Why does this game still feel miles ahead of every other third-person shooter out there?

Why does this game still feel miles ahead of every other third-person shooter out there?

It has more soul. Actual thought put into the core design. And it still kinda is a true, oldschool survival-horror at its heart, which means more responsibility on the player himself, which leads to more interaction and immersion.

It doesn't. Play MGS4. I say this as a person that prefers RE4 too.

It has that perfect balance of japanese and western influences in harmony

play Max Payne 2-

It's perfect honestly. RE4 had a mixture of grittyness and gore with a light hearted, almost sarcastic, undertone that just blended so well. And the gameplay was both rewarding and challenging on so many levels.

I can't really elaborate on it because the only word that comes to mind when I think of RE4 is "perfection".

Because it doesn't stray so far away from classic RE that it just becomes generic action shlock, like RE5 and RE6 did. Retroactively, it's being grouped alongside those games by people who haven't played it recently enough to realize that it's much slower-paced and much more methodical, and it's a damn shame its reputation is being tarnished by those abominations. Having to use the inventory screen to switch out weapons slows down the pace of combat, bringing a tactical element into the experience similar to classic RE. They still go for tight corridors and cramped locations by and large, unlike 5 and 6, which featured much more open locations. The entire game is beatable with handgun/shotgun only–you're not forced to use a machine gun like in 5 and 6. The enemies put pressure on you and create tension and panic, but don't overwhelm you so quickly that it becomes obvious the intended way to play was to mow everything down with a machine gun. The overall atmosphere, tone, and setting of the game still emphasizes horror, unlike 5's retarded broad daylight setting. The browns and sepias are RE colors. 4 was definitely more action-oriented than previous games, but it still felt like RE, and the combination of RE + TPS beats generic TPS.

That said, REmake is still the best game.

I feel dead space 1 and 2 almost on par with it

Because you played it when you were a kid. I'd rather play Vanquish or Max Payne over it. TPS isn't a very good genre in general, not much solid competition.

>I feel dead space 1 and 2 almost on par with it

You can't actually believe this. I feel like the Dead Space series could turned out to be so much more than it did, but it was always missing something.

What was it missing?

>Because you played it when you were a kid
Not everyone is still in high school you know? I didn't play RE4 until I was 20 and I still think it's one of the best games ever made.

Not him, but the level design felt pretty bland.

>Fun
>Subtlety in the horror
>A good plot
>decent gameplay

There's other stuff, but to me Dead space just feels like senseless gore not horror.

Deadspace's level designs always felt too cramp for the way the combat plays out if that makes any sense.

...

brilliant pacing and a proper sense of progression through the environments

Meh

Because RPG elements, other TPS usually don't have them and it's just mindless shooting. Also stop and shoot is probably another reason since it makes it feel more in control and precise for the player.

>good pacing
>story and writing that is silly and goofy but interesting enough for you to care about it
>good map design with a lot of treasures that reward exploration with better guns
>god tier atmosphere
>crunchy as fuck gunplay with really satisfying hit reactions (shooting something in the face with the shotgun or kicking a ganado's head off is mint)
>had amazing graphics for its time (still holds up well)
>diablo inventory

RE4 is the only game where I never get tired of replaying it. I've replayed it at least once every year or two since it came out and I'm still enjoying it

This, entirely. Based user.
