disc One of Xenogears is the greatest jRPG ever created.

Disc Two is the worst.

xenogears hd remaster (not REMAKE) for pc and ps4 when? with a completed 2nd disc!

if that releases im an hero-ing the moment im done with it.

Disc 2 really isn't as terrible as people put it out to be. It turns it more into a visual novel unfortunately, still the same meat and bones underneath.

Never, Takahashi is owned by Nintendo now and hates most of the other publishers he worked with.

in all likelihood we will never see a re-release of any kind for Xenogears; it was divisive back then, and would likely remain so today. the full HD treatment is something we might get if fans decided to remake it, but it'd get C&D'd to hell and back.

Disc Two is jarringly different in terms of pacing and gameplay (what little there is) from the first. The quality of the story never, ever diminishes, but taking such a grand title and reducing it to storyboards and boss-fights, and a grueling end-game dungeon that's "random" battles every dozen steps? That's just unforgivable.

>Second disc completed
Nigger, that content alone would at least span for another 3 discs. Do you remember how much shit happens in disc 2?

>the disc 2 is bad meme

we all know it isn't perfect, but disk 2 is totally serviceable as it wraps up the story and features one of the more interesting and exciting turn-based final boss battles in history. Beating zeus without using a guide or cheese equipment was epic af and made me rock-hard hard after since the rest of my party died and fei was the only one left standing with 1k health left. Believe me there have been much worse JRPGs made than disk 2 of xenogears

>worse than disk 2 of xenogears

okay so the entirety of Granstream Saga doesn't even count

Will Nintendo ever let Takahashi get as ambitious as before?

>the only game Takahashi ever finished is Xenoblade Chronicles

How do Xenosaga fags feel about it ?

pretty fucking bad desu, Xenosaga was also damned good.

XS1 had fuckoff long cutscenes but the story being told was top tier

XS2 had ugly character models and a shit battle system, but was acceptable

XS3 is a beautiful blend of everything that made the first two good, and desu I'd suggest people skip the first two and go right to the third. Those delicious easter eggs/homages to XenoGears were just icing on the cake.

Nintendo itself doesn't get as ambitious as SNES Nintendo era anymore.

He's already ambitious in pushing their outdated hardware to its limit. It just seems like after Xenosaga didn't fly over all that well for various reasons he'd rather abstain from making some really fucking weird shit again, though. Nintendo's got Doom and SMT headlining for their system, I doubt they'd get pissy about a not-Evangelion sort of thing.

The Treehouse being personally involved in development, on the other hand, would be your real problem.

it hurts

Xenogears has way too much damn text and cut scenes and they should have just made it a visual novel rather than a book with a few game sequences.

I acknowledge your bad opinion but must insist you drown yourself in the nearest creek, river, or bathtub at your earliest convenience.

The game is scattered few and far between and it isn't enjoyable because the "game" often doesn't allow you to play it, often liking to trap the player in the town from progressing until hitting up most if not all NPC's in town among other things.

It isn't a good game. Say what ever you want about the story but games should allow the player more control in actually being capable of playing it. This is just ignoring the second disk.

>it isn't a good game.

I will fuck you hatefully in an alleyway until you see the light

dude that's gay

I enjoyed disc 2 as a visual novel.
The plot improved dramatically around the second disc and the world really expanded.

See, you cannot refute what I say because you know it is true of this "game" that should have been a visual novel. It is a massive drag and I haven't experienced a JRPG since that kills the pacing this hard with refusing to let the player play the damn game. I want to explore, not get trapped in a town like a mouse in a maze.

I tried Xenogears and couldn't get more than half a dozen or so hours into it. The game had little if anything appealing in it. If disc two is so much worse than disc one, than I cannot even imagine how bad the second disc must be.

Xenogears would honestly be improved if the whole thing was remade as a 60+ visual novel, full stop.

*60+ hour

All things considered this was a really well made music box.

never played a xenogear/blade/saga game. What was wrong with disc 2?

imagine evangelion ran out of budget episode 12 instead of episode 25

>Takahashi was unironically shocked when Nintendo just told him to take as much time as needed to make his games good rather than pressuring deadlines

Poor guy's just had a really rough time over the years.

Jesus Christ how horrifying.

It goes from a JRPG where you experience things first hand to a VN with boss fights where characters sitting in chairs tell you what happened in-between boss fights.

Basically what happened was they ran through 3/4 of their budget making the first disc which was maybe 1/3rd of the story, the higher ups at Square told takahashi to just use the remainder of the budget to polish up the game they already made, but takahashi thought the game would be better if it were story complete.

Actually wasn't it that Square really wanted Final Fantasy VIII made at that time, and they took most of the game's staff to that project combined with them running their budget into the ground?

Yup, that too. Basically what you mentioned happened, and Square told Takahashi to make do with whatever scraps he had left.

No almost all of that is bullshit.

Final Fantasy VII was the game most of the Xenogears staff was moved to during crunch, but they came back to Xenogears after that period. This had no direct effect on the budget but Takahashi said that the team while working on Final Fantasy VII did get used to working on an effectively unlimited budget and then going back to Xenogears was difficult. But this also gave his team of mostly rookies good work experience since for most of them this was their first 3D game.

VIII had absolutely no impact on Xenogears what so ever. The budgetary issues were a result of this being Takahashi's first time in the director's chair, biting off more than he could chew and not being able to pull off his vision of the project with the money, time and staff allotted to him.

Disc 2 is better than disc 1. It would have been better off as a VN the whole way through.
