Should I play the first one before this...

Should I play the first one before this? I'm not even sure if I can finish this type of game because I'll be scared shitless whenever I play horror game. (Outlast, Alien Isolation, Resident Evil VII)

For me SH 1 is too outdated.
I just played SH 2 and its the best horror game ever.

bump

2 is a standalone, so play it whenever.
> 1 is outdated

Only if you care about graphics.

Get out

>Should I play the first one before this?
Yes. Seriously

>For me SH 1 is too outdated.
How the fuck can you even play SH2 then?? It plays EXACTLY like SH1! It's practically like an expansion pack / rehash. Literally released mere 2 years after 1!

>Should I play the first one before this?
Hell yes! It's essential + one of the best games, ever.

>(Outlast, Alien Isolation, Resident Evil VII)
ah, you've only played jumpscare trash. Lucky for you, SH is nothing like those! They're actually SCARY.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW widescreen fixes mentioned in guide, the sh2proxy's EXE works as no-cd crack too.

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
You can now see fine emulator settings for SH1 in the guide. You may also try the newer PGXP emulator for wobble-free PS1 graphics.

>I just played SH 2 and its the best horror game ever.
How the fuck can you claim such things, if you've never even played the original? Hypocritical graphics whores are the worst.

>Outlast, Alien Isolation, Resident Evil VII
If you think those are scary you're gonna have a fun time with this franchise.

>walk home late
>completely empty and dark street
> youtube.com/watch?v=ufi1swQqX4I starts playing in mp3 player
>legs start to move faster on their own

You should play SH games in the release order.

>Outlast, Alien Isolation, Resident Evil VII
>"horror game"
bruh

I liked number 3~!

SH2 is intended to be played after 1, there are nods to the first and your perception of the series will be screwed up if you think 2 sets the tone.

SH2 is a masterpiece but so is 1 and 3, all equally so for different reasons.

Playing SH1 is not necessary. Great game but it really piles on the dread with the gorgeous ugly, nasty visual design and oppressive sound/music. It really makes you not want to play it, and I mean that in a good way.

SH2 is similar but a bit softened around the edges. The ambiguous nature of the world it presents is much easier to handle but no less terrifying. And the mystery of it will drive you forward along with the great characters and creature designs.

This.
Playing #2 first tends to turn people into what I call "nuSH2 fags"; making wild speculations of what's going on, missing the point hard, sometimes even becomign huge HATERS of the rest of the series because of their own delusions.

I'm like you and can't play Alien: Isolation and RE7 but I played through Silent Hill 2 just fine. Currently playing 3 and holy shit I love these games

Also 1 & 2's stories are not linked but there are mentions and such

Don't listen to faglords here.
You will be perfectly fine by playing SH2 first.

>Also 1 & 2's stories are not linked
but 1 & 3 are.
Not to mention it's wise to play the games in release order so the jumps in graphics and controls don't hit you so hard. Not that any of them would have bad art-directing or that different gameplay.

while this is true, I try not be the kind of asshole that acts like liking SH2 the best makes you a fake fan or whatever.

No matter how you cut it, SH2 is a masterpiece, just like the other two.
But it is best to play them sequentially (like almost all media from every franchise).

Also SH1 has aged very well, just don't emulate it at 1080p in ePSXe or it will obviously look ugly as fuck.
I use Mednafen but to simplify it let's just say that the dirty, sharp graphics contributes to the aesthetic and lets your imagination fill in the details, cleaning up the image ruins that.

>I use Mednafen but to simplify it let's just say that the dirty, sharp graphics contributes to the aesthetic
you don't need to suffer of Mednafuck to achieve those. Just switch to Software renderer on ANY emulator out there.

I like the RA mednafen core but I tried to keep my recommendation open ended.

Also that polygon twitching thing has been addressed by some emulators recently, don't know if it would improve SH1 much though.

hiiiii!!!

it would. SH1 has been used as THE example game for it, for a long while.

PCSX-R's PGXP build was the very first emu to implement GTE Accuracy hack + perspective correction, and it looks great in motion.

2 is my favourite in the series, let's just get that bias out of the way. But I wouldn't go into this game expecting to shit my pants, it's not as oppressive in atmosphere compared to the first and third game. I recommend you play the first three games in order, but for no better reason that I'm just a stickler for release order.

well honestly, how often has the question "which order should I play X in?" been met with "not in release order"?

There's hardly any times where that's the case, mainly just when movies cover huge arcs of a show.

Gangbang Heather!

Cult bullshit is the gayest unscariest part of Silent Hill and 2 made it work because it was set in the background of the story instead of being front and center. Played apart from 1 its in the background and infinitely more intimidating because of it. Played after 1 its still scarier because of the disconnect for aforementioned reasons.
The callbacks are unimportant honestly. Just cute easter eggs. Like how 4 havin the serial killer mentioned in 2 as the main antagonist really adds nothing but a weak link to call the game silent hill.
I like 1, 3, and 4 for what they do but as a stand-alone piece SH2 is perfect and utilizes the setting amazingly.
3 always seemed silly to me because of the cult being front and center but i recognize it being personal taste.
>its not as oppressive in atmosphere
I honestly cant get what you're getting at.
They all seem equally dark in atmosphere. But ill admit i havent played them in years so its kinda blurred together.

Considering only 3 games of the series are actually good who can blame them?

1>3>2

>cult bullshit is the unscariest part of silent hill
>sh2 is the least scary game of entire fucking genre
sh2 fags sure aren't delusional

...

First one is WAAAAY scarier than second one. During the day it is fucking scary, but when night falls it just becoming ten times scary.
Second one do not have this fell.

I played first one one Vulkan with widescreen patch, no wobly textures of PS1, and scanlines and other effects from crt tv, and it was glorious. But to set it up perfectly you need to spend some time.

I guess I meant that I find 2 to be less terrifying than 1 and 3, personally.

How did you find the right settings?

SH1 is one of THE greatest horror games ever created. it's at least on par with the REmake.

>what is Google?
use PCSX-R PGXP

I used Retroarch Core. Do not remember the name.

Well, it's sure as hell a lot better at the horror part.

Hey, for those who want to play SH2 on the steam link, made this in photoshop really quick for the custom image

There's either Mednafen (autistically accurate but pretty good)
Or PCSX-R (runs way easier on low power devices)
Both of those RA cores should support PGXP, I think you need to run Mednafen in hardware mode though which is still early in development.

Jesus christ

>When you're not allowed to design for Silent Hill any more so you spend your free time drawing porn of famous characters

Ito is a treasure

Whoa, what the fuck that's awesome

Based Masahiro

Is "Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece" a meme or the truth?

Truth
That doesn't mean SH1 isn't a masterpiece though

Is team silent a group of geniuses or did they just get lucky 3 (4) times

there are no truths in the world except atma and brahman

The first 3 silent hill games are all masterpieces. Silent hill 2 is just a bit overrated because its the first one that most people play.

Serious question, what makes them so great? I'm curious. The story, music and enemy designs are all superb from what I've seen. Anything else that seals it them as masterpieces?

Controls are great, graphics are superb, and sound design is genius
I still haven't heard the whisper at SH2

Is that supposed to be armbit hair next to her boobs?

Hate this meme that these games aren't scary and theyre "walking simulators"

They are scary, they have tension and atmosphere, they aren't carbon copies of silent hill, which is fine, theyre a different kind of horror. Not slating Silent Hill since I adore the franchise, but it doesn't make the other games any less scary (though the new Resi wasn't as bad as outlast or alien)

SH2 being the least scary doesn't mean SH1 and 3 were scary because of the cult. The cult was always kind of bullshit and definitely does better being pushed more into the background. SH1 and 3 were scarier than 2 because they went for a different, much more explicitly graphical angle than 2 did, but that can be done whether the cult is there or not. In other words, the cult only serves as exposition as to why things are happening, but an unsightly scene of a monster being hanged from barbed wire is fucked up whether there's an explanation for it or not.
