I honestly find atmosphere and world building details more important than how much shit NPCs say.

The world of Link to the Past and Diablo 1 feel more real to me than many RPGs. The NPCs didn't say too much, but the music, colors, and design all just conveyed a story of its own so well.

Oh yes that is true. Big deal for the time in particular too. Oblivion was bragging about that like a decade later despite doing a shit job of it.

But 90% of my time in Diablo was spent deep in a spooky dungeon. Voice dialogue was a strong point but it wasn't gobbed at you. They gave you details and a nice framework and then let you go check things out. I like that.

Contrast say something like Mass Effect I'm always thinking shut the fuck up and let me go to outer space you dumb NPC. I'm just not interested in them and they never shut up.

STALKER is probably another good example in the line of Diablo. Most of it spent wandering, but you run across a chatty NPC now and then and pick up hints of world here and there as you go. I think that is a good way to do it.

Really the question is how do we fix fantasy writers? The standard for what constitutes acceptable writing has drastically fallen, so of course authors with a modicum of merit are becoming harder to find and likely wouldn't be stupid enough to write for a video game in this day and age. Too many mediocre fantasy writers are obsessed with trying to write the next Harry Potter or Song of Ice and Fire, and these are the people who think they have a shot at popularity through the medium of video games.
