It didn't
by paying reviewers and the sheeple just beleive whatever rng tells them because they identify with undertales progressive community together
It did?
Fantastic music, really charming characters designed really well, super hype boss fights (partially cuz music), cool 4th wall breaking mechanics, accessible, constantly changing gameplay while still retaining some element of skill, a really pleasant atmosphere, low system requirements, and cute/fuckable monsters.
I don't care, just post some fat goat tits.
>rng
Because it was a turn-based RPG, but you wouldn't take damage because it was the enemy's turn. You would take damage because you didn't dodge. It's like Battle Network, but instead of tiles, it's a lite shmup. It worked really well if you ask me.
meant to say IGN
It didn't
People are still shilling this game?
post goatmom
It wasn't.
Still disappointed we never got a full Hard Mode.
Would make my own game with this kind of dodging system, but It'd just be considered an Undertale ripoff, and I'd rather not have that.
Why is it that the only way to get people in your threads these days is to type stupid shit like this?
By spending lots of time expanding on its characters and their motivations and reasons for acting the way they do, by making a strong soundtrack full of catchy melodies and an excellent use of leitmotif, by making use of the element of surprise in its plot, and by combining a mish-mash of genres in a Valkyria Chronicles-esque manner that hadn't been done before.
Its such a bizarrely wonderful game, and while I want to remain hopeful, I worry that should Toby make another game, he won't be able to replicate the same degree of quality and strike gold a second time.
Furries
it had/has a pretty strong fanbase
Yeah, the entire game was basically Toby's baby. Guy's been working on the setting since his Homestuck days. Anything after the main plot is done would be a sequel for the sake of sequel in my opinion
I'd totally be down for some side-stories though
Post goat.
yeah sure... so great that people stopped talking about it half year later
But people are still talking about it.
It still gets threads fairly regularly.
Low expectations?
I didn't expect a game that looks like this to be as well designed and thought-out as it was.
I still think Toby should have redesigned the ruins when he got all that kickstarter money. The rest of the game looks way better
I haven't played it and never will.
Here's what someone else came up with while still keeping the general feel. A few simple changes really made the Ruins feel like Ruins
toby should have hired an artist so the game didn't look like shit
>How did Undertale get away with being one of the best games of all time?
>year 1
this is great I love it and the community
>year 2
where is everyone ?
Technically he did. Temmie is the reason the game is at the quality it is.
Hell, Toby's said Temmie was too good at some of her sprites and went back and made them shittier. I think Toby is the reason Greater Dog has such a tiny head
Same here, friendo.
It's a relatively small game. What's left to discuss?
Besides goatmom fanart.
It's a shit game. Only furries and lonely autists trapped completely on the internet love it. For everyone else it's a LOLRANDUMB joke fest with really obnoxious characters. It's a game that thinks it's way funnier than it actually is.
It's only "deep" if you've never even considered subtext before in your life like the pleb pos that you are. If you love this game, do us all a favor and just go back to cringeposting on furry Twitter.
I'm only here to save goatmom pics, so keep em coming
but have you fapped to undertales, that is the real question
Would you?
I have saved an ungodly amount of Toriel porn.
>Browsing Undertale content randomly
>Discover Spongetale
I have no idea why I am so fascinated by this concept
Fun gameplay, replayability, fantastic OST, and
a great story with fun and lovable characters.

No, I don't like furries nor skellies and from what I've seen the characters sprites looks like trash.
Lisa was terrible in The Simpsons and in Undertale as well.
>and went back and made them shittier
I've said before that Undertale would've been leagues better if there was somebody on the team that reigned in Toby's bullshit but GODDAMN.
Still well drawn hi-res fanart of the MC.
The MLP stuff is cropped out and there's nothing MLP about that crop specifically, so it shouldn't bother you.
On the other hand, do you really want some high quality art to be alongside shittier art?
Art consistency is important too. Otherwise you get stuff like pic related
...
He made them the charming shitty, if that makes sense. Here's a sprite that got rejected because it was "too good" but therefor looked weird. The sloppyness kind of brings all the sprites together in a way
Because mainstream games are watered down pieces of shit made for the lootbox generation that makes cod kids look good.
>thread alive for over an hour

It had no reason to be as good as it was.

What the actual fuck?
>Look up who Frisk is supposed to be
>It's fucking Patchy the Pirate
Consistency is so much more important than the quality of individual assets. I hope toby's next game has a budget for graphics though...
What are you talking about there were literally no furries in that game just skeletons and memes
EVEN BETTER
That has no right to be as cool as it is.
>rng
do they allow Sup Forums at halfway houses now?
THICC /ss/ furry within the first five minutes. This is the only acceptable answer.
Why the fuck is this even a thing? And why is it actually good?
youtube.com
>Do you wanna have a Pat Time?
Oh jesus this game. It's even got the Spongebob font
Mostly just by being original in the setup, having the core cast's designs be memorable, throwing in some dark meta-narrative in a few different avenues, and having a legitimately phenomenal OST. There's a lot you can not like about the game (I personally don't think it's one of the best of all time or anything) but that soundtrack is just incredible.
Earthbound did the same thing. Its supposed to have a childliek quality to it.
The fuck, I must've misclicked while looking at Liked Videos. I meant to post this (not that Thunder Force IV's OST isn't fantastic also):
mashing random songs together is the pastime of intellectuals soundcloud.com
I guess newer musicians just really want practice, and the Undertale OST is easy enough to recreate and alter, and is popular enough both the person making the music AND the audience will be interested in it in the first place.
it's a shame the battles were so easy because the concept is really solid, and will never be iterated on because of reasons
The best we can hope for is the Undertale fangame scene, and while there does seem to be work being done there, there isn't that much being created, and it isn't being taken as far as one would hope.
even the lisa scene managed to produce a half decent game and the fanbase is a fraction of the size
oh well
I think it'd be a bit harder to nail both the tone and gameplay of Undertale. Lisa at least is a normal RPG gameplay wise. With Undertale you gotta deal with the bullet mechanics and make it all fun and whimsy.
>It'd just be considered an Undertale ripoff
unless you're mimicking the writing style and you're copying the 'out of battle it's a typical overworld, but in battle you're a little heart in a void' thing. I don't see people comparing undertale to contra, nuclear throne, asteroids, raiden, etc. all undertale did was make it a little more minimal by removing the need to hammer a fire button
>I don't see people comparing undertale to contra, nuclear throne, asteroids, raiden, etc
for good reason, it's not that close to any of those; it's a unique hybrid
It really is bizarre. These AU thingies are fucking horrible, but most music based on them sounds great. They don't deserve it.
the combat i mean
"dodge bullets" has been a videogame thing since forever so unless you've ripping them off in regards to aesthetic you shouldn't be afraid of being compared to undertale. just ditch the rpg elements (they have no impact on the gameplay anyway)
I doubt they went into it unwillingly, though I wouldn't be surprised if now they have trouble pulling out of it since it's where most of their fanbase is from.
Best they can do without leaving is creating more original tracks for the more original Undertale fan creations.
>just ditch the rpg elements (they have no impact on the gameplay anyway)
wrong
the hybrid is what makes undertale's gameplay stand out
Music shitposts are easy. Just plug a motif into whatever chiptune set Toby used and suddenly you have a whole new song.
Here's the Undertale OST song with Mettaton motifs in it. Shit's great
What in the fuck, why it sounds so good?
what the actual fuck
...
By being one of the best games of all time
the rpg flavor makes the baby bullet hell pop out and frames it as really offbeat and interesting but ultimately the mechanics make no core impact: attack? defense? equipment? they barely change the difficulty. healing items, sure, but that's really it. you don't need any empty numbers to make a comedic bullet hell.
>but ultimately the mechanics make no core impact
yes this is the problem which a proper successor would solve
Bro those exact mechanics are a major plot point
post more gote
undertale's non-rpg worked well ludonarratively but it would be nice to see an actual rpg
characters are ok, and i expected more of a darker story. if it were more like the true lab the whole game i would've loved it
By not being one
This character was what killed this otherwise decent game. What was Toby thinking?
