It has terrible physics, the bosses are boring and the level design is sub-standard, with Dimps trademark bottomless pits and instant death spikes everywhere.
Not to mention the shitty boosting mechanics instead of having to build and maintain momentum.
The trick system was great, it had an incredible soundtrack and I want to fuck Blaze but the gameplay never rises above "mediocre".

A series that some people have an issue with because you're moving fast with a limited view of what's up ahead is put on a handheld with a tiny screen and the character moves faster than ever before, and then they give you a boost button to instantly hit an even higher top speed. Then they fill the levels with things that constantly halt your momentum, like spikes, enemies that can't be killed by rolling, rooms that trap you until you clear them of enemies, and the most bullshit concentration of bottomless pits I've ever seen in a video game.
So no, definitely not best gameplay.
