XIV and ignore the rest
Start with 4 and work your way up in release order.
X
VI
1
every game is good in its own right beside 13, fuck 13
Chrono trigger
Its short and fun
FF1 PSP
FFIV Complete Collection PSP, do not play the inferior DS FFIV or any ports based on it
I'd say you can go 5,6,7, or 9.
Only ff not worth playing is 13, the sequels are supposedly good games but no experience on that first hand.
Also while 1 ~ 4 aren't bad, they are p fucking old so keep that in mind.
FFIV DS was my first though (also my first RPG). It's fine. And the voice acting is a cool aspect of it
FF 6 GBA with sound fix patch (Medieval-esque)
or
FF 7 (Steampunk-y SciFi)
Start with 9 then play 10, 13, 12
Okay, so the suggestions are extremely diverse so I made a Strawpoll.

Unless you're an oldfag, you're not going to like anything below X
>IIII
>VIIII
...
OP don't do it. I played up to 14 and looking back, it was a real waste of time. Play a real JRPG.
V
>play the homage game and ignore the actual thing
4, 5, or 1 if you are feeling a bit old school.
7 is great but over rated.
8 sucks, anything you hear about "best story" is a fucking lie
9 is great if not more "classic"
10 has great gameplay and a shit story/aesthetic.
12 is ok
13+ sucks
15 isn't finished
This Roman..
true, but it's popular enough that it's basically required
I say play with money cheat and emulation with fast forward
just look at it from the era you're most comfortable playing videogames from in general
then play the next game, or change generations
if you play a lot of nes games, go with ff1
if you play a lot of snes games, go with ff4
if you play a lot of ps1 games, go with ff7
if you play a lot of ps2 games, go with ff10
if you play a lot of ds games, go with ff3
if you play a lot of ps3 games, ...
if you play a lot of ps4 games, go with ff15
Start with IV and move up until IX.
5,7 or 10
VI is winning. Do NOT start with VI. I love final fantasy but the thing I dislike about FFVI despite its numerous advancements is that it flips the idea of a main character on its head. Most entries in the series have you follow the most important dude for the bulk of the game whereas FFVI has you switch perspectives a lot. It's neat unless you're going in expecting a strong lead like past or following games in the series.
There's no reason to skip VI, but don't fucking start with it. Start with I or IV (IIII)
10 has a great weird islander aesthetic and good music you shut your whore mouth
Starting?
Play ff6 or ff7, then play the other one
Then go and play ff4, ff5 and ff9
after you've played those
Lastly try out ff10 and ff15, you might like em, you'll probably hate them, but ff10 has some good moments once you finish the AHAHAHAH and Luca
Play 11 or 14 if you're okay with MMO's
Don't bother with 1, 2, 3, 8 or 13.
god dammit that annoys me so much.
2 O 4
Why?
All other criticisms aside for FFX, when I first saw the laughing scene many years ago I understood it was supposed to be forced due to the context of the moment. The voice acting was awkward for the entire game before that, so the quality of the scene never really stood out to me.
Do people still think it's just Tidus being a retard or did they not play the game?
I
If it's too weird, try the PSP/GBA version.
As a XIVfag, shut up.
FFXV is the best in the series.
>all these people recommending IV
Start with V, it is the real shit. It's gameplay actually holds up to today's standards, while IV is more barebones than the NES FF games.
The problem is while jobs are more or less prevalent in the series, the job change system is criminally absent most of the time. Most FFs have a core cast of dudes specialized in one thing or another and while you CAN customize them lager it's not always the case. FFIV is like FF1 is that whatever classes your have in your party, that's what they do. It's a more pure and basic FF experience that can introduce all the monsters, job roles, spells, and story tropes (looking at you Cid), and heavy story focus in a singular package. FFVI has a lot of these as well but deals with the issues of switching aforementioned perspectives and not having a true lead character like most games in the series have.
FFIV also starts Ultros and a lot of different insider jokes in the series , so moving on to FFV and FFVI after is preferred.
>FFIV also starts Ultros
What? (It's been an eternity since I've played it, but I'm pretty certain that's not true.) In After Years? Sure.
