The purple toad at the bottom is replacing the White Mage magikoopa from the original game, not that doctor toad above it.
The rest is just a cherrypicked image of a single area where the unique toad designs are simplified. Unfortunate for sure, but not representative of the whole game.

You more than likely will enjoy it, it's the same game but with a couple design changes & prettier graphics. The biggest changes are the combat being more like the newer games but even then that's barely different from the older games. I don't feel it adds enough to make it worth $40 though personally.

Not all Toads are red-dotted, there are variants of them in different colored dots, but they're still pretty streamlined and generalized.

That's probably also why they had to change the white mage koopa. Just to avoid copyright issues.

They got Geno's likeliness in Smash. Why couldn't they do the same for this game?

I dunno, they were pretty humpty-dumpty with Square Enix back then, there were collaborations left and right, but something clearly happened with them as of lately. It's especially odd, because they just did this Mii outfit of Geno and of course, the whole Cloud thing being in Smash 4 thing.

Unless Square Enix downright refused to give further use of him in the game or Nintendo felt it was just a "flavor of the month" cameo that doesn't either feel as special or would probably confuse a lot of new players and maybe that's why they removed it, which makes more sense in this case.
