Nostalgia based games are no way for a franchise to move forward. Mania could be a 10/10 game, but the problem is it pays too hard a tribute to the old games even with it's new inclusions. What can I expect in the future? Mania 2, 3, 4, 5? Any time the franchise as tried to take a step forward it has been a terrible mistake. Now it went all the way to the beginning because that's the only time when it was good. The problem is that's no place to stay. It's a dead stale franchise because the minute they take a step out of that start zone it is awful, and until they manage to do something new that isn't the old sonics and that also isn't garbage it is a creatively dead franchise.

Iizuka wasn't head of the team until 2008 or so, IIRC. He was still in the US division of Sonic Team during 06's development working NiGHTS and the Rivals games.

He moved to the US and supervised most of Mania's development while Forces was starting full scale development.
