the whole discussion about graphics being important is a dumb one
graphics have been good enough since the gamecube era
anything else is just extra and nice to have, but shouldn't be a metric by which you rate the quality of a game

Graphics matter. But graphics are polish, not essential.
If the gameplay is shite you'll just be polishing a turd. If the gameplay is amazing it'll be valuable even without polish.

You could strip games down to a couple of pixels and as long as the gameplay holds up it would be fine.

Graphics have been good since the sixth generation (PS2, X-Box, GameCube) and great since the seventh generation.

What's important is that devs know how to take advantage of the hardware they are using (e.g. a game released late into a console's lifespan usually has better graphics, but 99% of the stuff that came before it didn't utilize the console's hardware to its max potential).

What's even more important is to strive for graphics that won't look like shit 5 years from the moment of the game's release.

Visuals /= graphics retard. You don't need photorealistic assets to play a game.
