I doubt it'll be the big E3 smash reveal. That'll go to someone like Ridley / Wonder Red / K Rool / Fucking goku / Shovel Knight / Snake who lots of Smash fans want, but I can definitely see Travis being the first direct announcement, or the end of E3 announcement.

Literally the first game Suda51 has solo directed since NMH, and before that was Killer 7, both being masterpieces in terms of both conceptual design and writing, as well as gameplay mechanics (but not gameplay really).

Reminder. If the character you're posting is not the MAIN character of the game, no, they are not guaranteed. Smash bros has not had a side character added unless the main character is already present. This for example is why I think the next Smash bros may have shulk again if Rex isn't very liked, because while Pyra will probably be loved by fans, unless Rex is in she can't make it in too.

As far as guaranteed characters, I can honestly see any of the following have over a 30% chance of making it in
(yes I'm serious because fucking Cloud proved you don't even need to be available on a Nintendo platform)

While the following characters would be decent for smash
They are side characters, and the only instance of a main character AND side character being added in the same game I can even THINK of attributing is Marth + Roy in Melee, but even then both are main characters of their own game despite Marth being the face of the series.

Remove Palutena, Bowser Jr, Robin, Duck Hunt (he was the meme add of Smash 4 like Pichu), Greninja (will inevitably be replaced by the most popular generation 8 starter), Wii Fit Trainer (that era has ended), Dark Pit (he was literally a 3-4 day addition because Sakurai wanted to promote his game), Lucina (will be replaced by Lyn because Nintendo realizes she's just as popular and is just as waifu baity), Pac-Man (because he just isn't popular anymore), and Mii (because it's no longer required nor relevant).
The dlc characters that will return are:
Ryu (because muh USF2 plus he's just a classic at this point)
Bayonetta (because Bayo 3 will be out before Smash 5, and it'll be switch exclusive most likely)
Corin (this is iffy, but I'd bet on it because they don't know how popular FE 2018 will be, while Fates was ridiculously popular.
Roy (fan favorite)
Mewtwo (fan favorite)

Lucas and Cloud are up in the air. I'd say Lucas is totally up to Sakurai. If FF7:RE makes it to switch, Cloud's spot is safe. If it doesn't, it'll be replaced by Terra if FF6 gets a switch remake, or the most popular of the 8 Octopath Travler main characters (in pixel art for creativeness).

Nigga you went full retard. Cloud, Fire Emblem reps, and Greninja are the only ones in actual danger of getting cut. Maybe the Capcom reps if Capcom continues to sell out to Sony. No way in hell are Duck Hunt, Wii Fit Trainer, Jr., Miis, or Palutena getting cut. Robin probably has the best chances of staying of the FE reps because of the fully unique gimmick and that both genders of the character are popular. People hate Male Corrin, and tolerate Female because she's hot. Dark Pit has the best chance of the clones to make it because Sakurai made KI Uprising and he can be easily decloned with using other weapons in the Uprising arsenal. Plus Pit has a ton of multi hit moves, which can be turned into single hits for easy modifications like melee Falco. Pac-Man isn't going anywhere. He is still an icon of the industry that Bandai-Namco has been whoring out everywhere. Not to mention they are the ones who developed the game with Sakurai as the director.

But they make the game with a deadline. Nintendo isn't nearly as strict as most publishers, since their deadlines are usually something like "x to 1.5 years from x" instead of "x to 3 months from x" but they still have deadlines. Axing unpopular characters to make space and TIME for new characters is one of the main reasons wolf isn't in Smash 4. You might add that they clearly would have had the time at this point, but at this point ALL of the developers for Smash 4 are pointed towars either Smash 5 or some other Sakurai directed game like KIU. Characters previously in Smash are 80-90% likely to be in the next game, but the really unpopular characters (exception being to Mario / Luigi / Peach because of where they stand Nintendo wise) can get axed for the possibility of a new character being added that surpassed their popularity. Think of Ice Climbers, Roy, Wolf, Pichu, Lucas and Young Link (though you could make the argument toon link plays similarly enough)
Smash bros has NEVER been a series of saying "fuck off" to the characters or series in it that do not gain enough popularity. Even Star Fox, one of the core series which oiginates from Australis does not do necessarily anything to offend others. So thus, it's the perfect candidate for Star Fox, and Wolf is the perfect sacrifice to popularity
