Kingdom Farts

Which entries should I play and on what platform? Which entries should I miss and why?

Assuming you have a PS4, get the 1.5+2.5 bundle, and then the 2.8 compilation.

I wouldn't recommend skipping anything from those bundles. The less relevant games have been adapted into "cinematic adaptations".

There's also a mobile game, but at the moment it's just clusterfucking everything and raising more questions. Don't worry about it for now.

I don't even think the mobile game will be finished by the time 3 comes out. And even then Nomura has more sagas to pump out.

but that's not a problem because KHX is a prequel to entire series.

Shadowman when?

miss those portable games they are all shit.

Dream Drop Distance is important though and 358/2 Days is more or less essential.

Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance aren't that bad.

Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance are both pretty good. Not as good as KH 1 or 2, but nowhere near 'shit'.

I just can't take this series seriously, and I've tried.

None of them.
KH is edgy button-mashy garbage that misuses all of its assets. The only one maybe worth playing is Re: Chain of Memories, which at least has SOME depth and customisation.

Play them all in order, preferably the PS4 releases if you have a PS4 since you only have to buy two games. You can't really miss any of them because they all have important pieces to the overall plot tied to them.

>taking Kingdom Hearts seriously

It's funny, opinion on Sup Forums is that KH needs more Square Enix and less Disney and Sup Forums thinks KH needs more Disney and less Square Enix

Great, you aren't supposed to anyway.

It honestly should have ended with the first game. Everything was done just right in the first one but after that it started to take itself too seriously to the point where everything became ridiculous.

>opinion on Sup Forums is that KH needs more Square Enix and less Disney
No it's not.

>reminder that KH2 is trash compared to KH1.

I don't think anyone can, user.

Nah.

>QTEs
>cutscene every 5 minutes of gameplay
>clusterfuck of a story

I had more fun with kh2 desu

Kingdom Hearts 3 is going to better than Kingdom Hearts 2 solely based on the fact that the levels are more open-ended and exploitable. That was the main issue with KH2-very boring short linear levels.

KH3 will be the greatest game of our time btw

>no open world shit in a triple A game
>actual varied levels like the good old days
>keyblade switching, situation deck, best action combat in videogames
>mechs and shit
>THE climactic conclusion
>probably a 10000000 heartless fight

I liked the gameplay more than 1.

>KH1
>not having a clusterfuck story
I like that KH2 embraced the clusterfuck.
KH2 introduced a new type of enemy also, on top of already having a varied list of heartless to fight

>QTEs
>cutscene every 5 minutes of gameplay

>I liked the gameplay more than 1

KH2 > KH1 = BBS > DDD > (Re:)Coded > 358/2 Days > (Re:)Chain of Memories

Am I the only one who likes the stories in these games? Granted, I've only played 1, CoM and recently finished 2 but I think they're great. It's not something I take too seriously but it's not like it's impossible to follow. Maybe the confusion will start later on but I'm not having any problems as of now. Hell, KH2 might be one of my favorite games of all time.

Uχ definitely won't wrap up before KHIII and its plot elements will not be wrapped up in KHIII.
It's basically setting up the next saga.

The original χ[chi], though, should be watched through (since it's impossible to play) before KHIII.

>358/2 Days is more or less essential.
Fuckin' how
Nearly the whole plot goes down the memory hole at the end

the ridiculous shit is was the makes it enjoyable, just see it as a silly joyride

>not 1000 Heartless
>1000 Nobodies
>1000 Unversed
>1000 Nightmares
>at the same time

Re:coded has objectively the best Command Deck combat. Overclock abilities are also god-tier.

I love the story. If you can follow it so far, congrats, you're a functioning adult.
It really isn't as hard as people make it out to be.

Saying that again won't make me like 1 more.

>clusterfuck of a story
>Playing for the story
2 focuses on what's important: combat

Just get the collections on ps4

This.

Who takes video games in general seriously? I'll admit though, I replayed the Kingdom Hearts games earlier this year and cried during the ending of 1 and 2. I think the series first 3 games, being 1, CoM, and 2 are all worth trying and have great stories and great gameplay. Let me just tell you something about KH1 so you don't end up a faggot ragequitting. In different worlds in the game, to progress you need to go to different areas of the map. These could be new areas, or a previous area you've been to with new shit to do. If you're skipping the cutscenes and reading text, it shouldn't be to big of an issue because you won't be lost in the narrative. If you're a really new school gamer this isn't the easiest series to get into, but if you just stick through it and guidefag if you must you're in for one hell of a time with the games.

HOT FUCKING TAKE:
SANCTUARY > SIMPLE & CLEAN

So what the fuck is a heart

...

If you're watching the cutscenes and reading the text* fuck.

Play the first one for a proper introduction to the series, and then play the Final Mix version of KHII.

Ignore everything else. Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance are the best that the "side" games ever get and they're still underwhelming with garbage plotlines to boot. The others are just flat-out bad.

I used to be a fan but I've really become so apathetic to the series that I don't give a shit about KH3. That's what will happen to you if you force yourself to play all of them.

It's true. In Japanese and English.

In any other fiction it would be called a soul, with the added bonus of affecting a physical appearance on the body which is basically just a meat suit.

>versus mashing the fuck out of X

HOT TAKE: They're both god tier. Now that I think about it. What are they doing for KH3? If I don't see the gang in an epic CGI opening with a new Utada song playing I will swiftly punch a hole through my tv and yell at the top of my lungs.

I used to have this autistic friend who intrudec me to the series who cried everytime he saw the intro of kh2

Get 1.5 and 2.5
Play 1 final mix and 2 final mix
Every other game is garbage.

I mean I like the story, but I'll be the first to say that some of the stuff that goes on in it didn't need to happen. If you keep going and make it to Dream Drop Distance, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Story isn't mega hard to follow, it's just that there are a lot of things that are regularily retconned or are flat out just not explained.
Take hearts for example. Hearts are one of the most important concepts of the plot, and KH2 literally refuses to actually explain what a heart is and what it can do

The story up until 2 is pretty much your standard anime plot. It's not until Birth By Sleep that everything goes down the shitter.

So then why did Terra himself stay in the soul when Xehanort still had his heart?

t. certified Sup Forums lurker for ten minutes

You can get every single title on the PS4.

And you can't really skip anything because if you do then the plot will stop making sense entirely.

I fucking love it.

That doesn't mean I can't recognize that it's convoluted bullshit

This is your brain on anime kids. This brainlet doesn't know every anime story is unoriginal and has been done before.

>a lot of things that are regularily retconned
Like what specifically? Not being an ass but generally what people list aren't retcons, though there are a couple in KH.
Are you talking about Lingering Will? LW is Terra's left over will and emotions taking over his armor. His Heart is still in his body, it's just that Xehanort's Heart is also in his body and is the dominant force. This was in Blank Point. Soul in KH is something completely different in KH.

I feel like if you have the capacity for critical thought, you don't need to have a scene where Sora looks at the camera and gives you a lesson on the metaphysics of KH

There aren't any real retcons (none that impact the story, at any rate), and if something isn't explicitly explained in-game, then it's in an Ultimania somewhere.
But those interviews are really for the big fans that want to deep dive.
You don't need them, or even the in-game Reports, to understand what's happening.

The fuck are you talking about

In the case of Terra-Xehanort, that was both Terra and Xehanort's hearts inhabiting the same body. Xehanort is stronger so he became the dominant identity

KH1>Re:Coded>2>BBS>COM>DDD>Days

This is irrefutable fact.

This

holy shit are u me?

I think they're charming as heck and have great moments. I actually hope Nomura does a more grounded story with 3 though to bring it all around.

>KH1 over KHII
>Re:coded over KHII
>BbS over DDD
You're welcome to your opinion and everything, but that doesn't mean you're right

I don't think there's a bad Kingdom Hearts game. They're all worth playing, but I don't have a ps3/ps4 so I haven't played any of the remakes, just the originals via emulators and 3DS. Run through em in order, that's what I did and I had a blast.

KH1 Sup Forums fags need to leave.

KH1 has a better story but KH2 plays far, far better.

And also if you actually want the Disney shit to matter then KH1 is the only one where that's the case, for the entire series after 1 the Disney shit is barely set-dressing

>a japanese game with final fantasy characters who all have over the top and poorly explained abilities fight over vague motivations complete with power creep
>not anime an anime plot

What the fuck is it then?

Are we going to have a new fantastic iconic Utada song for KH3?

In KH1, Kairi became a mindless zombie without her heart, and when Sora's heart became a heartless it was still HIM. The game clearly intended for hearts to be literal souls.

Then KH2 introduced Nobodies and they had to muddle the definition of hearts for them to make sense. Characters like Axel and Terra didn't have their hearts, but they themselves still inhabited their bodies. That's why Ansem goes on a tangent about "Hearts can't be explained by mere science"

Thoughts on his new outfit? I like it, it's fittingly Pixar and simple.

>all that black taking away the mickey mouse motif
>his shoes aren't hilariously huge anymore

Easy the worst design hes ever had

Level design and pacing is better in 1 as well.

The majority of the first visits to a lot of the worlds are filler, and the worlds themselves are extremely linear. I'd argue that the combat in 1 feels more "raw" and weighty too- the combat in 2 feels floaty at points.

A council of powerful (nobodies), who used to be normal people, start invading other worlds which prompts a teenager to master his inner (nobody) while on a journey to the (nobody's) world in order to save a female friend

Souls are something different in KH. The initial user said that in any other kind of fiction that Hearts would be LIKE souls, but the Soul is still a separate concept in KH.

All of this is in the Reports and Ultimania.
>Characters like Axel and Terra didn't have their hearts,
Axel probably had a Heart the second half of his stint in Org 13 and Terra's body still has his Heart, it's just that it has Xehanort's too and Xehanort is the dominant force of will in the Terra-Xehanort entity.

All of this has backing in cutscenes such as Blank Points, the Ultimania interviews, and the Reports.

Hearts and Souls are two separate things in KH but for simplicity sake people tend to describe Hearts as what a soul in other fiction to make people swallow it better.

>if you actually want the Disney shit to matter then KH1 is the only one where that's the case
It didn't matter in KH1 either.

They're only tangentially important because of locking keyholes. The events of the world have no bearing on the overall plot.
Not even Maleficent's little gang matters.
Hook and Jafar are the only ones that bother seeking out the Princesses, and Hook fails miserably.
Jafar grabs Jasmine but besides that, he only cares about ruling Agrabah.
Hades straight tells her to fuck off and let him do his own thing
Ursula and Oogie care only about their own worlds
Wonderland, Deep Jungle and Monstro are completely unrelated

And frankly, the Disney characters themselves are paltry approximations of the source material.
Coupled with the awkward scene direction, the cramped and game-y level designs, sedated animations and basic dialogue, none of the Disney in KH1 actually FEELS like Disney.

Frankly, I think KHII has the best representation of Disney so far. Every character and every world is much more true to the source material. It feels a lot more genuine.

Play all of them. The first was god.

If Terra's heart is in Xehanort then why is he himself in the armour?

he's grown up

That's because the story is genuinely awful. II was already pushing it with some of the REAL IDENTITY bullshit regarding Sora/Roxas and Ansem/Xehanort/Xemnas, but at least it ultimately had a coherent plot with a well-established beginning, middle and end. By the time you finished the game, you felt like you'd completed a long journey.

Birth By Sleep is when they started really dropping the ball, retconning shit for no reason in favor of an "origins" story that wasn't needed in the slightest. Remember how they mentioned that Roxas looked a lot like Sora and then he was revealed to have been his Nobody? Well fuck what you heard, Roxas is apparently supposed to resemble some other dude named Ventus because he "connected his heart with Sora" or some extremely vague bullshit like that, the fact that he's Sora's Nobody now has fuck-all to do with his appearance. There's also some guy named Vanitas who looks like an evil Sora because reasons -- the explanation for that is never provided in the actual game, you have to read the Japan-only side novels for Vanitas' backstory.

It's all just so fucking stupid. KHII's plot might have faltered but at least it still made you care about the general storyline and its characters, it cohesively explained everything important to you in the cutscenes themselves. I stopped caring altogether when the games following that one came out because they were just needlessly convoluted.

Did you know that KH in talks since 00?

It's not Terra himself in the armor, people have literally said that twice now. It's Terra's left over anger and will to defeat Xehanort that's in the armor.

You see what's going on with Terra somewhat in Blank Points. He and Xehanort are struggling constantly to have control over the Terra-Xehanort entity and Xehanort is winning.

I haven't played DDD yet, do they explain why he gets a new outfit?
Doesn't his KH2 outfit have magical powers and drive forms? Why change?

In terms of combat, no. In terms of everything else, you definitely have a case.

>By the time you finished the game, you felt like you'd completed a long journey.

>Riku and Miki on the other side of the door
>everybody split up

Hell no, I knew there were more shit to come.

play 1 and 2 that is all you need

LW is just his rage at what happened controlling the armor, his heart is still in his body and he is fighting Xehanort for control of his body the last tiem we saw him

The Soul/Personality/Willpower/Whatever is separate from the Heart in Kingdom Hearts, that's literally the reason Nobodies can exist at all.

Meta answer is that Nomura was getting pressed by staff for a change in regards to the KH3 outfit. He gets another new outfit in 3D.

We don't have an ingame answer yet, but he does wear his KH2 outfit for part of 3 it looks like.

Industry insider here:

The only reason the game isn't out yet is because Utada can't get a good opening song ready. You will all be disappointed with the game and the ending in particular. No more Sora.

...

>No more Sora.
I mean come on now son, you could have at least looked at the multiple interviews where Nomura has flat out said that Sora will always be the main protagonist and worked out from there.

>It's Terra's left over anger and will to defeat Xehanort that's in the armor.

Now read this again to yourself and tell me, with a straight face, that this doesn't sound hilariously stupid.

>No more Sora.
Too bad Nomura already said that Sora will always be the hero.

He literally talks to Sora though. See this is one of those moments where the game relies way too much on bullshit metaphysics

?

Kingdom Hearts is fucking hilariously stupid.

That's what's so good about it.

I didn't say it wasn't stupid, but that's what it is.
That thing about the Unversed is wrong.
Do I have to post the cutscene or reports for you or something?

> See this is one of those moments where the game relies way too much on bullshit metaphysics
Or you're thinking about it way too hard? Just take it at face value, this is what the games show and what Nomura says interviews.

>Play
KH
KH 2
KH Birth by Sleep
KH DDD
KH 0.2
In that order.
>Don't play
All the others. Re.Coded and Re.Chain of memories are especially bad. If you really want to play more KH pick Days.

He literally says the last thing he was thinking before Xehanort took over

Haven't played 0.2 yet. How indepth was the character editor?

Could I, say, remake Sora's KH1 outfit with it? Because I really wanna

No.
All you really can do is add accessories to Aqua and change the color of her clothes.

>Everyone is Sora
>Everyone else is Xehanort

That's basically the entire story of the whole franchise in a nutshell.

The fuck? It's just a few cosmetic items like a crown or wings, and re-coloring Aqua's skirt and shit.

>recommending fucking Days over Re:CoM or Re:coded
The fuck is wrong with you
