When does light armor get good? I've only beat the first mission and a few side missions. I got access to the bear killer, level 2 cyberlegs and a few other upgrades including stealth

I found them about the same (with a friend), with randoms, single is more enjoyable because the battlefield revolves around you, like in Crysis.
The point when the game truly starts to shine is when you have all the abilities and (very important) map them all to your keys (1,2,3,4,5,t,Lalt,g,f,h,tab, etc)
No other fps gives you that many direct abilities to deal with enemies.
But there are flaws, stealth is viable in campaign and in special missions (from the npc in the temple)
but I'm pretty sure that the enemies always know where you are in the side missions with random objectives
Also the only source game to have proper gunplay so there's that.
Don't forget to lean, you'll get used to it and do it really fast later on, it helps because you're much much harder to hit

Light armor never gets viable. However, you can become so powerful that you can wear light armor in defiance of reason.

Just max out legs and you'll be sanic even in heavy armor. You'll look cooler as well because light armor looks like ass.
