I want to play the trilogy for silent hill 1-3 but christ it seems so convoluted to buy. If I buy them individually then the price is almost double, but I heard that the silent hill collection ruins them.
Am I better off just buying the collection or not?

Silent Hill hd ps3 is playable, but the raging autistic franchise won't hear the end of it. are the games objectively unplayable? No.
But watch they argue through their assholes about why it that one boat scene or that one other font type means its LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE. If you never played Silent Hill before, do not have access to any type of good PC or care to follow directions, the console HD version is playable.
Silent Hill 1 is not included in the HD Collection, Silent Hill 1 was never remade. Silent Hill 1 can be purchased on PS Store for $6, it then can be played on your PSP, PS Vita, or PS3. Alternatively, every Playstation 3 console can play PS1 discs if you just want to buy the physical copy of Silent Hill 1 (only PS3 consoles with 4 USBs in the front can play PS2 discs).
Silent Hill 2 HD and Silent Hill 3 HD cannot be purchased separately, nor do I even think Konami sells them digitally (I could be wrong here). Silent Hill 2 HD is mostly the same game as the PS2/PC/Xbox, you can choose between the new audio or old audio voice overs. It's not an extraordinary port because the framerate can take a dive in some locations and the original artwork wasn't reworked properly. Think of the criticism levied at Silent Hill 2 like an old GameBoy game getting a GameBoy Color version without the developer interested in what the original sprites should look like with colors; Silent Hill 2 HD takes some lazy route to present the image. It honestly is a 7/10, but a playable 7/10.
Silent Hill 3 HD forces a new audio voice over and new script, if you never played it before it probably won't even bother you hearing the new voices. Silent Hill 3 HD has a worse framerate than 2 HD, but is still playable since the framerate is only a key issue in a handful of situations off the top of my head. I can't think of many graphical or art related issues compared to Silent Hill 2 HD, it's mostly a framerate that can take a shit out of the blue.

bullshit, the games were objectively unplayable to me. they crashed, slowed down, controls stuttered, and in the case of sh3, one of the crashes actually played the audio from an endgame spoilerific cutscene during the intro.
It's worth at least one playthrough, they changed a lot of things in the game so if you do play it just be aware it's very different from 1-3

Story is, Konami wouldn't actually give the team behind the port - Hijinx Studios - full access to the original files so they had to remake a lot of assets and code effects like fog from scratch.
