I like how John's specialty was playing Smash, which has nothing to do with finishing a game quickly. And he still kicked someone's ass who is supposed to be the best speedrunner in the world, at completing a game faster than someone else.
I still enjoy watching speedrunning, but it just further proves that it's nothing but relentless practice that only gets you good at one thing.
By playing competitive games, John actually has better reaction time and is better at reacting to different situations. For example, that Mario Maker level that neither one of them played.
All Cosmo and most speedrunners are good at is just memorizing what to do for something you've already done roughly the exact same way hundreds of times. That's all speedrunning is, just about memory. Of course you're going to get better at doing the same thing a hundred time, but it's about the worst "skilled gaming" thing you can do as far as improving your ability to play games overall.

I'm no speedrunner, but it is apparent as to why they do it: optimize a system. Gaming itself is just a series of (mostly) closed systems interacting with each other. Yeah its autismal, but civilization was built on the backs of similar autism.
