Both sides are heaps of garbage with some hidden gems.
Typically the biggest flaw in RPGs is the lack of creativity.
In the west you tend to have generic fantasy settings with the same old CRPG system (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, though uncreative)
And in the east you have high school kids fighting god with the power of friendship featuring the same, tired old turn-based combat with barely interactivity or depth.
But like I said, there are some hidden gems.

The problem with WRPGs is that western devs as a whole simply don't know how to make games actually fun to play.

I have NEVER seen a western game where you actually care about hitboxes, frame data, precise control inputs with possibility of even making intricate exploits. There's just nothing. It's always the exact same old Press X To Awesome on top of extremely fucking shitty animations and scripted everything.

I also find it laughable how things like Witcher 3 with the zero meaningful agency over the story is considered an RPG when most WRPG fans deny that JRPGs could even be considered RPGs. All you need to have your game considered an RPG in the west is shiny graphics and a generic sword in a generic medieval setting.

That all lead to the exact same place and nothing truly changes ever. Take Witcher 3 for example. No matter what you choose, you always end up in the same places facing the same enemies. The only meaningful differences are extremely minor and don't account for over 95% of the actual adventure. People put the baron quest in a pedestal for example but regardless of your choises, the land will still end up pillaged and everyone raped. Your choise in this game is downright an illusion, but hey, shiny gwaphix = insta 10/10 for your average modern gamer that is actually just a person that doesn't really like games but isn't smart enough for proper books. WRPGs now more than ever, with select few exceptions, are just glorified books for retards. I am not against huge stories and vast lore in games. In fact, I love them. But you either give me agency over it or you can stick it where the sun doesn't shine along with your pretentious excuse of a movie masquerading as a game.

The real origin of rpgs is Wizardry, not Ultima. It was the game that directly inspired rpgs like Dragon Quest or Phantasy Star the most, and ironically the west gave little shit about the series while it was really popular in Japan and even had multiple Japanese sequels, and other media.

Saying that series like gothic or pre3 TW is anything more than just decent is exeggerating. Out of that list I would only call Deus Ex really great but calling that an rpg is still a far stretch.
