It's the perfect RPG. I think it may even be better than Chrono Trigger.
Nathan Martinez
]Yeah there's really nothing else like it.
Brody Perez
How far are you? I always pick it up but never finish. I usually drop it around Fourstar.
Brandon Lee
No OP, the game stinks
Chase Scott
Nice reference user, though that advertising was so fucking stupid.
Lucas Gray
I think it's great for everything but the gameplay, it's a little easy to just steamroll everything once you get your party's skills online and it is a little clunky to fiddle around with the menus.
Mother 3 has a lot better gameplay, but it does everything that makes Earthbound so great a little bit worse.
Henry Jackson
I just got done with Threed. What a great level. I even got my brother who doesn't normally like RPGs to give it a shot, and he's enjoying it surprisingly. Really kind of blows my mind that this franchise never took off in the states the way it could have. Part of me wonders if Nintendo worried about the satire offending Americans or something.
Carter Baker
I suggest leaving user, there are a lot of cool things that really are so much better unspoiled to you.
It's quite good, my personal favorite game ever made. Happy to hear you're enjoying and hope you continue to enjoy it just as much.
William Taylor
>Mother 3 has a lot better gameplay, but it does everything that makes Earthbound so great a little bit worse.
So much this. Mother 3 really cut back on the exploration, and that was the best thing about EarthBound, just strolling through towns and chatting with strangers.
Michael Mitchell
Nah, it wasn't that. Before FFVII jrpgs were pretty niche in the US, even things like final fantasy and dragon quest were relatively small in fanbase. Earthbound suffered from a poor marketing campaign, being more expensive then other snes game due to every copy including a guidebook, and not being an already established name like it was in Japan.
Connor Moore
Great game that makes me realize whenever I play it how few funny RPGs exist.
Luis Carter
I feel the same way, Mother 3 just feels so linear like you are being rail-roaded and it's just annoying after a certain point, not enough to ruin the game but it just feels like you aren't free.
I get they did it so they can tell the story in a more cinematic way, but Earthbound was never great because of its story or characters, but just its atmosphere that's built through stuff like the weird things townspeople say, being able to walk around and explore, the items, the dumb events in the story and just junk like that. Mother 3 still delivers a lot on those points, it's still a great game, but in trying to focus more on its story it sacrifices a little bit of what was so special about Earthbound.
Brody Rodriguez
You were having fake fun. Now start hating it like the rest of Sup Forums
Seriously play Mother 3. It's a little different but you won;t regret it
Lucas Green
>Why didn't anyone tell me how good it is?
Where the hell were you? This game gets nothing but praise for how unique and witty it is.
Levi Moore
>why didn't anyone tell me how good it is
The game has been sucked off on the internet since forever. How have you missed that?
Sebastian Parker
Sup Forums dumps on this game all the time and then turns around to blow Mother 3
Joseph Cox
Earthbound is pretty linear honestly, not sure what you guys are talking about. Earthbound just has less urgency making it feel more open. In Mother 3 the plot is a bigger focus so the game pushes you more to go do whatever it is you're suppose to do at the moment. Mother 1 is open world as you can basically wonder around the entire world of the game after reaching Thanksgiving and getting Loid to join you. Playing EB makes M3 more meaningful though. Sup Forums shits on every game, don't take the people here so seriously. Overall most users like the Mother series. Undertale made the shitposting for the series more extreme is all.
Owen Evans
Mother 3 is decent. Just isn't worth the replayability to me. The combat system is fun with the combo attack.
Wyatt Powell
>Why didn't anyone tell me how good it is? This franchise has a pretty big fanbase. Looking up info and it's reception is not difficult at all. That being said, yeah it's pretty fucking good. The previous game for the NES is really archaic and difficult to get into, but it has its moments and is worth playing. The sequel for the Game Boy Advance is excellent. If you enjoy Earthbound then I highly recommend that you check out Mother 3. Although it's Japan only, there's thankfully a very high quality ROM and translation available for free. It's odd that as harsh as Nintendo tends to be with fan games, they openly admitted knowledge about it (or at least Reggie did) and gave the translation project a free pass.
Eli Gomez
They're jrpgs, often replayability is never considered but that hasn't stopped me from playing all three mother games at least 15+ times.
Charles Allen
This, sadly. Not sure why Sup Forums likes Mother 3 so much. It's a fine game, but lacks the scope and ambition that made Earthbound so great. You travel the whole world in Earthbound before going back in time to fight an alien demigod. Mother 3 takes place in a much smaller area with a much smaller foe.
Ryder Thompson
Earthbound is linear but you are still free to wander wherever you want when you get to new areas, Mother 3 just feels restrictive and in doing so stifles what Earthbound did so well in favour of a plot that never really grabbed me. It still has its moments but it loses the atmosphere of Earthbound a little in the process, like I said in one of my posts.
Noah Sanders
I remember when Earthbound and Kirby Super Star were universally regarded as games that absolutely everyone agrees are excellent. Now days, you can't go five posts without some criticism that doesn't make sense or doesn't apply to the subject at hand. People say Sup Forums has always been shit but it wasn't always this shitty.
Isaiah Howard
I know about shitposting, buddy, but this has always been the case on Sup Forums, long before Undertale came out. I'm sure plenty of people on this board like all games, but I never see anyone shit on Mother 3 the way I do for Earthbound.
I still like Mother 3 a whole bunch, I really do, it just kind of feels hipster-y the way Sup Forums throws Earthbound under the bus yet venerates Mother 3
Landon Morris
I own this game on my 3DS and my SNES Classic. I really want to play but I’m not sure which platform I should go for. I love playing RPGs on my 3DS, and I can take it with me, but it looks better and a better D-Pad on the Classic.... hmmmmm
Ryder Anderson
Even after all these years, I fantasize....
Probably for the best it never happened, but still.
Carter Brooks
I myself love all three games equally but I get you. I enjoy how different all three personally but some might enjoy a certain aspect that on or two of the games have that one doesn't. Just shitposting dude. Nothing we can do about, just Sup Forums.
Camden Bennett
I have. Often I see many complain the story is too hamfisted and forced, the characters are underdeveloped, and the game is linear with small locations. I see Mother 3 shit on fairly often when it is brought up. I do as well. It had a lot of potential and many things were lost from the transition from n64 to gba but in the end I think the game we got was excellent. We really can't say for sure if it was better or worse on the n64, just that quite a lot of content was cut.
Tyler Wilson
I like Mother 3 more so for having better dungeons, more unique party members, and more interesting combat overall. From a gameplay perspective, Mother 3 was more exciting to play through. Earthbound, on the other hand, felt far more vibrant with populated towns and constantly changing aesthetics. Then there's a huge shift in the later half when towns become far less common and the world starts to feel much more threatening, all the way up to the end when shit starts to get ridiculous. It's also impressive how much emotion the story portrayed out of Ness despite the fact that he's a silent protagonist and most of the characters are pretty cookie cutter, yet it's their reactions to him that tend to stand out so powerfully. The Lumine Hall is still one of the more surprising and memorable moments for me.
Both games are excellent and well worth playing, but Earthbound feels far more unique while Mother 3 is just a really well done JRPG. Taking Scott McCloud's example, Earthbound follows Form as it attempts to reinvent the medium while Mother 3 follows Purpose as it attempts to tell a story using its chosen medium.
Eli Gonzalez
chrono trigger sucks.
Jaxon Watson
Wasn't this pretty much near completion before getting canned? Ever since StarFox 2 finally got released, I've thought about the incredibly slim chance that maybe, just maybe, it might be included in the N64 Mini. I mean, it obviously won't but holy fucking shit can you imagine? Like, god fucking damn.
Easton Howard
Nah, very far from completion honestly. Itoi and his team were pretty inexperienced with developing 3d games as well Itoi himself saying he was pretty neglectful of the project, often joking he spent more time fishing and such. Nintendo tried to help them, the team behind the models for pokemon stadium were added to help model stuff, but things just took too long and had they continued it would have released well after the gamecube released.
Cooper Scott
In terms of gameplay, Mother 3 definitely has the advantage and if the gameplay of Earthbound is really holding it back for you I can see why you would like it more. It stands as a good game with good atmosphere/story (?) and has its fair share of unique moments that make it stand out.
I think Earthbound is more like a not-so-good game with great atmosphere/story(?), which I prefer in the end for just how well it manages to do its own thing in that regard, I can forgive it for its gameplay shortcomings.
It's really down to personal preference, and that's fine, but it's just obnoxious to see people act like either are outright bad games.
Adam Howard
Ah, yup. You're right. I just looked it up now. What a damn shame. Oh well, it is what it is.
Oh, absolutely. Both games are phenomenal and I feel that they actually compliment each other really well. But I suppose that, with many fanbases, it's common to take sides and go to extremes rather than trying to find a middle ground.
Robert Evans
>positive earthbound thread How did this happen?
Ethan Perez
maybe it's just me but i've finished Mother 3 three times and Earthbound only once.
Tyler Hill
contrarianism is a flat circle
Oliver Nguyen
>Why didn't anyone tell me how good it is? People never stop jerking off over it, what are you talking about? >I think it may even be better than Chrono Trigger. Lots of games are better than Chrono Trigger. It's actually a really shitty RPG. You have very low standards.
Camden Garcia
Mother 3 is better
Ethan Lewis
I found a copy at goodwill for $7. I didnt get really far in it. I sold it to buy a ps4.
