Another difference here is also that the stuff you get in WoW are in some what way useful for you.
In other games that uses the concept of lootboxes, you gain jack shit but aesthetic.
I know some games has useful items, but they are scarce as fuck.
Plus, when you pay $10 in wow, you get 30 days of chance of getting something and take part of the community it has and events.
Paying $10 for lootboxes gives you five minutes of enjoyment, top.

All WoW is is pay to play, which you can even circumvent via making enough in-game currency. Blizzard has never not been transparent about how hard their sub fees jew you, and you know the exact loot tables and chances for every single mob and treasure chest.
