Why can't I find a fantasy game that's just dark enough? Everything that tries a darker story ends up either being like FE Conquest (Tries to be dark, but really is just obnoxious angst) or Berserk (Completely over-the-top and grim just for the sake of being grimdank.)
I want a story that's dark because of what happens to the characters, not because "Hehe, the world is a dark place for badasses like me. Nothing personnel kid."

thats a half truth. The manga improved till around the early 00's, but since then it has only gets more and more stylized which takes out all the dark essence of Berserk.

I have only read the first 2 tomes and what I liked the most was the art. Knowing about this giant drop in quality really bums me out.
literallly no manga that runs this long is immune to this. they all change, whether the artist wants it or not. right looks fine anyway. it's all context. how the rest of the characters look in relation to guts is important. at least it didn't suffer as much as fist of the north star. talk about hideous transformation.

Berserk will never end because Miura has written himself into a horrible hole. The last decade has been about curing Casca, and there is no way he will be able to make her return satisfying enough to make up for that. It'll be another two years before they leave the island; Casca and Guts will reconcile their demon cuck-baby and live happily ever after, Griffith will be neoJesus and Miura can fucking finally die and end this twenty year nightmare
It's the only way to save the series at this point.

That's more or less the atmosphere of the general area. Night times, swamps, caverns, dungeons, and the pit are pretty spooktacular, and the story (while muddled with the occasional Japanese hamfistedness or absurdity) goes surprisingly south just far enough in a lot of places.

I had a very weird obsession with the first Drakengard. I spent days grinding the weapons to their max level, beat the game countless times and even re-bought it over the years because I lost it in moves, or it got stolen.
The games are very poorly put together, you basically go through them for the characters, story and Yoko's balls to the wall insanity.
You can go on Youtube, watch all the cutscenes and dialogue and save yourself the trouble. If you want to experience something close to the game, though, just play the battle BGM for about eight hours while punching yourself in the dick.
