Smell powered gaming
I guess with sufficient VR technology you could create some new genres
there's lots of unique games out there that don't perfectly fit any of the big genres
just making a unique game isn't enough, it has to have enough influence to inspire others to make similar games. probably the best example would be doom - it wasn't even the first game to use first person shooting as the primary game mechanic, but it did it so well that any game that came after were first classified as "doomclones" before "first person shooter" as a genre was even defined. a more recent example would be minecraft and it too was not the first of its kind
Battle royale has officially become a genre so yeah
Not without radically new hardware, like VR.
You can still do new things though.
>refining and improving genres
>experimenting with adding or removing gameplay elements to genres to create new experiences
>combining genres in new and innovative ways
I don't think you can call things like that new genres, but they'll be marketed as such nonetheless. Look at fairly recent stuff like MOBAs or Battle Royale survival shooters. At best, they're just a new take on an existing genre, but people will act like they've invented a new genre anyway.
An open world audio based exploratory experience where you play as a blind chick.
Isn't there a horror game like this?
new genres pop up as technology allows
the problem is all recent new genres have been cancer thanks to mobile
Yeah, it's called "Perception". Though it's not really open world I guess.
its not audiobased either
I am making some games that have rarely or never been done before elements but they are not new genres, some have features rarely used in games or genre combinations that are rare.
However as I am a Sup Forums dev, you will need to wait longer than usual. Not gonna reveal anything because they can be easily stolen.
Make a game that gets lots of copycats and boom, a new genre is born.
Nobody wants to steal your shitty ideas, you nerd.
Good luck my dude
>Sup Forums talks about things it has no knowledge of
study a bit of genre history and define what genre is and then we'll talk buddy
See you on reddit
>It's a "vague posting fag tries to act superior" episode
Years ago I came across a few japanese mountain-climbing games. It's basically a genre I never knew it even existed.
So yeah, if you make a good game out of a yet unexplored activity, a new genre could be born.
Blacksmithing simulator when
everything that exists is just a re-arrangement of existing things, but more or less what said.
>No combining existing genres
>tfw no new battlezone never ever
First person sport game.
Ye.
...
desu if your idea can be easily stolen/replicated from just a description/screenshot they are probably not very good ideas to begin with
I got two words for you "Hero Management Specialist".
More specifically, a game (or series) where the M.C. is not the hero, or possibly not REALLY the M.C. (just the one you control.). I suppose you could compare it to Digimon because you're training the "hero" but Digimon actually are characters you have a level of control over once they get out into fights. I want your control over the hero to be more like in "The Last Guardian" where you don't directly make things happen, but you being there encourages things to happen. However, you'll also be able to support the hero once shit hits the fan. Hero needs an element to take on a certain type of baddie? Throw a potion at the mob and shout to the hero. Hero is injured and needs a hand? Too bad, you're weak and will die if you go physical (throw a heal-pot at the hero though, he'll appreciate it). Hero slipped off of an edge? You'd better go chase after, or HIDE because hiding is good if you're being chased. You might have to go back to town and recruit/train/equip a new hero/heroine if shit goes sideways. Maybe you COULD have elements from other games (like hero breeding, or whatever the fuck they do in Princess Maker), also betting would definitely be an option especially shady betting (for your hero to take a fall so that you can profit), ALSO maybe a hero arena because that could be cool (I mean you'd be on the sidelines, helping your hero, and distracting the other trainer).
so what is there to talk about sempai?
imagine sitting on a bench for a whole hockey game but in VR
Second person shooter.
shit you got a youtube let's player game in there if you make some wacky fun out of throwing hockey sticks, empty gatorade bottles, and other garbage on the ice and watching them trip and fall over all over eachother with exaggerated physics.
Reminds me of the Sodachi Dojo minigame from Yakuza 4. Best part of the game, if you ask me.
Played this on Kongregate
>Blind Girl Simulator
Well
>Ancap Kiddie Simulator
No, go away.
>Sidekick Simulator
Meh
how about a vr game where you bang on your desk and demand pictures of spiderman
So basically controlling your character with the point of view of the enemy?
Not an argument.
Probably, I recently bought two games that are played by typing, don't know what genre that would be.
Also pokemon go with the AR+gps stuff was something new. Don't know if those features are genre-defining tho
MGS and Ratchet & Clank 3 did this for a boss
Turtles in Time as well
Of course. Gaming is pretty young.
I think Kojima may be about to do just that with Death Stranding. The guy practically invented the stealth genre, so I’d say it’s not *too* I unlikely that ol’ Norman’s gonna be doing some things we aren’t exactly familiar with.
Must have played Faggotry Simulator. Didn't you know? If you suck cock in the game, you suck it IRL.
this type of game genre could be explored a lot more.
...
There are a few tens of MOBA's that have been made since DOTA. They all are more similar to each other than to anything else.
I would say its safe to say its a genre of its own because of it.
subgenre
VR maybe. or better yet AR.
Do people call gta-clones gta-clones anymore?
