I don't like JRPGs. I find them basically kind of dull. When I think of them, I think of contrived, non-interactive semi-cinematic story elements intercut with random combat encounters, introduced to relieve the tedium of traversing an otherwise empty, uninteresting landscape. I think of party-building and positioning for maximum efficiency in slow-paced, turn-based combat encounters that feel totally artificial and, for want of a better term, "gamey." I think of weapon and spell creation systems that take forever and require excruciating attention to detail on par with (and about as much fun as) doing your taxes. That's what I think of when I think about JRPGs (which isn't very often).

I agree. I was into JRPGs when I was a dumb kid who didn’t know any better and had infinite free time, but then I grew up. The handful of JRPGs I’ve tried since are just boring slogs with awful writing.
Nice blog post faggot.
You should submit that to gaming blog site. We need more writers like you.
But I don't even hate anime. I will have HAPA children and rise my HAPA son with a sense of camaraderie and spirit which will transcend racial identity. I will train him the way of the blade, and use bushido teaching in order to transcend Asian masculinity into Spiritual Divinity. He will have a full understanding of The Book of Five Rings, and master levels of Akido in order to counter balance his right leaning political views. I wont be selfish. I'll make sure he will be successful, I will make sure this new generation of happas will be able to break away from their white identity and transcend their east asian instincts of violent tendencies.
It will be the rise of a new era. The nirth of the new Übermensch. Supreme to the Aryan, with Levels of mathematics, art, and culture unseen since the great fall of the ancients.
This is a new future. Our future.
THE ARYAN-ASIAN ALLIANCE WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE.
Mark my words.
Okay? What's the point of this thread?
The fact that you just asked that is strange. What do you come to this website to see or do?
I agree.
I'm surprised no one's tried to take Pokemon's core combat and applied an "esport" skin over it. It's probably the only non card game 1v1 turn based system that works on a competitive level.
For discussion. OP just made a blog post
You're invited to discuss the opinion he expressed. If you have nothing to say, then fine. But don't blame him because you have no strong feelings about what he said.
I don't know if this is an epic copypasta, but
>"gamey" being used as a criticism of a video GAME
I wish more JRPGs were like EarthBound Undertale, Lisa, and Golf Story all apply, where the game is second to exploring a weird, whacky world. I can't tell you how easily I turn off a game whenever it features (unironically) shit about being the chosen one or some world-ending God or whatever. They are also full of some of the most embarrassing character designs in the medium, except for fighting games, except I'm not supposed to take fighting game characters seriously.
I'm sure such a game would immediately be considered a Pokemon clone. If anything, I'd be mildly interested in seeing Nintendo and Game Freak try to make Pokemon an eSport
>"Gamey" criticism
Kill yourself, blogposting faggot.
He could have made his post more of a discussion starter then a posting his blog on Sup Forums.
Not OP, but in a genre that prides itself on being a story-telling experience "gamey" would be an apt criticism
So? I dont give a fuck
It's already been "esports" for years with the VGC and adding and removing features to make competitive ready teams. All that would change is just the marketing.
And as for clone accusations, that hasn't stopped others from doing Hearthstone and MOBA clones and sometimes find decent success. A clone that only uses the gameplay but changes the progression and presentation would get away with it.
There's a bunch of material to discuss here. How tedious JRPGs are. How shallow they ar. How little choice matters in them. How uninspired their worlds are. He simply didn't word it in a way an incendiary way. He started and ended the post by relating it to his feelings. Making the opinions clearly subjective.
Are there jrpgs that aren't what op described?
All of them.
OP is just a braindead retard with ADHD.
The main thing that JRPGs need (specially the turn based ones) are more ways to build your characters.
I partly agree but I have the exact same feeling for WRPGs, except those lack even the interesting mosnter/world/character.
Real time action JRPGs on the other hand are the best genre.
aka a blogpost
JRPGs cover the whole spectrum.
If you hate Gunparade March, Etrian Odyssey, Soul Nomad, Tactics Ogre, Battle Network, and even something as simple as Pokemon, maybe you just don't like RPGs and the J has nothing to do with it.
7/10 bait tho
Okay, thanks for letting us know.
With few exceptions, JRPGs don't have actual role playing, you don't pick between roles, classes and so on, you're picking those pre-made characters and just level them up.
>few
More like nobody cares about the ones where you do. Japan is all about its Wiz clones. There's plenty of WRPGs where choice is stripped from you as well. The "genre" is basically just whether or not a game cribs some tabletop mechanics.
Crimson Shroud is a great compromise between J and W RPGS. It really needs a sequel that expands the scope.
The problem is that the term JRPG is so vague it's practically meaningless, it doesn't help define things. Final Fantasy VII and Dark Souls are both called JRPGs but they're absolutely nothing alike, other than being made in Japan and having levels.
