Brogue

I've got a soft spot for adom.

Binding of Isaac

Not me, I like the appeal of a perma-death RPG or w/e with interesting skills but keyboard controls in *current year* are fucking retarded and for aspies/nostalgia fags

>tfw your nuts will never be so tight, your asshole never so puckered, while going through the sea of trees as a gnome

I don't expect many people on Sup Forums have the patience for classic roguelikes.

I like ADOM, but ASCII in terminal only though. Tiles just look bad to me.

Cataclysm DDA is also great if you consider it a roguelike.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. I wish it was Dungeons of Dreadmoor but the game has too many issues for me.

Probably NetHack, but that's mostly because it was my first, I think.

you're an aspie

Caves of Qud. Dying and restarting isn't boring because you get access to very unique playstyles right from the get-go. The game is also highly atmospheric which is really nice for a dungeon crawler. The tiles they used for that game are amazing.

After that my second favorite is probably Infra Arkana, largely for the exact same reasons.

I liked tome.. tomeNET... tales of middle earth.. online edition.

tomenet.eu/

Jesus my eyes... There are people who'd rather have this than ASCII.

Why is necromancy tied to a god in DCSS instead of being a class or magic tree. ;_;

I really like the development speed CoQ is going at. It almost makes me not want to wait before playing it, to get the most out of it

Thats actually not tomenet. That is RPGWO a non roguelike, I am just a retard and chose the wrong image. TomeNET is glorious ASCII.

elona+, barring that due to people screeching incessantly, brogue or poschengband

I'm in your roguelike thread but I only play casual roguelites

Dark Souls

That's because you are a lesser person than I.

>no permadeath(?)
>no proc generated levels
>not turn based
it doesn't come close to qualifying

is this the darksouls of roguelike shit posting?

Excuse me guys but I'd just like to interject for a moment here. What you may be referring to as a Roguelike, is in fact, probably a Roguelite, or as I’ve recently taken to calling them, a Roguelikelike.

Diablo 3 is my favorite roguelike.

>the milwaukee bucks are my favorite football team

I make it permanent. When I die, I roll a new characters and start over.

>food analogy
Take it easy, bud. Its got RNG elements, loot, and dungeons, so it's a roguelike. I'm also fond of Pokemon.

If you want to talk about rogueLITEs, I'm fond of Elona+.

Wizardry 4: The Return of Werdna.

I always thought risk of rain was a rogue like but that's not turn based.

I believe we are past the the wild days of ignorance. We should just accept their contributions and call them rogue+light.

that doesn't mean it qualifies, especially considering it's still missing other elements

it's a roguelite

A decent number of people use the Berlin interpretation as a guide for whether or not something is a roguelike.

roguebasin.com/index.php?title=Berlin_Interpretation

if its not turned based its not a roguelike.

Roguelite is a fucking meme buzzward used to describe things that aren't roguelikes but contain very distant far off semblances of them. they're the equivalent of having 2% native american dna. Just because you have permadeath doesn't make you a roguelike or even a shadow of one.

If you have any doubt at all then it's more than likely not a roguelike.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Sky.

Super has the best postgame though.

SOMEBODY POST THE FUCKING FLOWCHART IM HAVING A FIT

Tales of Maj'Eyal

Tons of classes, multiple skill trees and builds for each. Base game is free and the expansions are cheap. Love the amount of work that went into it. They didn't just say fuck it with ascii graphics.

Roguelite/roguelikelike became a thing because of a number of games which explicitly took design cues from roguelikes while applying them to other genres. The overlap isn't coincidental. They specifically set out to create a roguelike-like experience in say, a sidescrolling platformer or a twin-stick shooter.

Qualifies to me.

who would win: a pack of gender studies majors or a pack of faggots arguing over the terminology and semantics of roguelikes

you're fucking retarded then, which really shouldn't surprise me and yet it does

They are like rogue. They are roguelikes. Dont have an autism fit

High difficulty through permadeath and randomisation is the heart and soul of a roguelike.
>2%
More like 90% desu

Is that his date of birth ?

basketball is like football, so we should call basketball football

Don't come into a community that's older than you and run your mouth off about things you don't understand.

Basketball isnt like football

Simmer down.

>hurr, it has teams
>it has points
>it has a ball
basketball = football confirmed!!!

Well odds are if they are old enough to argue about old roguelioes they are probably older fashioned and own weaponry

CDDA, Elona and DF solo
Can't deal with corridor dungeon crawlers anymore

But they're both sports and share many similar elements.

they're both sports that feature getting a ball into a specific place played by two teams comprised primarily by black people. they have more in common than Rogue and say rogue legacy or BoI

Spelunky. Cant wait for spelunky 2

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Fire Emblem is my favourite Roguelike

Caves of Qud is my fav roguelike, that setting is awesome, finding relics that are thermal grenade and all types of futuristic shit is cool. The Chesthole tileset makes CoQ much better looking

You think this is a ball?

best roguelike

it's called a football, clearly it's a ball!

man I would love tome so much more if you could just start in the eastern lands. The intro / first 30? levels are so fucking repetitive and boring, they're mostly without any real danger too. I've played it so much I can kind of autopilot my way through everything up until the necromancer tower/the maze to the east.

That is blatantly a ball. hell it's CALLED a footBALL.

>Burger football
You are thinking about American Football, not football.

Basketball and football are both sports.
Rogue and binding of isaac are both roguelikes

Sorry man, but when enough people use a word incorrectly, the definition of that word changes... and there is no way that a real roguelike can keep up with "modern roguelikes" in popularity.

How is binding of isaac like rogue?

>Hurr it's not a tru roguelike so it's shit
>Hurr anything is a roguelike if you wish hard enough
Fucking autism on both sides here.

this one?

roguelite ... the moba... of roguelikes

Favourite roguelite is probably Barony, I love how well designed it is as well as all the little secrets.
Sticking strictly to roguelikes though, it's ToME for me

its fucking not. fucking dead ass wack fucking roguelite term is nigh all encompassing of stupid shit.

I might be a bit retarded user, but I've never gotten to the east. The fucking orc boss that guards it is always so much stronger than me that he either destroys me with melee characters or just pushes my shit in if I'm ranged.

>make a roguelike thread
>roguelite babbies come and shit it up

Every single time. No one cares if you enjoy Risk of Rain or Binding of Isaac or whatever other games you play, but stop coming here pretending that you're playing the genre of games as people who enjoy NetHack.

no one ever said 'not true roguelikes' were shit though. they just want to keep the distinction

...

are you severely underleveled? then again if you're getting to the orc you probably can't be. Idk dude just make a bulwark or wyrmkin and smash his fucking head in.

You qualify as a faggot to me, does that mean im right?

If I make a wikipedia article about you and write in that you're a nazi hippopottamus, does it mean that it's true?

I really like this gif

...

No, but if enough people talk about that user being a nazi hippopotamus over a long enough period, than the definition of "nazi hippopotamus" changes to include that user.

...

[Citation needed]

that makes the people stupid, it has nothing to do with what user actually is

...

>if enough people are wrong about something it magically becomes true

save it, it's all yours friend.

>we all vote that 2+2=5, so now it is

>this shit is more of a roguelike than any of these so called roguelites

I agree with you, but genres aren't that stiff my dude.

Every modern game with the tag roguelike or roguelite deserves to be filtered. Like early access, survival and crafting. It's a 100% sign that the game will fuckin suck.

that's not how genres work and that would defeat the whole purpose of having them in the first place.

But thats how languages work. Words and definitions evolve to have new meanings

To be quite honest this is pretty much how the world works.

IVAN was pretty fun.

>if enough people call football basketball, it is then basketball

Ivan legit was amazing. so many good systems at play that you don't see used anywhere else, its really sad. Can only imagine how good it would be if the dev actually "finished" it. that nigga could makin bank on patreon right now.

I like Azure Dreams alot. That's probably pretty casual to traditional rogue like guys though.

That's.. not necessarily what it means and you're applying the world evolution here as if it's biological evolution i.e a species mutating into something entirely different. Lots of movie, music and game genres have remained more-or-less the same, but have experienced evolution in the form of sub genres, which is exactly the same here with roguelite. Roguelites didn't redefine the entire roguelike genre, they just spawned their own sub genre.
