Here's the timer when I managed to calm myself to take a picture.....
Cooper Brown
Can you explain it to someone who's never played FF9?
Jeremiah Lewis
You have to reach just before the final boss on disc 4 within 12 hours. However if you do it on PAL it runs at 1/6th slower so theoretically you have to do it in 10 hours.
You will run through and do the same section many many times in a run to get a perfect run through, you have to beat bosses at a ridiculously low level (because you're running from every fight).
The specifics behind what you can do to save seconds is beyond belief e.g. Saving in certain areas because the screen loads quicker in one area than another or memorising exactly what you want to buy from shops and then doing it at a blistering speed....it's beyond a joke.
Many people do it via skipping the FMVs which saves a couple of hours I think, however I did it without.
Gabriel Jackson
that sounds like it is not fun, kind of dumb, and an extreme waste of time, for 1 fucking weapon
Cameron Gray
IT'S BEEN A YEAR?
Daniel Turner
Yeah, you don't even need the weapon. Steiner learns his best skill from another one that reliably deals 9999 damage.
On the PC version getting that weapon is tied to an achievement but it's a lot easier to do since the game runs much better and there are lots of new ways to save time.
Robert Wilson
It was a year as of yesterday.
I'll never forget the moment though :^)
Jason Torres
Holy fuck, OP. Well done.
Tyler Allen
Looking back I see it as incredibly rewarding and satisfying to achieve. I would never EVER attempt it again though.
It changed my entire behaviour in everyday life. That's no joke. Everything was done in a rush and a hurry, incredibly efficient in some ways.
Aiden Nelson
twitch tv / caracarnvi
Liam Cruz
I was there a year ago in the first thread......never forget user.....
PS aren't you the bloodborne 10 days user too??
Leo Watson
So this is a countdown timer from 24 hours?
Colton Foster
Actually 1 year and 2 days, found the original thread
Of course not. The reward is just being able to say that you did it.
Josiah Howard
how often did that thing proc anyways. I know axe spec was always pretty meh but the proc on that thing looked nasty
Joshua Fisher
> muh want my vidya to be as easy as collecting my govt checks omg i hate ppl like you. you will never understand what it's like 100%-ing a game, or working really hard to achieve something
Adrian Young
I did a few years ago a fast run halfway through of the game on PAL for fun without any practice or any resetting, end of disc 2 time was 8:52:00 so I stopped there because too slow. Was on PS2 with normal disc read speed (fast doesn't really work, maybe lens is dirty and never opened up any consoles before). Don't really care about Excalibur 2 though because you can overflow the timer and get it that way and I dislike going through the game fast without being able to enjoy it normally like reading dialogue etc and talking to npcs. Normal perfect game (like max items and stats etc) for me is way more interesting even though never done it but have watched an Ex 2 perfect game playthrough on youtube.
Oliver Jackson
ds2 did this to me with perseverance. i'm a better person after that game
Brandon Thomas
If by that you mean your sanity, your outlook on life and your ability to ever play the game for fun again, then no.
Incredibly rewarding nevertheless.
Ryder Wood
This
Connor Kelly
5% of the time, but more with ww/hamstring/ms instants
it doesnt break on damage or DR, though, so if it procs back to back on someone 4 times then it stuns them for 12 seconds straight
Ryder Jackson
My first run was similar, I ended up starting again entirely after having reached the lifa tree when I realised I was well behind schedule.
Going through it all again to just get to that point was soul destroying.
Mason Myers
you ever watch the ff9 speedruns?
Isaac Miller
Good job user. I've never done it, but FFIX is my favourite game.
Carson Harris
I'd be lying if I didn't say I have an itch to get an r13 warrior + aq40/naxx 2H when the classic WoW gets released. Was even thinking about Dark Edge last night
just the thought of the grind makes me sick to my stomach though
Jason Long
Their times are admirable but they do use glitches to get those times.
The crux to my challenge was doing it completely vanilla on PAL, zero glitches and do it within the time.
Brandon Ramirez
the grind was destroying my mental and physical health when i did it and my friends were bordering on confronting me over it like i had some sort of drug addiction
add to that the fact that i got temp banned 2 weeks before finishing, (where i was on par to be standing 1 my second last week, then the last week all the other premaders got banned for wintrading so it woulda been fucking easy as hell) which forced me to stop at r13. so not only did i almost kill myself but i didnt feel any sense of catharsis for spending like 4 months on the grind
id do it again in retail, though, it's impossible to play wow casually after you have experienced what its like to be pvp bis at any point
Chase Davis
>12 hours of work
So what?
Dominic Foster
I'm not aware of any FF9 glitches except the disc tray amv skips (which aren't allowed in those speedruns). Still though, putting yourself through that on pal version is pretty mental
Jayden Sanchez
> 12 hours
I fucking wish.
That was the overall end time. To get to that time I had to do the same sections over and over again, attempting to beat a boss or get through a certain enemy over the course of 10 hours repeating attempts from a previous save spot.
Christian Wood
did you do it on feenix? banning wintraders and other people for minor offenses really killed those servers
I did an r10 orc warr on feenix and got that ragnaros sword and that was enough for me
Andrew Parker
Ps2 double disc speed, running game on external HDD, turbo controller are a few other common ones.
If you watch most of these speed runs watch how the characters run across the world map, they almost skip, it's a glitch designed to avoid any random battles.
There are other smaller glitches and cheeses too that can be done on other platforms.
I'm not saying I've got the fastest time of all time ever, I'm sure there are others that will have done it quicker but I don't know if many who have done it without any glitches or fmv skip on PAL. Many sites online used to claim it was impossible.
Brandon Nelson
There is honestly absolutely no way whatsoever you could get 8.5 hours done without glitches.
Lincoln Cooper
nost. entire china premade got permad on what would have been my r14 week, so bracket 1 cap for that week was something ludicrously low like 400k AV. woulda finished on friday/saturday
Brandon Walker
Amusingly enough there is actually a way to roll over the timer back to the beginning and get the Excaliber 2 although it requires you having the game running for close to 20000 hours and close to 24000 hours on PAL which would require something like 2 1/2-3 years of leaving the game running. Wouldn't really call it a glitch though more of a programming limitation because of it being caused by the variable hitting it's maximum value and overflowing back to 0 and that kinda shit can be abused in almost every game especially older ones due to smaller variables being the norm.
Isaiah Cook
I don't think it'd be worth the electricity bill.
Also imagine you left it on for that long and you missed the (relatively small in comparison), 12 hour window to get the E2.
That'd be upsetting to say the least.
I'd like to think that has happened to one human being on this earth.
Owen Clark
>zero glitches and do it within the time. There really aren't any glitches that can be abused in speedruns anyway besides stutter stepping which completely prevents world map encounters. There's nothing major like Midgar skip in FF7.
Levi Davis
I guess PS2 faster disc speed would be the only thing they use, the best runners for that game use a regular controller and just do discs on ps2 without any external harddrive. I wasn't aware the world map stutter stepping was a glitch though, it's not even foolproof, it's just mashing the up arrow to only take half steps at a time because ff9 world encounters work on some threat level system and doing that fast stepping just keeps the threat level low
you can skim through the fastest run if you'd like go.twitch tv/videos/174946436
Dylan Cruz
Ps2 double disc speed makes a significant difference though. The entire game is running at a fast speed. As it is in running at 1/6th slower because on PAL, then if you add ps2 double disc speed it would make a huge difference to the time.
Lucas Flores
You can get it and not lose anything, you'll just have to do everything not missable right before the final battle...
James Fisher
There's honestly zero chance whatsoever of doing it in 8.5 hours without using some glitches.
I promise you
Zachary Edwards
>it's not even foolproof Yeah, and it's actually a reliable way to make the ragtime mouse appear.
Jayden Nguyen
I don't know what this "double disc speed" means. I do know that on average even with the ps2 faster disc speed thing a random encounter will still burn 40-45 seconds on average even if alls you're doing is fleeing. However long a random encounter takes to escape from on Pal is beyond me but I'm kind of having doubts that all loads times are 2x as fast
Brandon Harris
I was in the top 800 on the global leaderboard of Devil Daggers a couple of months ago, with about 345 seconds.
>tfw 500-second achievement never
Jonathan Allen
Touching on this, I did see 1 runner who played on ps1 only but using the NA version and was still beating the game in like 9 1/2 hours. Guess that translates to around 11 hours for pal?
Angel Brooks
Go watch a speedrun then there is hardly any besides the stutter stepping, you have no idea what your talking about.
Jaxon Ross
Getting the title "Master Alchemist" In FFXIV
Jace Morgan
I'm OP. I know exactly what I'm talking about.
Brandon Foster
Yeah about that, I accept I could have improved on my time. It was only my 3rd time playing the game through, I'm sure a dedicated speed runner could do it quicker ofc.
Is worth mentioning that it was widely regarded impossible to do on PAL without FMV skip, so an achievement all the same that I'm happy with :^)
Jeremiah Lee
>expecting someone autistic enough to do this challenge glitchless to know less than some random mongoloid who doesnt understand the intricacies of the game that just watches streamers
Robert Morris
I don't mean to shit on OP but the speedrun strats for ff9 are incredibly autistic and even with all the limitations OP endured, the game could still be cleared in under 11 hours with the speedrun strats
Jacob Flores
This!
Ryder Baker
Maybe....
Be interesting to see an actual PAL, PS1 no FMV, no turbo controller run live and see it achieved in under 11 hours.
I'm not saying my run was flawless, there were areas I may have been able to do cleaner, but shaving over an hour off under the above restrictions? I'd have to see it first hand to believe it.
Levi Evans
*no FMV skip
Also that stuttering run, is almost never done with a normal controller FYI
Oliver Morris
yes it is
There's a strict standard controller vs turbo controller shitfest that ff9 speedrunners bitch about and all the top runners just use regular controllers and turbo controller users get mocked or called cheaters. you can hear how loud and fast these fuckers mash their controllers the whole run to do that stutter stepping and text skipping in general
Mason Jones
>InFamous >350 blast shards >only a bronze
Still mad about that but fuck that took me ages
Remember my cousin was going for all pigeons in GTA4 and was missing one, we were driving one day and he spotted a pigeon on a lamp post and almost fucking killed us by slamming on the breaks
