Which is the best exploration-based platformer of 2017?

Definitely not The Mummy.

>Hollow Knight is better at Metroid than Metroid

It just had a bigger map, and it wasn't even better designed. The combat was also pretty lackluster.

I'd like the Mummy a lot more if the game didn't treat me like a fucking drooling retard and spell things out and explicitly explain things to me like I'm an idiot? Why even fucking make a Metroidvania if you're just going to fucking tell me where to go anyway?!

It's not like it would make any difference, the maps are pretty linear.

HK is the best metroid of last 5-10 years, even more so after content patches.

Is it? I thought Axiom Verge was better.

Axiom Verge feels worse in virtually all regards, especially bosses and map layout.
Fuck, just compare the last HK boss with AV's.

>Gameplay and Collectables
SR
>Exploration and atmosphere
Hollow Knight
>Mummy
Have not played it, so can hardly judge.

>inb4 people say Hollow Knight has better gameplay
Hollow Knight is challenging as fuck. and control are tight, but they are so basic is hard to fuck that up, the amazing 360 Aiming in SR hit me really hard, pretty dam cool feature.

This seems about right. The only thing holding SR back was that it stuck to the progression pattern of Metroid II, so it was more linear.

Steamworld Dig 2 should get added to the image. I'd say Hollow Knight is the best though.

I honestly thought Hollow Knight was pretty standard for a Metroidvania.

Is Hollow Knight at least worth $10?

HK offers an excellent customization via charms and forces you to use your entire arsenal including magic.
On top of that, it has the best healing formula i've seen in games in a while.

>exploration-based platformer

What are you, fucking retarded and gay? What kind of term is that, you faggot? Just say Metroidvania. These games aren't even remotely platformers.

Hollow Knight at least doesn't treat you like you've never played a Metroid game before

How does SR do that?

I've worked on SR and prefer HK, so there is that

I'm sure it's worth at least that much. probably better bang for youir buck than the typical AAA blockbuster turd.

HK is overrated. the combat is extremely limited and never really gets more involved despite there being tons of it. because the mechanics are limited so is a lot of the enemy design. the mobility sucks ass. you move way too slow before you find the "the speed the game should've been the whole time given the size of the screens" upgrade but you always have floaty ass jumps and a lack of any satisfying mobility upgrades. Because the combat isn't really satisfying and you dont have much mobility, all the enemies this game throws at you feel more like annoying speedbumps instead of some kind of interesting challenge or obstacle to get past. Lastly the itemization in general sucks ass. too many of the things you collect are extremely minor or rather situational charms and there's a general lack of stuff to find too, making exploration feel unrewarding outside of "I can finally find where to progress the plot". The whole point of a metroidvania is exploring a world. except because of the limited combat, the uninteresting mobility and the lack of rewards I don't really ~want~ to explore the world, especially since the game seems to think I give a shit about their story and world that's basically just demon souls but with bug people. It's not a TERRIBLE game, but I don't really see why I would want to play a game that basically universally does what metroidvanias are supposed to do well poorly (outside of looking pretty, anyway) when I could just play something like sotn, la mulana or valids story and play something that excells in one or more areas hollow knight flounders in

it has like over 20 unique bosses with nice patterns.
the sheer amount of content it has caught me offguard.
I just wish health amd magic extensions were more frequent, getting only subpar charms was sometimes dissapointing

I know user, I love HK to death, but in terms of pure feel, mobility, responsiveness and overall gameplay SR takes the spot, this is SUPER clear when you play the game on Hard Mode, fighting Digernout and OH FUCKING GOD RIDLEY in a higher difficulty than normal mode makes you see how fucking good the controllers are, because those fuckers kill you literally in 3-4 hits.

HK>SR>MR

Best map: Hollow Knight
Best Gameplay: Samus Returns
Best Items: Samus Returns
Best Presentation: Samus Returns

>Best Presentation: Samus Returns
Uuuhhh...

not that guy but HK's monochrome color use gets pretty boring sometimes

I bought Hollow Knight yesterday, it's my first metroidlike game and i'm constantly lost and spending unnecesary amounts of time trying to know where to go, am i missing something ?

No, that's how this games are.

>am i missing something ?
the whole point of playing a metroidvania

navigating the gameworld is the puzzle itself, make mental note of rooms that you can't reach but might be able to once you attain a certain ability, it's essentially just a puzzle

Try to make notes of what's stopping you from progressing somewhere
>oh, this ledge is too high
>this ground is crumbling but not much else here
>only way out is up?
>i can't jump that far
>i think i need wall slides for this place
So on and so on. The pieces together really fast if you just remember or note these kinds of places

Oh, i see now, i guess i'm too dumb, just tried to brute force it secuentially searching every possible way every time i enter a map, i'll try to take notes because i hate unnecessary backtracking.
