Soldier of Fortune 2 was my first shooter, I think. All the gore and stuff. Me and my dad used to play it together. I particularly remember how a grenade could turn glass windows into shrapnel that hurt enemies and was visible on their bodies.

Remember when we all deeply cared about game engines in fps games? Quake, 3drealms, Monolith, Unreal etc.. I miss that, now everything seems to look almost the same even though running on different engines, back then the difference was huge.

Halo CE & Halo 2, UT2k3 & 2k4 and F.E.A.R. + expansions were the only fps that mattered in that era.

Prove me wrong

Fuck, I loved Painkiller. Shit was cash.

Also this SoF1 and 2 were pretty dope as well.

Timesplitters series

Quake3 may be running at 2000 fps, and older games

Why exclude Halo 3? Also Metro 2033 (2010 release)

I remember Unreal Engine 3 being mentioned a lot ~2008, it was the shit back then. Still looks good today. And Doom 3 in 2004 having the most mind-blowing graphics of that era ("check that photo-realism gaiz!"), then Crysis becoming the new Doom 3 with CryEngine.

But yeah most realistic games looks good enough and similar. Even smaller indie games that don't use popular engines have their graphics on point. Progress isn't so palpable anymore

Is Painkiller any good? What game should I start with first?

painkiller black, everything else is kinda meh. also have fun getting it to run on anything above windows xp

at first I thought this was going to be a thread for video game with two thousand frames per second

painkiller black like the other user said.
do not, I REPEAT DO NOT, get the painkiller remake. it is much worse (less maps, enemies are even more stupid (that's a feat, since enemies just run at you and shoot...), and other flaws I didn't even bother checking. black is just better, except in grafix.

Well it does say "PC"

I miss the days of licensed Quake 3 engine games. I'm talking about Jedi Knight, Star Trek Elite Force, shit like that. I

Everything's shit nowadays

I can't look at this model and not think about the room anymore.

REMINDER THAT URBAN CHAOS RIOT RESPONSE IS THE BEST GAME EVER

Half-life 2 is still the best game in that series more than 10 years later.

I played the shit out of the Darkness on 360. That was pretty weird.

That is a genuinely great game trapped on old hardware. It's a shame it'll never reach the audience it should.

I need to replay this.

Any of you glorious Gaylords play Black?
Iirc it was a console only fps, had rad fmv cutscene and intense as fuck gun graphics.
Had the prison shower level from the rock in it before cod did.
Come to think of it, modern warfare actually ripped if off pretty hard.

God, MDE is so badass. I wish I was Sam Hyde.

>mfw playing FEAR

>all enemies are human
>shooting feels soooo right
>those enemy screams while in slow motion

Pure bliss.

Don't mind me, just posting the best console FPS ever made

Also xbox farcry
Black
Halo1
Cod3

...

slowdown made you feel too OP though, I couldn't stand it, in the best of cases it did little to change up the gunplay, game was only worth it for shitting bricks at the scares.

you just had to make me angry OP

I really love the period, this vibe is nowhere to be found anymore, every game mentioned in thread is fun for some reason, every one of them had that "something" that made it unique

I remember the enemies being bullet sponges. I also remember it not living up to the hype.

so, I am a pussy. I dont like horror movies and games. I really want to try FEAR for I have heard that it excels at enemy AI. How many NOPEs would I get if I try it?
Example: I tried playing Amnesia, I deleted it without getting to actual enemies (I saw a hallucination of an enemy and that's when I noped). Another example: I deleted Dead Space when the no gravity levels were introduced and enemies were fucking flying towards me

No one needs 2000 fps, your eye can't even tell the difference above 30fps

FEAR telegraphs it way in advance when something spooky is going to happen. The game gives you audio and visual clues, plus you can see the level design change. Just brace yourself when it's about to happen.

The original is by far the best. The first expansion is ok-ish. The second expansion kind of sucks. It just gets worse from there. The final game is an unmitigated disaster.

What's your opinion on the first Far Cry? It blew me away back in 2004 and I would still play it any day

There is nothing remotely scary about F.E.A.R. The horror elements are a joke. Why the game is praised for anything other than its gameplay is beyond me.

I've started playing Crysis for the first time and it's dull as shit. I thought it was considered one of the best.

Painkiller is my second favourite FPS after original DOOM. Which is why I love DOOM 4 so much, with it being basically those two games mashed together.

Half-Life 2, Battlefield 1942, CoD 4.

F.E.A.R and UT2k3/4 were all good games, but also completely irrelevant, and had virtually no influence on games that came afterwards.

Who even remembers UT and FEAR?

It was mostly a grafix thing, + the pedigree that Farcry gave to Crytek.

Farcry is legitimately a masterpiece, but I fear going back and playing it now would suffer pretty badly from the "Seinfeld is unfunny" effect. It was the absolute template for large, open, freeform FPS games though.

It was very technically impressive for it's time. The A.I. seemed unfair a lot of times, though. The human enemies could always snipe you through a mile of foliage. The mutants were terrible. It's probably the hardest game I've ever played.

Crysis is worth playing for the midgame. It's boring early on.
Elevate the difficulty if the game's not stimulating enough.

Anyone who played PC games in the early 2000s

Shame it never came to PC as I damn well know I will never dig out my 360 from the garage storage bin to replay it.

Great game based on an average comic. Sequel was decent as well.

>those fucking ironsights
Freaking 5 degree FOV.

I think there was some patch that messed up the AI allowing them to see you thru walls and such
I liked the mutants, especially the invisible ones

I don't think I had any problems, like, at all, running it on Win8.1
GOG version though, might have something to do with it...

Such a great game.
It was basically all gunplay, effects and great level locations.

So good, someone should've done more with the changing soldiers on the fly concept.

Are you scared of the dark?
Really, the only thing that made me nervous in F.E.A.R were all of the dark sections in the office building.
I don't remember any enemies hiding in the darkness either.

the weapons are awful

Best Battlefield desu.

Only other game I know of with that concept is Clive Barkers Jericho; also had a neat explanation why too.

AHEM

>Meme sam
>dead platform
lmao kiddo

Remember when CS:Source was one of the best first person shooters before the franchise became case opening simulator ? Preety good times.

>being obnoxious
>posting call of duty with tanks

UT 2k4 was the shit, man.
until it fucking broke and i couldn't uninstall it or do anything to the folder it was in.

good times.

>Steam fucking NEVER

The game existed long before cod4 you retarded nigger.
Also
>Posting a literal frankenstein of stolen designs and ideas
Fuck outta here.

I am playing on Delta

They're alright. The problem I had with Prey was that it didn't do enough with the anti-gravity and portal mechanic and focused on the spirit walking which was just lame.

>long before the 10th game in the series
you are funny kiddo. i am actually referring to cod 2 which also utilized classes in the same form

BF2MC still came out before CoD 2, dumbass.
Also, Battlefield 1942 came out in 2002 and th series already had classes since it's creation.
Back to the shortbus with you.

The first two Brothers in Arms games are interesting because of the squad/suppression and combined arms mechanics but the actual shooting is some of the worst I've ever experienced.

The third game improves the shooting, added new fireteams and destructible cover. They completely ruined the combined arms aspect by making the tanks their own boring vehicle level like so many other shooters.

>tfw you walk into this room

Serious Sam is ironically the GOAT. Nothing comes close to standing up to the gun design, level design, and bants. The HD remaster is alright too.

the next encounter is an entirely different game, like quake 2 64 or doom 64

widow maker confirmed to be stolen design

I didn't enjoy TNE as much as TFE and TSE, but it's still good. Overall I'll it's a fucking fantastic series.

Remember that time when Croteam shit on Duke Nukem Forever?

What's the best current way to play the original Halo campaign on PC? Is it this SPv3 thing?

i dont know myself, i used the original executable not too long ago which worked fine at high resolution. i recommend checking this out
reddit.com/r/halospv3/comments/6aoxu0/halo_ce_mouse_tool_released_fine_tune_your_mouse/
because while i never used this i hate the mouse acceleration in halo and this could remove it
