I'm near the end of FF9, which is the first turn based RPG I've ever played. I love it and am planning to play more of the series, but what turn based RPGs outside of the FF series should I also play?

You should play Chrono Trigger. It's pretty short, I'm just wrapping it up
Follow this
Legend of Dragon, Xenogears
Skies of Arcadia for sure. Looks great on Dolphin.
Shadow Hearts
>outside of the FF series
Breath of Fire 2,3 and 4
Grandia 1 and then 2
Persona 3,4 and 5
SMT in general
Legend of Legaia
Star Ocean 2 (preferably PS1 version, not PSP)
All of the Etryan Odyssey games you can stomach
Roguelikes in the vain of Shiren the Wanderer (which includes Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Azure Dreams etc.)
some of the Dragon Quest games
Wild Arms 1 (can't speak for the rest)
That should hold you over for at least a year. Enjoy
FFX is honestly optional tier. FFX-2 is where the series died, FFX was still decent.
Nice reading comprehension fagatron.
pretty much every square/enix game before the merger happened
the chrono games are a good starting point
Listen to this nigga, he knows his shit.
Star Ocean is not turn based, you mongrel.
I would not recommend Legend of Dragoon at all. It is a chore to play through and the english translation is garbage. None of the characters are remotely worthwhile.
pokemon platinum/HGSS
Forgive me, imbecile. I haven't played it in over 10 years.
That comes with the territory with older JRPGs
I'm pretty sure you just haven't played it. You would have remembered if it was turn based or not.
>ctrl + f
>no super mario RPG
what the fuck is wrong with you people
On top of this, the first two Paper Mario games are fantastic
I remember fondly fucking myself over with farming fake medals, leveling to over 100 and not getting any skills, being unable to beat the final boss.
I don't give a shit what you think. OP should play the game regardless.
There are literally dozens of older JRPGs that have a better translation and better character than that piece of shit.
You remember all of that but not the combat?
..all of that? Was the sentence too long for you?
FF9's stat growth system is the stupidest idea. Gear affects how your stats grow, but the game never tells you this.
X-2 is fine. It has some """""""questionable""""""" design decisions, but it's honestly one of the better games in the series.
>a retard
>likes XIII
>hate XII
what a surprise
>it's honestly one of the better games in the series
ATB already puts it in the bottom rung.
And there are literally hundreds that are worse. Outside of the biggest games or lucky exceptions, translations were absolute shit. Legend of Dragoon’s isn’t really any worse than FF7’s. As for characters, I’d say Lavitz, Rose, and Kongol for example were all pretty memorable and likable even if they have the depth of a puddle (also not unusual for the genre).
10 and 12 are good, 2 and 13 are shit mate
It also doesn’t really matter at all unless you have OCD
>Legend of Dragoon’s isn’t really any worse than FF7’s
How the fuck was KONGOL memorable in the slightest? He doesn't even say or do anything after joining your party.
Play FF6-10, you'll thank me later.
...
...
Play the DS version of FFIV. Shit is so cash.
Not even comparable.
who care everything gets so easy after auto haste and auto regen that it doesnt even matter anymore
His design and the fact that he was a recurring boss before joining
Just looked this all up and while true shit matters fuck all really.
Since to begin with the game is not really hard in anyway and the stat growth shit wont really matter unless one horribly sucks at this easy game and grind super ultra hard like some sort of loser ass faggot or autismo.
grandia 2
I want Meru to Perky Step on my dick!
This game looks gay.
You can defeat everything including Ozma without messing with that system.
How is one one word typo completely incomparable to another one word typo?
Top taste mate
Try to fix Meru's line by changing one word. I dare you.
>avoid X
disqualified for shit bait
Lost odyssey and chrono trigger if you want more stuff like ff9
other wise, FFX, Persona 3/4/5, smt 3/4/4A would be the next games i recommend.
>I can’t believe a person exists with such bitchin’ magic power
>CTRL+F "Phantasy Star"
>zero results
Showing off shit taste as usual I see.
Xenosaga 1 and 3
2's battle system blows but you can watch all the cutscenes for the story
That doesn't sound natural at all.
Skip X, play X-2.
>t. didn't grow up in the 80s-90s
At least machine translations will eventually be advanced enough that they will make all those old JRPGS playable
Super Mario RPG
Paper Mario 64
did anyone say suikoden? because its great, 2 is the best one btw
Parasite Eve 1 is basically a jrpg, it's pretty solid
2 is less-so an rpg but still a good game
>Optional XIII
>Avoid X and XII
Yeah no.
Not really turnbased though.
Why not TYD?
Earthbound's battle system is arguably dated, but playing that game is considered a rite of passage.
Mother 3
You mean starting to play the game and dropping it 1 hour in.
Golden Sun
You've already played the best FF. Nocturne is good. Valkyrie Profile is top tier.
Is 8 really worth playing? Can someone weigh in on this?
I think so. A lot of the hate it gets is honestly because it came after 7 and wasn't the exact same and 7 was many people's first FF.
Yeah. It’s still a good game for all its strange downfalls
It's pretty good. Did you honestly refrain from playing it because of the dumb bullshit people spout? If dumb story elements would devalue final fantasy games, then the franchise would have ended after fucking 2.
Although I guess I'm biased, it's my favorite of the bunch.
It's fine. The story is pants on head retarded, but it's not a terrible game.
Final Fantasy II is the worst game in the entire franchise.
I wouldn't recommend Xenosaga to someone knew to turn-based JRPG.
Xenosaga games are a bitch to finish.
it has a shit ton of issues but even if its easy to dump on, its still a good game
Thats a funny way of saying ff13/15, while FF2 does have a huge number of problems with the stat gain system and the dungeon design, at least it came and went unlike now where we have mary stus like lightning and the backstreet brothers of ff15 shoved down our throats
2 is the worst game in the series. SaGa is a great series though.
This is the only SaGa game I played. I don't think very highly of the series.
It's a rough place to start.
You have terrible taste.
It's worth playing through at least once.
You might end up finding its flaws endearing. Personally I'll never forgive it for lowering your grade for exploring stuff at the beginning of the game.
Unlimited SaGa is shit
t. brainlet
FF was always about the charm of its characters, the atmosphere, the music, things of that nature. FFX-2 threw everything out of the window and tried to make it some kind of weird Charlie's Angels: The Game. I could not immerse myself with anything that was taking place, it was just a big fucking joke.
>one of the better games
You are the reason FF died then if you truly think that.
Here's a very simple and factual FF tier list.
PS1 FF > SNES FF > *gap* > PS2 FF > *huge gap* > PS3/PS4 FF > NES FF
Mainline games peaked with PS1 games. SNES games are quite good as well, but lacking in virtually every aspect compared to their PS1 counterparts. FF went into a different, new direction with PS2 games and that's where it all went downhill. PS3/4 games are "JUST FUCK MY SHIT UP" tier. NES games are dull and feel like a chore due to being very simple and bare bones. There's no reason to play them other than to clear them from your backlist.
Outside of FF I would recommend Suikoden games. The first two in particular are great. Suikoden 2, in my opinion, is the best classic JRPG.
>Here's a very simple and factual FF tier list.
OP didn't ask for this you moron.
The only decent ps2 FF was 12 though.
When did people start to appreciate 5? I love it too but last I remember no one really payed any attention to it.
smrpg, lufia II, chrono trigger for snes
wild arms, suikoden, suikoden II, ff tactics *I know you said no ff, but this is worth mentioning because it's incredible*, saga frontier II, Valkyrie Profile for psx.
SMT anything for anything, *almost all SMT games are excellent* Persona 3 and 5 if you can handle the sim aspect of it.
Bunch of psx and ps2 I'm missing, oh, and most breath of fire games are legit.
and never, under any circumstance, listen to someone telling you to play ff xiii. Every single aspect of the game is bad on so many levels.
>When did people start to appreciate 5?
Probably around when Exdeath became the big "meme character" in Dissidia.
Just play anything squaresoft/enix and square enix barring FF13, its spinoffs, and FF15
That'll already keep you occupied for a long time
Unlimited SaGa is not a good sample of the series. Minstrel Song on the PS2 is a much, much easier game to get into and much less easily broken.
After the GBA port.
FF9 is one of the easiest games in the franchise anyways. No one looks fondly at the game for its diverse combat.
>The only user on the whole thread who mentioned Legend of Legaia
Shame on all the rest of you
What the hell is wrong with Final Fantasy II's story? In the unlikely case you mean IV, carry on. Your point of them not ending because of such minor things is very much valid, I agree.
radiant historia for the ds
