>"It’s a fair question that gets a fair response (“Yes.”) For years gamers have wanted their medium to be taken seriously; to be seen as legitimate adult pastimes and not just the playthings of the young or maladjusted; to be considered art. We can’t suddenly get squeamish the moment they start tackling mature themes. And yet."
>"And yet. While I don’t take issue with this content being in the game - in any game - there has to be a reason for it. There has to be a compelling narrative reasons for it to be there. For the player to experience it. Reasons that go beyond gratification or, worse, titillation. And for all I know there might well be - Cage certainly implies there are in his robust defence - but, sitting in this room with its expensive furniture and a dozen other journalists flown in from all corners of the globe at great expense to write previews intended to eventually sell copies of this game, I don’t know for sure. And that, I think, is what my f**king problem is.
>"“F**king bitch took off without a word. F**king whore walked out on me for a f**king accountant!” Todd flies up, throwing the table clean over, sending cutlery and plates flying in all directions, the full force of his fury now aimed directly at the young girl in front of him."
>detroit: become human is it about whites returning to detroit?
Carson Barnes
Yeah. There's way way WAY worse shit in movies and nobody says anything about it.
Connor Roberts
Its a slavery metaphor.
Connor Hughes
I'm fine with it because movies already show worse and I'm also not a fucking idiot who tries to censor things that hurt my feefees in fiction.
Bentley Bennett
It's not real. People are getting upset at pixels on a screen?

Tons of games do this. Weird marketing, sony

Grayson Hill
>People are getting upset at pixels on a screen? People are always getting upset at trivial things that don't matter.
Brody Price
Majority of people who complain about things like this don't even play video games, so devs should stop pandering to and audience that literally doesn't exist
Jason Morales
"For years gamers have wanted their medium to be taken seriously; to be seen as legitimate adult pastimes and not just the playthings of the young or maladjusted; to be considered art."
Which of you do I blame for this?

I'll laugh if cage will actually respond to this and remove these scenes

>video game features domestic violence or other graphic content >demand that the creator explain the exact reason it's justified and require that he spoil the whole game to explain it just because you can't accept this without there being a DAMN GOOD REASON for it >it's a huge deal, we need to ban this sick filth
Fucking WHY?
Camden Myers
Me, it's all me, I'm so sorry.

In fiction literally everything is allowed. If they want to gore her on screen for shock value let them do it, nobody gets harmed. They should start locking up people who can't tell the difference between fiction and reality into insane asylums though, these subhumans even have the nerve to project their mental illness onto sane people.
Charles Rivera
If you want video games to be treated as art then you have to let developers do shit like this without breathing down their necks at the first sign of something offensive.
Now, David Cage is a fucking hack, and he won't be able to pull it off, but he should be allowed to attempt it.
Benjamin Brooks
you know normies and newspapers would flip their shit about a serbian film right thats not really a popcorn movie
Asher Ortiz
But Detroit is a movie
Daniel Rivera
>you know normies and newspapers would flip their shit about a serbian film right Nope, they won't because they will just say "well, there is a +18 rating on it so everything is ok. also, muh art direction"
Colton Foster
There are plenty of movies that depict domestic violence against women and children. They get rated R and sometimes people tell other people not to go see them. No one tries to demand the director publicly explain himself or change his movie, they just say, "Don't see the movie if you don't want to see scenes of domestic violence."
The reaction should be the fucking same. Rate the game M and inform people of the content and fucking move on.
Carter Sanchez
>They should start teaching people the difference between fiction and reality
FTFY Locking people up doesn't solve an issue. Teaching people why a thing is bad should be the goal, and ultimately, I think that's what the scope of Detroit: Become Human was (at some point) suppose to be; a game about the horrors of abuse.
Luke Lee
I am not okay with David Cage making more "games".

Zachary Cook
I don't care what the game wants or doesn't want to show, good for them. I am kinda peeved by that first paragraph though. There are people who want these themes and artistic quality, but not everyone. There isn't a single video games community rather than a multitude of them, each with different things that make a game good or bad, and I wish that was acknowledged, instead of pushing a narrative like 'gamers want the medium to be art, why would there be cries against this'.
Ayden Bell
>People make fun of vidya because it doesn't tackle important or risky themes like literature and TV does >Developers start tackling these themes >GAMING IS RACIST ABUSIVE EVIL CORRUPTING OUR YOUTH
Jacob Thomas
yes because its a fucking video game. these worthless liberal cunts are silent when its killing, murder, infecting people in games but wooooOOOOOOOOooowwww boo fucking hoo they show something in a game that expresses how fucked up a situation is in the story they cut themselves and cry to the suicide hotline and demand the shit be removed. its the same fucking situation with the Paz torture in Metal Gear. Pieces of shit whining she was being tortured for being a fucking spy but said NOTHING about Chico having fucking bolts in his goddamn ankles or the whole goddamn game of assassination
Christopher Jackson
I would like video games to be seen as legitimate as movies and TV, if for no other reason than for media outlets to shut the fuck up about stuff like this. If a movie or TV show has graphic content it's just part of the art. If a video game does the same thing it's a horrible outrage. It's an obnoxious double-standard.
But most of the "we need games to be seen as art" crowd think that means games need to be censored in certain ways. I think it means game developers need to not be afraid to just say, "This content is part of our artistic vision, so shove it and don't try to censor us" just like movie directors do.

Nathan Cook
Does he molest her? Because a kid being beaten isn't anything new in a game.
Before people start getting all riled up, the article is by no means against the game for doing this if you people took the time to read it.
It’s more so just looking at something that hasn’t really been done before in games and asking “is it doing it well?”.
Xavier Russell
>"“F**king bitch took off without a word. F**king whore walked out on me for a f**king accountant!” Todd flies up, throwing the table clean over, sending cutlery and plates flying in all directions, the full force of his fury now aimed directly at the young girl in front of him."
TODD NO
Adam Williams
This article is fair. It concludes that it isn't really possible to judge it without the context of the rest of the game, but points out that it has to be handled well and isn't an acceptable thing to include simply for shock factor. I'm not sure whether that 100% matches my own viewpoint but it's a reasonable one.
They're allowed to include things like this in their game, and others are allowed to criticise them for it. Nobody is talking about banning this game, as far as I can see, they just don't necessarily like it. I see no problem here.
Not sure whether I'll play this game. I don't take offence easily so the scene described is not likely to affect my decision.
Carter Cruz
Who the actual fuck cares about stories in video games? What the journalist should be asking is "does it play well?" and shove the story up his ass.
Anthony White
Strongly disagree. The merger of narrative and interactivity is the main reason why I play games now.
Caleb Watson
It’s a heavily story based game dude. The success of the game is going to be based on how good the story is.
Luis Gomez
It's doomed. Cage should just make movies like he wants. Same with Kojima.
Thomas Johnson
I don’t know if they even said that they didn’t like it. Seemed like a neutral opinion to me.

Yes.
Aiden Parker
So what you're saying is, it's shit by default. Combine that with Cage, and you're in double shit territory.

John Morris
I'm sure if you think hard and dark enough, you can come up with something that you don't think should ever be in a video game. Something you wouldn't want to see. I certainly can, but I won't describe it here. We'll call this your line. Your line might be a bit wobbly, and it might either be the same for all media or be different for films vs books vs games, for example.
Whenever a question like this comes up, it's a case of wondering whether the content crosses (or comes close to) their personal line. Everyone has a different one. This Becoming Human scene doesn't cross my line but I can see why it might get very close to some people's (especially if they're parents).
Zachary Rogers
Now wait for the internet tough guys to roll by.

First world problems
Christian Morris
There's zero controversy here. Especially not when you had mgsv depicting child soldiers, or call of duty show a child being blown up. Tell me when they depict a rape in a game on the level of Irreversible. Until then the medium is still in its infancy and just going "us too!"
Julian Butler
>For years gamers have wanted their medium to be taken seriously; to be seen as legitimate adult pastimes and not just the playthings of the young or maladjusted; to be considered art.
Nope. This only happened after enemployed english majors started feeling self-conscious about their hobby and started abusing critical theory to justify themselves.
Austin Flores
The problem here is implying that every piece of art or entertainment has to be aimed at you, catered towards you or even please you. People are allowed to make stuff you have no interest in.

No, the industry needs to go through these growing pains. Once we get all this out of the way then hopefully these "journalists" and people who hate the medium will go back to doing whatever it is they were before, then maybe the medium will finally start to settle down. Games will stop being so cinematic and tryhard all the time, won't take 10 years in development anymore or cost a billion dollars and be up to the brim with first day DLC and microtransaction, and will go back to being about innovation and fun again. I'm sick of every publisher being so greedy these days.

These threads are so boring.
Thomas Hill
Nigger, it's easier than ever for people to finance, develop, and distrubate a game than ever before, and after 50 or so years since games started, there's more variety than ever before. There are no "growing pains" left.
Christopher Sullivan
I'm okay with letting people put what they want in their games.
Christopher Roberts
Funnily enough buying knives won't do shit in these countries because they come at you in bands using assault rifles.
