>“The Nintendo device (Switch) is a hybrid device and that’s a different approach and strategy. We have not seen that as being a huge market opportunity. The Vita experience was that outside of Japan and Asia, there was not a huge demand. The lifestyle shift toward the dominance of smartphones as the single key device that is always with you, was the determining factor. That draws me to the conclusion that they’ve really been additive to the business in the last year or so. The folks at Nintendo have their strategy and that’s great. We remain focused around a highly connected gaming experience and also coupled with having a great range of other entertainment experiences so you can reach multiple people on the big screen in the household.”

>Vita bombed and we are salty as fuck with all the mistakes we made
>One year later
>Introducing the totally original and unique Sony Playstation Swap, the first most powerful hybrid console
This, essentially. You can kinda' tell that Sony are doing everything in their power remedy the Vita fiasco. Even if that means attacking the competition.
>this passive aggressiveness
>Playstation Swap
Kek
...
>smartphones killed the vita
what a load of shit, lol. That 3ds also suffered horribly from smartph-oh wait.
All i kinda wish is that the switch was a successor to the 3ds while Nintendo actually making an at least tadly more powerful meant specifically as a home console as well.
Sony please release Vita 2
Always post source, bucko
it sold less than half of what the DS did
>mfw even people actualy working for sony are salty of the switch success
Ps3 sold half of PS2. You can stop posting anytime
And still managed to be a success
PS3 had to compete with the Wii and Xbox 360
the handheld market shrunk, objectively, because smartphone games meant people didn't buy a DS to play during breaks
>all i really ant is changing my console and library every 4yrs by having Nintendo to make completely new consoles which will have all the game developers stop making games for the old ones, obligating me to buy the new ones
lol no shut up, are you retarded? If anything closer to that, may they release new designs of the same console such as the DSx and the new 2DS. I dont want to throw my old consoles in a box of fhe forgotten vidya every 5 years.
This.
The fact that Nintendo have sold 70 million 3DS in the face of smartfones is fucking astonishing.
>PlayStation Swap
I wouldn't be suprised if that was the actual Fucking name
Basically covering their bases since they wont be making any more handhelds
I don't get this wojak. The 3DS and Switch basically shit on the Sony statement.
Has Sony ever innovated at all?
Be honest.
The fact that their shitty DVD player sits at the top of best selling consoles is a genuine stain on human civilization. They honestly deserve to go bankrupt for producing the largest amount of garbage in Hollywood.
The banana controller would have been great.
the revolution/psmove logo is blatant as fuck, how did they get away with that?
Can't blame them
Handhelds are a nintendo dominated market as far as the actual consoles go (not counting mobile)
If Sony did try to compete with the Switch with their own console, I feel like it'd just be another repeat of what's happened in so far.
They should just stick to what they do best, powerful home systems with byotiful games.
A hybrid system is a very Nintendo idea.
>"Hybrid system"
There is nothing hybrid about it. It's a handheld with a TV out. And not even the first one.
Honestly Sony was fucking stupid for making a hand held.
Nindendo appeals to audiences because of the simple multiplayer experiences like Pokemon.
Sony should have made the Vita a phone that people can buy that doubles as a handheld.
They didn't have much going for them from the start.
the state of wojak posters
collect them like i do
>a device you can play held in the hand is not a handheld
I like how they still can't admit it was Nintendo that drove them out, instead they still blame smartphones despite the fact 3DS was their main competition. The Vita didn't have any games so nobody bought the thing, simple as that. They should have named it PSP 2 and market the hell out of it and made games for it and it would have been successful. It's amazing they spent so much money on the Vita and they named it something nobody would recognize. A lot of people knew what the PSP was.
>I have not read it, but I must reply to it anyway
not as big as the ds
>It didn't work when we tried, so we honestly don't know what Nintendo thinks they're doing.
It wasn't even the games. It was the ridiculous mandatory sony memory cards. like... what in the actual fuck were they thinking?
nah your wording was just a little vague so I misunderstood
Funny is, VITA had all the requirement to beat 3DS
but it was released during Arrogant Sony phase
They're not wrong. What do you think would happen if Sony made their own version of the Switch?
There's simply not enough room in the handheld market for multiple competitors anymore. Mobile has sucked all the oxygen out of the room and there's no point in trying to compete with Nintendo right now.
people would have swallowed that pill so easily if the system had any killer apps
>The fact that their shitty DVD player sits at the top of best selling consoles is a genuine stain on human civilization.
SEETHING
what do you think it needed?
I find these kinds of infographs remarkable because they make me wonder what the person who makes them is like.
>they still can't admit it was Nintendo that drove them out
Because that would legitimize both Nintendo as a rival that bested them as well as recognizing that their failure on the handheld front was from their own incompetence.
Basically Sony is strawmanning the fuck out like their fanboys do on a regular basis.
more than Soul Sacrifice Delta and Gravity Rush
>What do you think would happen if Sony made their own version of the Switch?
If this means making a handheld while keeping PS5 as console, it means it will flop, badly
It this mean Sony dropping console like Nintendo and going dual market, it means 3rd party will kill emselves causethat means 2/3 of the market will be hybrid and that will force em to go gameplay over graphics and support Sony AND Nintendo
Remember that Sony has never actually been all that successful in the gaming industry. They were always about buying success by throwing massive amounts of money around, to the point where it took them 17 years in the industry to have even a single more profitable year than Nintendo.
>what do you think it needed?
that 3DS never recovered from teh shit fest it was on release
I mean, look a PS4 it got all the ground cause Microsfot was to slow to accept the fiasco XBONE was on release
>Sony should have made the Vita a phone that people can buy that doubles as a handheld.
They already did that dummy.
I'd say it's less nintendo driving them out and more being giant jew cunts with the memory cards. The Vita when it was new + a decent sized memory card was a big investment for a handheld. They could have just used microsd instead but nope! $100 for 64 gigs! No big install base means less devs want to get onto the platform. Ends up getting branded as a niche product and basically abandoned. The Vita gets titles announced for 2018 in spite of Sony's awful management of the system. I hope the Switch does well and just absorbs the Vita base.
How can you think that Sony is going to release their version of the Switch?
I mean, they did their Wii-move thing because the Wii sold insanely well. So far, the Switch has been successful, but nowhere near Wii levels, it doesn't justify Sony entering that market. For now.
>that 2009
I wonder how mad Nintendo's BoD are that theyll never produce another anomaly device like the wii.
>that Wii/DS era profits
fucking insane. no wonder they got cocky with the Wii U. and this is coming from someone who actually enjoys the Wii U.
>gameplay over graphics
Generally speaking the end result of this approach is lots of games with both bad gameplay and bad graphics. It's not like there's a scale with gameplay on one side and graphics on the other, and the developer has to decide which one to put all their talent on.
Well it's not a good, long lasting thing. Someone from Sony said something smart? Are you sure?
I hate Nintendo and Sony. Ron Swanson said it best, never halfass two things only whole ass one thing.
This hybrid shit has got to go. You either settle on a console for the home, or you go handheld/mobile. I'm convinced the only reason now that nintendo is doing this shit is so they can have excuses to not make an actual system that has any kinda power at all behind it.
With how small later iterations of consoles can get I wouldn't be surprised if Sony or MicroShit make their next "Slim" version of their console just a really small housing with a screen on it and still an HDMI out like pic related but even smaller and very much like the Switch.
Yes, im fucking seething at the fact I had to buy three of the fucking things within a fucking year because the hardware was fucking garbage.
Yes, im fucking seething at the fact that everyone likes to blame Nintendo for starting the gimmick bullshit even tho the PS2 decided fuck being a video game console and instead be a multimedia device and a fucking dvd player.
Yes, im fucking seething at the fact it killed Sega and the Dreamcast (A vastly superior console and without all the shitty 3rd party ports and lack of genuine shovleware that could rival the Wii)
butthurt
It's mostly left over Vita regret fueling this sort of talk, maybe a bit of the typical console warring. Then those feelings latch on to any sort of vague sign, like those patents. And a lack of knowledge about how handheld tech has to work, with bizarre ideas about Sony making a competitively priced handhled that can play PS4 games and won't require a giant fucking battery. Though that level of shitposting, at least, has died down somewhat.
Couldn't be more fucking wrong, lol. PSN subscriptions and Japanese insurance are the only thing keeping them afloat when their movies are Ghostbusters and Amazing Spiderman 2 and the only headphones people buy are Beats. Read a fucking financial support some time homeowner.
>Another butthurt Segacuck
You and Ron Swanson are dumbasses then.
>food became portable.
>tech became portable.
>cars can now be assembled and disassembled by 1 person for portability
>chairs, tables, phones are portable
>GAME CONSOLES CAN'T BE PORTABLE, RON SWANSON SAID SO
>It's not like there's a scale with gameplay on one side and graphics on the other
not literally, no, but developers often have to sacrifice gameplay mechanics in favor of great graphical fidelity, e.g. pre-baked animations that look good at a sacrifice of control responsiveness (pretty basic example but you get the idea). Also, a lot of western developers focus on the story/setting first, and build the gameplay around it - the result is a lot of games that are mechanically similar, even to the point of feeling the same to actually play, the only differences being superfluous. Japanese developers, such as Nintendo, focus instead on gameplay mechanics and literally don't even consider the story until last minute.
Picked up on that did you?
You must be really smart huh.
>Segacuck
lol no just someone who has the displeasure of falling for the PS2 meme
desu, you can't really blame the ps2 as much as you can blame Sega higher ups for being gigantic bakas.
>gaijin market is better than ours, better kill it and our American head because we're bitter japs
>hmm, should we have a normal lanuch?
>nah let's rush it out, hike up the price and fuck over all our launch titles wwwwwwwwwwwwww
>Japanese developers, such as Nintendo, focus instead on gameplay mechanics and literally don't even consider the story until last minute.
Yeah that's why they pioneered the visual novel genre you colossal retard.
>Japanese developers, such as Nintendo, focus instead on gameplay mechanics and literally don't even consider the story until last minute.
what are JRPGs
VNs and eroge are their own solitary niches m8.
It's not like they halfassed a portable either. They whole assed a portable, then marketed it as a home console you can maybe take with you on the go if you feel like it because it can run the next big Nintendo franchise games and can sort of run the new Doom because its engine was built on fucking magic. The portable downsides are it's the biggest portable so far and the big games will drain the battery more. But it's getting those handheld level games anyway, and that shit certainly isn't draining the battery any more than the 3DS's were. Not perfect, but it's by no means half assed.
The higherups at Sega make the Dreamcast story all the more depressing.
>not literally, no, but developers often have to sacrifice gameplay mechanics in favor of great graphical fidelity, e.g. pre-baked animations that look good at a sacrifice of control responsiveness (pretty basic example but you get the idea).
Usually it's the reverse. Pre-baked animations are usually more responsive while the alternatives (such as inverse kinematics) are more sluggish and less responsive.
>lso, a lot of western developers focus on the story/setting first, and build the gameplay around it - the result is a lot of games that are mechanically similar, even to the point of feeling the same to actually play, the only differences being superfluous.
You just described the entire JRPG genre. And guess who makes most of those? Japan. And they're usually designed around low specs, which is what you are advocating.
>Japanese developers, such as Nintendo, focus instead on gameplay mechanics and literally don't even consider the story until last minute.
Which is why you are still rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser 30 years later. Nintendo doesn't even like to do new IPs if they can shoehorn a new game idea into the Super Mario Bros. mold.
The Vita was a phone? Why wasn't I aware of this?
They must really be bad at marketing.
It's why hardware companies in vidya should all be private.
Investors and a board fucking kill everything.
It's not like it's a bad idea to slap Mario on a new gameplay mechanic desu
I can't imagine the Mario and Luigi series selling as well as it has without the brand, and Mario is better than Miis on their sports titles
I like to pretend JRPGs aren't a thing since the vast majority are utter shit. At very least, they are an outlier to what I said.
>sony finally realizing they can't just copy quirky hardware and piggyback off its success because it was the games that sold the hardware
progress
now for nintendo to realize that the wii only won because they didn't keep the gamecube's corpse afloat for two years and actually put mainline games on their new system with any sense of urgency
it was called xperia play at the time
think they stole the idea from the highly successful ngage
>At very least, they are an outlier
lol
Why does no one notice that the 3DS is considerably more expensive than the DS was? The DS was $150 on launch. They barely released a similarly priced N2DSXL two monhts ago. Only the original 2DS was really priced competitively and many peolpe didn't want it because it's gimped by not being able to close.
>every JRPG is final fantasty
JRPGs and visual novels are basically the two biggest genres in Japan. The market is absolutely saturated with them. They are not the outlier-- they are the genres that Japanese video game fans like, even though by the rest of the world's standards most of those games are not good enough to merit translating them.
PSN subs happened after 2012 nimrod, we're talking about how long it took them to even match Nintendo's profits in a single year. Even with a old dying handheld and a fresh new baby console Nintendo came within 8% of the Playstation division's profits last quarter.
Sony has big numbers, but they have a very hard time translating those into actual profit.
It looks like shit, no one uses flip phones anymore.
I should have had a PlayStation d pad with a mic in the center and the xsot buttions with the speaker in the middle.
Touch screen, Android, and Google play store available.
And it will either:
1) weight 10 pounds, or
2) require to be plugged into ac all the timw
I wouldn't know as I don't live in japan sorry
Nintendo's internal studios aren't making anything for the 3DS
the closest there's been this year is the Kirby team releasing a couple full-sized minigames from Robobot, everything else has been outsourced or was already a 3rd party game
They're run by stuffy retarded buisnessmen
>Vita never gets a killer app
>Loses most of their support from Capcom and Square who carried the PSP
>Key early software like Gravity Rush, Unharted and CoD fail to meet expectations
>Massively overpriced memory cards
>Memory cards required to boot up games
>One set of sholder buttons and no L3/R3
>Fans were under the impression it would be running PS2 games, not just the few shitty ports it got
>Library unquestionably peaked FIVE (5) years ago with P4G, an enhanced port, never to be approached
"MOBILES DID IT" - Sony
Isn't part of the reason for that because JRPGs and visual novels tend to be some of the cheapest games to make and thus don't require huge sales to make back the money spent?
Generally speaking you only see the best Japanese games and not the mountain of shit that is not good enough to get any kind of Western release or promotion. That means that from your perspective, Japanese games are on average better than non-Japanese games. Japan is no more immune to sturgeon's law than anywhere else.
This is a lie.
Sont said most families are a 2 console house and thag it's usually a PlayStation and Nintendo device.
>"When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family," Sony global game development boss Shawn
Layden told Time. "And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side."
usgamer.net
They aren't trying to be a console, consoles try to innovate. They're just generic PCs with their operating system on it.
A Sony Switch would have flopped because no muh nostalgia factor.
Here's a more complete timeline:
>N gage
>Highly Successful
>what in the actual fuck were they thinking?
That a billion of you assholes where pirating games left and right?
>because no muh nostalgia factor.
>Crash
>Bubsy
>Uncharted
>TLOU
>Persona
all of those would work well on a sony swap
does this mean japs get the best of western games?
What would be the best of the west anyway?
They're still in that phase though.
"Nintendo caught us with our pants down, but we can't admit it, so we'll try to dismiss it as a non-issue."
Sony can't risk making a switch device because then normies will just say fuck that and get the Xbone
All of Bethesda's games get Japanese releases.
No, look at high end gaming laptops right now. You can get a laptop with an i7 and gtx 1070. It is easily feasible for the specs of a PS4 to fit into something the size of the Switch, it would just be expensive.
