I'm probably late to the party, but just heard the news.
tl;dr: EA has sent C&D notes to the BF2 revival project's team, and are now forcing shut down on all activities and download links related to it. Up until now, BF2 (and 2142, which was included there) were playable for FREE via fan-servers.
So, did anyone manage to snatch the required files and instructions while they were still up ?
>Even if you did buy our game, you're not allowed to play it any more because we're done with it. >What, you could rent and host your own servers? We don't care. Stop playing it.
Aaron Diaz
>Corporation makes effort to increase sales god i wish there was something better than capitalism
Aiden Garcia
any response from the userbase yet?
Landon Miller
Luckily nuBF will never have this problem since nobody wants to play them after 12 months, let alone 12 years.
Kevin Morris
The only option left is to rewrite those games in open source.
David Scott
Unlikely, this isn't the first time they sent C&D for their older games, guessing people stopped caring.
Blake Walker
>any response from the userbase yet? Big, solid "FUCK YOU!", from what I've seen. I've been avoiding EA trash for over a decade now, but this really is an all time low. It pains me that I just yesterday saw some YT video of people playing on 64 player fan servers, and now that shit's apparently a no no oce again.
Eli Brooks
>increase sales There are no sales to increase nigga, the games are litrrally not playable without Revival
Jayden Perry
I hope this serves as a final lesson to EA PC fanboys that EA is scum and one should never purchase their titles for the foreseeable future. ALL HAIL PIRACY.
Hunter Jenkins
What exactly does this mean? Someone was hosting servers to play an older game online that wasn't available to play anymore? Were they pirating the game or something, or just helping people keep it alive by having their own online servers?
Joseph Green
BF2 and up relied on the Gamespy service to host servers.
Gamespy wend under years ago, killing BF2 and 2142. Fans made their own "service" that would replicate and replace GameSpy, and allow people to play BF2 for free.
Jaxson Martinez
He means they want people to stop playing old games and buy the newer ones
Charles Taylor
Basically the former.
Isaac Powell
EA knows their audience are sheep. They'll all be buying Lootbox Star Wars and giving them their money even if they did the mean ol' thing.
Adrian Scott
Yea, the problem with this situation having no backlash from fans is that nu-battlefield players just don't care, being retarded cucks or 12-year olds that buy shit like BF1 in the first place.
Grayson Hill
EA is just shitty, that's all there is to it.
Lucas Smith
So, can I host my own servers, on my own PC, or not ?
I find it a bit odd that up until mid-00s, hosting dedicated servers on your own machine was practically a norm, but nowadays it's like some long lost magic.
Eli Nguyen
Thats like if ID forced people to stop playing quake 1 online to increase sales of quake 3.
The biggest issue for EA is that their old games are basically a market substitute for their new games, since they are basically the same games with the same gameplay only updated with a handful of updates and making use of newer hardware/engines.
each quake game on the other hand attempted to introduce novel experiences and diverse content, so they didnt have this fear of older games reducing sales of newer titles.
Pathetic that EA cant make their new games different enough and better enough to be secure with the thought that players of the older games will buy the newer games as well and demand that customers stop having fun online with their purchased content
Caleb Gomez
I heard they didn't actually demand they stop working on it, merely that they cease using their trademarks for stuff.
Is that true?
Luke Clark
Yes typically when companies don't actually have any legal leg to stand on they just send it frightening letters and hope you do what they want.
Kayden Green
This is really nothing but yet another manifestation of the over decade-old jewish AAA business practices and appealing to rampart casuals. Devs and publishers realized, that they can make a ton more profit just by re-selling people the exact same game they've already purchased once, be it practically or literally. Longevity, replay-value, or good heavens, archiving games for later generations, don't even cross their minds these days.
Here's the entire message. It may seem friendly and quite fair at first, but in layman's terms, they're literally saying that if EA considers ANYTHING in the project to utilize their property, they can sue the shit out of anyone.
James Jones
Ea really should have won that golden turd award a third and fourth year in a row. It's one thing to fuck people out of money, it's another thing to fuck people out of money and simultaneously destroy an art form.
Thomas Gray
Battlefield 2 fanboy here. I haven't bought an EA game since Battlefield 3, fuck those lying snakes.
Brayden Ward
Sup Forums will continue supporting EA enjoy your divegrass
Ayden James
>games >art top kekking & lmao! this is prolly how EA bosses think
Grayson Rogers
>battlefield heroes private servers bitched out fucking REEEE it wasn't the best game but it was still fun and i Remember being in the betas
Just make your own BF2 with that same team, I don't really see the problem desu because then you also have all the source.
Levi Rivera
>It may seem friendly and quite fair at first, but in layman's terms, they're literally saying that if EA considers ANYTHING in the project to utilize their property, they can sue the shit out of anyone.
It's hard to say. Since it's not actually in legalse they are giving specific conditions, but going purely off that, it does only really say that the issue is the game clients and information that makes them look official. If they could distribute the stuff needed to get the servers to work or whatever without including the game itself in the downloads, and just not advertise their stuff at all, then that would comply with that.
Landon Ortiz
EA shilling and jewery IS a form of art.
Levi Hughes
Why didn't they just release a patching system that people could apply to their own copies of the games instead of distributing the game itself?
Leo Hall
>Imagine if a car company sent a C&D to car sellers or private seller for selling older models when they make a new model Fucking hell what a shitty company
Tyler Martin
what is all this about? the servers are still up, they just dont give out the game for free anymore
Brandon Walker
Why is it every time I hear about EA they come off like a money grubbing shit company? In my head I picture a bunch of suit and ties surrounded by lawyers.
Matthew Scott
>It may seem friendly and quite fair at first, but in layman's terms, they're literally saying that if EA considers ANYTHING in the project to utilize their property, they can sue the shit out of anyone.
that seems friendly and fair.
why are they giving away the game for free? and why are they trying to look like an official battlefield site?
Anthony Young
or just create a patch...
Nicholas Gonzalez
Because there's no reason to report on the good shit the company does, at least on Sup Forums.
This is a dick move, through and through. Especially since they have given official approval to many similar projects in the past like Battleforge revive, or the entire network of modern C&C server platforms as the Gamespy shutdown killed those as well.
Julian Moore
From what I can gather, the servers should still be up, but you just can't download the game client(s). I'm not sure if they had their own client that was modded to work with their servers, but in the case that they didn't, all you need is a copy of the game. The only thing the site can't do is have any official logos, artwork, or names (which is what really kills it). At least, provided that the Battlefield 2 name is still trademarked - I didn't bother looking through the pages upon pages of trademarks that EA has.
>why are they giving away the game for free? Because you can't buy it anymore, and physical copies are hard to come by.
>why are they trying to look like an official battlefield site? They likely weren't attempting to, but due to using the Battlefield logo and artwork (for obvious reasons - most people will recognize it if they're fans), it became like that.
Sebastian Ramirez
Unless I'm misunderstanding what Revive is doing, I fail to see how EA is in the wrong here. Of course a company is pissed that somebody is giving out their games for free. I guess Revive could just host the servers and claim that they are only playable with a valid CD key or something like that, but that would just lead to the same shit that happened (or is still happening iirc) with AlterIWNet. >create dedicated servers for CoD MW2 and also later titles >could be played using a special pirated version that also included all the DLCs >also just adding a few files enabled you to play singleplayer >Activision tells them to fuck off and they do >people ofc rehost the files and servers >they periodically get taken down >each new client just divides the remaining players more and more, provided they even find them The last time I checked there were two clients, both with some ultra retarded addons and mandatory registration, with like 300 combined players.
>"We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer."
Connor Garcia
You can't get Battlefield 2 or Battlefield 2148 legally anymore. It's impossible to play the games outside of pirating it.
Lincoln Evans
Oh well that sucks. Though I still think EA is in the right, it's their shit so they should get the final say. You better hope Revive somehow reaches some kind of deal with EA then. Because if it goes the AlterIWNet route, soon you'll have to find some shitty ass obscure forum that is only on page 3 of Google search, register for it, download a horrible client and register for it and only then you'll be able to play. Except there are like 100 total players and for some reason you can use weapons from Battlefield 1 (the new one) in it.
Connor Young
>take intellectual property that belongs to someone else >modify it how you like >redistribute it >get surprised when the owner of the intellectual property tells you to stop How this is a surprise and how anyone can say EA is in the wrong in this scenario is fucking beyond me. Should EA maybe look into keeping official servers alive? Sure. But they legally can't allow a third party to redistribute their intellectual property willy-nilly.
Landon Myers
I kinda figured that out when they shut down the servers to an ONLINE ONLY game I used to own. They can't make money off of people playing old games, obviously. Why does this surprise you? Are you some kinda retard?
Joseph Morris
>Hi, I'm a faggot that doesn't know the difference between capitalism and corporatism. I wanna look cool and hip and progressive, so I'm just gonna bash on capitalism because I'm an ignorant parasite
Angel Hill
they could just agree to let BF2/142 selling again and use this opportunity to make off money from old fans instead of just shutting everything down. the people that are playing BF2 and BF2142 aren't the same people who will buy the new Battlefield or Battlefront and lootboxes.
Angel Moore
They could, but you know they won't. You strike me as the kind of person who wants legacy servers on WoW, but doesn't understand why blizzard won't do it.
Christian Moore
Because that's exactly what EA is.
Elijah Thomas
I was an another user but i didn't played either BF2 or "legacy" wow at their times. Did (at least EA) fear so much on their old titles as actual competitive game? There are still shitloads of players on BF4, BF1, Battlefront, do they raelly think that they would jump on BF2's train and stay there? I personally don't think so
Parker Peterson
They don't fear anything It's about maximizing sales and getting people in a routine of buying, nothing more
As far as they are concerned by spending 2 minutes to send a letter telling people to stop they can potentially get more money for almost no effort
Samuel Ramirez
Just started playing BF4 and it's surprisingly fun. Maybe it's because I got to it late so all the servers have locked down on snipers and OP shit and all the retards have moved on to the newer shiny games but I'm surprised.
Holy fuck that singleplayer shows how dark the industry got though. The worst thing I've played in recent memory just dead inside.
Isaac Davis
Then ea is scum.
Matthew Campbell
if pirate servers are realling cutting into their revenue then... why can't they make their own servers and sell the games again? this way they will start making money again
Chase Reyes
First of all, they are just defending their own IP. They can do whatever they want with it. And secondly, who knows how many people would actually buy the games. It's probably not worth it. Just because people play a pirated version doesn't mean they will buy it. Hell, I played AlterIWNet and whatever the MW3 version was called for like two years and loved it, but I never bought a CoD game. Maybe if they jewed out and implement loot boxes, but that will just get them a shitshow and additional costs.
Michael Brooks
Because they want people to buy the new games.
New is better, goy!
Jack Gray
Of course it would be right, but let's say I ask for someone to help me organize a party, you come at my house bringing food you cooked on your own while I did not give a shit and just went out, then in the midst of everyone enjoying the thing I come home and kick you out.
Is my house, my right, but that does not make me a gigantic asshole.
