Lunar Appreciation Thread

I just finished Lunar 1 and 2 on the Sega CD and was suprised how well they hold up. I want to wait for a while before playing the remakes, but are there any games from that time that use similar cutscenes or art styles? For those who don't know, this is Lucia, the best girl in the series. Say something nice about her if you please.

>Sega CD
You do realize even the devs disowned those versions right?
PS1 are the canon ones.

I didn't know, I just like playing originals before remakes. Source on why they disowned them?

See
SSSC and EBC are much better than the Sega CD versions.

But no, there's really nothing else like them.

Also; Mia > Luna > Lucia

>Source on why they disowned them?
Because they're considered inferior/unfinished. PS1 remakes have more content and plot changes, think of them are Director's Cut versions.

>are Director's Cut
as Director's Cut*
Cancer autocorrect

Well even so, they weren't long so it was a big loss. I really liked sprite cutscenes in the SCD versions, but the battle loading times in EB were pretty bad, compared to TSS where the battles loaded nearly instantly. I may just start SSSC soon. Is the PSP remake playing too?

Jean > all of those

and man how come lunar 2 never got that many re-releases compared to 1

>waifufaggotry
Pure cringe

PSP version isn't a remake, it's an enhanced port of the PS1 version of Lunar 1 with RPG Maker-tier tilesets, avoid it. Not to mention there is no PSP version of Lunar 2 anyway.

Call me back once someone unfucks the translation in the PS1 versions. The SegaCD ones have unfuck patches for them, but the PS1 versions are still stuck with the Working Designs massive horsefuckery.

>that one doujin series where Luna is forced to shit constantly
>it's like 5 fucking volumes

...

What about the GBA version of Lunar 1 and the DS prequel? I hear to avoid both.

I liked it. The liberties they took wouldn't fly with me today, but I prefer it to, say, FFIV's SNES translation.

She's cute.

>Massive horsefuckery
>Implying it's not better than most of the shit that was put out then.

Mountains and molehills

what

GBA version is basically a drastically butchered PS1 version cut down in so many ways it's not even funny. It makes GBA's butchered port of Tales of Phantasia look tame.

The DS game is supposedly really bad, personally I never played it precisely due to all the stigma surrounding it.

>Actually defending something that is basically the same cancerous style of """localization""" as modern NoA Treehouse
It's literally worse than FE Fates tier of butchered since not only did they rape the translation, character personalities and dialogues in the localization, but they also fucked with gameplay mechanics, introducing literal artificial difficulty in the US version to make people buy guides and to fuck over game rentals.

>implying

I am aware that the SCD version of EB had all the enemy's HP and stats increased by a lot, but I only had to grind once during the whole time (leveling up Jean before facing Lunn in the karate tournament). I do hear Gaijinworks, which is basically WD is still doing memetasitic translations, so I am not too interested in the games they put out now.

Nigga wut. I played these games in 6th grade; pre-internet. No guides. No nothing.

This "literal artificial difficulty" is such that a pre-teen could figure shit out.

once again, Mountains and molehills. It seriously sounds like you had such a shit time with the game that you have to overblow every flaw.

Also, why compare games that are literally 19 years apart from each other like they would follow the same standards?

Now, be honest? Which boss made you stop playing; and focus on nitpicking instead?

youtube.com/watch?v=FZ8nyFGuqBo

You're just bad. Didn't need a guide. It's an oldstyle jrpg that wanted you to grind extra levels out. And punished you for not having multiple saves since you'd get MP starved near the end of the game and didn't stock up on items.

Yes and PS1 versions are equally fucked.
Thing is, SegaCD has fan patches to unfuck them both gameplay and translation wise.
The PS1 versions aren't that lucky since nobody skilled enough wants to tackle them, also citing the fact that "well you have SegaCD versions already which is good enough for me not to bother with PS1, lmao" so it's fucked despite PS1 versions generally being straight up better.
It pisses me off that some old games from that time period will forever be stuck with garbage translations, stuff like Grandia Trilogy, Lunar 1/2, Legend of the Dragoon, the two SaGa Frontier games and whatnot.
All of them are permanently fucked by awful translation.

>Defending Working Designs DELIBERATELY fucking with the original dev's intended gameplay mechanics and balance
Please get cancer and die, you won't be missed. You're NoA Treehouse/NISA/Gaijinworks enablers with your faggotry.

It was pretty awesome how this chick back for the PSP dub.

I feel like I had a Playstation demo disc that had this song on it which led me to get the game. Good stuff :3
I still need to play Eternal Blue. Someday.

Good thread. I only ever played the second game because I was a shitty 10 year old boy.
I will play the games from start to finish another time. The only guy I remember was that one gambler dude and Lunar herself. Rolling dices was op as heck.
Do not bother too much about discussing these games because the majority of reddit, a.k.a Sup Forums, hate turn-based RPGs.

Just ignore the shitty pop culture jokes. The rest of the script is miles better than what we get nowadays.

>SegaCD has fan patches to unfuck them
Are you talking about these? These don't seem to modify the script, just revert the difficulty and make the text more readable. Can't find any other fan patches.
romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=23436.0

Cry more, kiddo.

I don't know if this is the case for Lunar but in almost any JRPG I've played that was released in the 80's/early 90's on MSX/Master System/Megadrive/etc. and later remade on PS1 or PS2 the avatars and cutscenes in the new versions are always the most hideous early digital artwork you can imagine.

It was nice how back in the day, some demos would give you a good slice of gameplay one of the highlight songs to rope you in. Pic related had me hooked from the demo with the cliffhanger ending.

>since not only did they rape the translation, character personalities and dialogues in the localization
No they didn't. I literally just finished playing the games in Japanese a couple of months ago and the characterization is almost exactly the same.
It's the weird NPC jokes that WD added that are bad.

>All of them are permanently fucked by awful translation.
日本語が分かるか
そういうなら日本語でプレーOKでしょう?

>The rest of the script is miles better than what we get nowadays.
Yes I am, also you clearly can't read
>Though not technically a restoration, all text has been converted to proper mixed case instead of all caps, and has been proofread to remove the most egregious errors.

>aw sheit a rare lunar thread
>shit flinging about sega cd vs ps1/saturn

>proofread to remove the most egregious errors.
That doesn't say anything about retranslating the lines that were memed. It sounds like they just fixed grammar errors.

My best friend introduced me to those games, his favorite one from that era would be Vay.

youtube.com/watch?v=NF7D_gRYZtI

Why her legs are so fucking long?

The script isn't "fine" and is drastically different fro JP you lying sacks of shit.
lunar-net.com/sssc/sss_diff.php
Here you go, fucking educate yourselves.
It's a gargantuan wall of text with all the differences.

>expect civilized discussion on Sup Forums
That's your first mistake.

>The rest of the script is miles better than what we get nowadays.
>Yes I am
Literally what the fuck are you even saying?

It's just one guy having a sperg out.

I played through it, all the obvious memeshit was retranslated. Besides if you read that romhacking thread, you'll even see talk about doing the same for PS1 but lacking programmers to handle it since PS1 version is drastically different codewise.

Maybe she's a Clamp girl?

Long legs are nice.

Oh ok. I'll try it out if I feel like replaying it.

Probably a stroke from his sperging

Quoted the wrong guy by accident, meant to quote and his
>Are you talking about these?
I'm on mobile and it's a pain in the ass to copypaste and highlight shit

I've already read through that and played the games in both languages. Aside from minor NPCs, CHARACTERIZATION was changed very little. I didn't say anything about the lore, plot, or gameplay.

WD also did some balance changes (most notably in the sequel) that were terrible.

It's not fucking right that the first enemy you fight in the game has a pretty good chance of giving you an unavoidable game over.

Not quite as bad as Silhouette Mirage where they felt the upgraded weapons were too powerful so they made them use up a shit ton of energy, making them useless.

Well fair enough then, I can concede characterization not being too different (other than NPCs) but the plot and lore are thoroughly fucked as you yourself just admitted. Sorry but Working Designs were straight up cancer and the Treehouse of the 90s.

I do find it odd that Sup Forums in general has no problem shitty on Devs over the smallest things. But here you are defending GA tooth and nail like they have some deeprooted history in putting out simply the best content possible; to the point where any changes are heretical.

btw, it's always suspicious when someone is as vague in their criticisms as you are. You should probably work out an actual argument instead of throwing out blanket terms. It makes it seem like you're nitpicking instead of pointing out actual flaws in the game.

It's akin to being like "Wow this games dialogue is shit." And then being pressed on the issue and instead of using an actual scene from the game; you go "Wow faggot, if you can't tell how bad it is then you're just contributing the the horsefuckery running rampant in the game industry. Get cancer and die."

indeed but that's too much man

>too much
Maybe for you

90% of those changes are so fucking minor that only a fanbase as autistic as Lunar's would even bother taking note of them. Every single translated Japanese game has just as many little changes like that, if not more.

Yes there are some big changes, and they're not ideal, but you're really sperging over something that isn't as dramatic as you're making it sound.

Ruby!

Ruby...

RUBY, DAMN IT!

So are there any similar games to Lunar? Should I play Grandia expecting something similar?

>defending GA
The fuck is GA you goddamn retard? I'm not defending anything, I'm shitting all over the garbage translation made by WD. Do you have brain damage or something?
Also I did give an exhaustive fucking list of all the translation changes here , doesn't get more precise than that. If you think that's vague then go kill yourself.

Game Arts you fucking mongoloid.

Lunar was made by Studio Alex, not Game Arts.

>has a nice anime aesthetic without going full weeb
>character designs are simple but memorable
>story is straightforward but entertaining, doesn't have a bunch of convoluted bullshit in it just because
>characters all have some small role to play in the story and aren't just along for the ride (mostly in 2)
>characters have actual chemistry and interactions with each other instead of everyone only having a relationship with the protagonist

I fucking miss JRPGs like Lunar.

Grandia is straight up better as a game overall, mostly due to its much more engaging combat system.
I recommend you avoid the first one unless you know Japanese, not only is the PS1 port horrible but the translation is also fucked and it features some of the most cringeworthy dub in history that doesn't take anything seriously, while Japanese dialogue plays everything completely straight and has Norio fucking Wakamoto voicing the villain.
Grandia 2 has a proper undub that also retranslates the script to entirely unfuck it, you can grab it here:
isans.blogspot.com/2016/04/grandia-ii-undub-10-released.html

But I shat on them too with their Grandia Trilogy translations. Grandia 3 is the least fucked of the three but too little too late.

If you want another 'cheerful' JRPG with an amazing sense of adventure, check out Grandia 1. It's one of my favourite games and has a god tier battle system.

Also, for a more obscure one that's something different, you can check out Rhapsody: A musical adventure . It's pure shoujo and very easy but I liked it. The PS1 version has a weird turn-based-strategy type battle system, the DS version has a more regular RPG system and some other minor improvements (however it also has some crash bugs).

youtube.com/watch?v=hIae7siP1Ds

>NIS will never make or localise another Marle Kingdom game

dammit.

>without going full weeb
I feel that seems like this were full weeb at the time.
youtu.be/_U-z-Aa2FMc?t=24m42s

Certainly went out with a bloody bang.
Dunno why this seems to happen so much with JRPGs like Lunar and Golden Sun.

>The fuck is GA
For someone that's as butthurt as you...that statement is fanfuckingtastic.

Anyway, from the link you posted.
>Major Changes
>English
>"Villagers have drawl 'redneck' accent."
>Japanese
>"Villagers speak normally."[No accent]
M A J O R C H A N G E S

Man, Working Design are such assholes. How dare they...ascribe an accent on some npc's that affects literally nothing in the game....but somehow constitutes a M A J O R C H A N G E.

>This one fucking wannabe weeb sperg
Fuck off.

That's an interesting empty picture

I played the first dungeon of psx Lunar some months ago and I thought it was really hard for the first dungeon of a jrpg from the psx era. Now you're saying that Working Designs changed the difficulty? Not only that but they changed the script with their retarded jokes? Working Designs was infamous for doing similar things with other games they localized but it still makes me mad.

Why the fuck did you cherrypick the smallest thing when the list of major changes is literally like 10 pages long you subhuman shitstain?

R U N N I N G
C O S T S
H P

People like you that enable butchered translations should be gassed, I bet you're Americans since your nation loves to eat up literal shit and ask for more, never caring about quality, only quantity.

>not playing the PSP version or PS1

That's such a bad idea. But who'd would put that in. In a JRPG of all things?

>I just finished Lunar 1 and 2 on the Sega CD and was suprised how well they hold up
My fucking dude. Very few people will ever get to experience the stuggle of having to grind to save the game in SCD Eternal Blue. I fucking loved that game for shit like that though.

Fuck off.

Didn't you also have zero control over who you attack? It would pick someone at random?

I felt that the whole saving system was a problem only in the beginning of the game. Enemies started dropping enough MEXP soon enough that one battle would give you enough to save.

Oh and wasn't it the case that you could choose item/money drops OR xp but not both?

Oh what's the matter, hit too close to home huh?

>when the list of major changes is literally like 10 pages long
You might actually be retarded.

No idea mate but I'd like to meet them.
Yes

Because it was funny, and did an excellent job of pointing out how autistic you're being about this whole thing. But you're right. 1 example of a major change is pretty cherry-pickish. So lets go for another one then.

>M A J O R C H A N G E S
>English
>Myght is described as not being a people-person, and being unhygienic/smelly.
>Japanese
>Myght is described only as being a hermit.
>M A J O R C H A N G E S

Man, Working Design are such assholes. How dare they...add a bit more description about a character, even though it affects literally nothing in the game....but somehow constitutes a M A J O R C H A N G E

You seeing a pattern here?

You're the type who isn't satisfied with anything.

Kill yourself. Painfully. You can have the last word for all I care. I'm done replying to to your dumbass.

Gas all weebs now

Was Lunar Magic School ever translated?

youtube.com/watch?v=0j6Xpzgvq68

Heard rumours that it wasn't amazing, had random battles and a high encounter rate.

The entire point of that post, and using the example that I did; was to specifically point out how it's anything but "butchered".

If you think adding an accent to NPCs counts as "butchering" a game; then you're simply a retard. There's no other way to put it.

Changing someone from being a wise old hermit to an obnoxious greasy homeless dumb person is a major change, I wish I could murder you.

Only the Game Gear version. I don't think anyone is gonna touch the Sega Saturn version for a long time.

Just the original game gear version.
theisozone.com/downloads/other-consoles/game-gear/lunar-walking-school-english-translation/

>when you're so cucked by Common Core, poison in water and media in government's pocket that you can't see straight anymore and accept butchered """localizations""" and asking for more instead of being pissed
Oh Ameritrash, so hilariously sad.

I want to suck on Jean's toes

Lets break this down.
>Myght is described only as being a hermit.
You read "Old wise hermit" Even though Old and Wise are YOU.
>Myght is described as not being a people-person, and being unhygienic/smelly.
You read "Obnoxious greasy homeless dumb person" That's pretty telling.

Hermits aren't exactly known for being the most diligent about hygienic. Neither the Jap or Eng versions defy that notion. You're made over nothing.

I'm at the point where it's not even worth arguing with you. You take the smallest shit, blow it out of proportion; and skip right past it to cry about another minor alteration that affects nothing. OR as you've pointed out here...you'll ascribe your own interpretations onto shit in an attempt to add more validity you your complaints. It's not working.

Ever considered that I'm simply here to make fun out of you Ameritrash idiots that keep eating literal shit and asking for more?

So
A.) I graduated before Common Core was a thing. But I understand how someone as /underage/ as you would assume that everyone had to go through it.
B.) TFHdepot
C.) Media in government pocket holds no weight in determining the level of utter destruction the addition of an accent to NPCs has on a game.

The fact you're taking these conspiracy theory bullshit into the discussion is telling. You belong on /x/ once you're old enough to post.

Oh you graduated indeed, with a masters degree in shiteating, lmao.
