I think it had to do with the reshoots.

Originally the Empire and Rebellion were a lot more grey, good and bad on both sides, and the whole thing was like "Vietnam in Space", a lot grittier.

Disney ordered "lighter" reshoots to follow the "theme" of Star Wars, which means they wanted it to be dumbed down to fit their made-up definition of what Star Wars is.
