Or maybe it's just that people have already seen this type of game before and don't understand the perfect reviews and comments about how it's a masterpiece. Super Mario Odyssey could only ever be consider a masterpiece by someone completely new to video games. It doesn't have nearly the same impact as 64 and to pretend that it does is a fucking lie. It's still an excellent game though, and anything lower than an 8 is contrarian (which is probably the score I'd give it).

Ok can I be honest for a second here? Mario looks fucking boring. There's no real goal except completionism, and with over 500 stars and a reported lack of difficulty from every single reviewer so far, this sounds just as bad if not WORSE than all of the collectathon-ing from past Ubisoft titles. It's actually probably more appropriately comparable to korok seeds in BotW. Again, why are you all so sure this game is good? You're talking about a bunch of journalistic hacks that spent their college years sitting in a drum circle complaining about capitalism having to fall back on gaming to salvage what little bit of education they slogged through. The only high scores are coming from aggregate reviewers like IGN and Gamespot. And they like it so much because of how colorful, low effort, and non-offensive it is.

It's not meant to be challenging from a design standpoint though. I think that's why there's over 500 stars. It's more about experiencing the environments and mechanics (ie. Cappy). Personally I don't see myself putting more than 10-15 hours into it, but for people who love the aesthetics and children, that's a great deal of content that'll keep them hooked, which is a good thing.
